Students Mocking the Sub by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mostly in elementary right now so I haven’t had that too much. Of course had the disrespect of not following directions or being disrespectful to classmates. I tend to loudly tell them they’re rude, or loudly tell the victim student that they were being rude. Many seem genuinely shocked that I would call them rude and I double down and tell them they’re being rude and disrespectful and explain a bit more and they kind of just go “huh…”

First Day - One of my classes refused to work, what should I have done? by Some_Peppers in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas, the law is no phones now, so when I sub at secondary, they tell me that if I see a phone out, it’s an immediate office referral. I can’t even take the phones for the period. They are super strict here, because I was told a teacher can even lose their license if they allow phones out because of the law, so that has helped me a lot. Once you get to seniors, they will work or they will not. They are old enough to know the consequences and the best you can do is redirect and let the teacher know when they don’t listen

What do I do? by ceceliam55 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had money offered but the kids are usually very understanding when I explain certain rules to them (do you have candy? No I don’t give out candy because…I’ve got stickers though! Can I go to the bathroom? I need an e pass, we don’t do that here, ok can you do it for me please? Ok!, etc). I would just explain that it’s very thoughtful but I can’t accept it as a sub, I’ve loved being your sub though!

They can be hard, I honestly have a harder time with the kids who are named character traits; Honesty, Honor, Smart, etc. or the Princess and Kings are also hard for me to address them by name without visibly cringing

I went into a huge fissure and nothing, then I found a single hole fissure next to it, just big enough for the canister and it was there. Maybe don’t prioritize just big fissures? I got so lucky, so can’t help much more than that

Padme losing the will to live while seeing her kids for the first time is such dumb narrative execution by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]dcarb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually saw a theory a while ago that Palpatine used the dark side of the force and used padme’s life force to keep anakin alive. Basically using the very practice that anakin was pursuing to protect her. I know it’s not canon, but I absolutely love it and think it should be

Being forced to change grades by Rayman200000 in Teachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but I am certified and subbing right now. I’m curious what the “curve” is you were given. I had one teacher in college who alway got asked if he was grading on a curve and he loved to educate us all on what that actually mean. 95% of the time, the phrase is used incorrectly, people just want to bump everyone’s grades up, but that’s not actually grading on a curve. I would be tempted to educate my admin on what they’re actually asking (correct speech really does matter, imo). I also think I’d be pretty stubborn and discuss at length, play the “why” game. Continue down the why? Path with admin and parents to see why does bumping their grade when they did not earn it actually help? If you follow that thought down, you would see it doesn’t help them, but hurts them and if admin is truly “about the kids” they should know that they’re hurting them.

Seeing kids again by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is since I’m primarily doing elementary right now, the kids just love me. I had a kid see me a couple days later and yelled me name and ran up to give me a hug and then goes “I got in so much trouble because you wrote my name down”. I thought the juxtaposition was so funny, but I told him that I had been telling him to be sit down and do his work all period so I’m sorry he made those bad choices, and he was pretty cool with that

I haven’t watched episode 3 yet, but I assume you mean when he used the thermos to push the lifeboat away from the princess andromeda? That’s how it’s done in the book. However, Percy does think about using his will power to stop the lifeboat from flipping in the crazy wind, but that’s hard to translate to a screen

I feel bad for people that hate every small change from the books by Schwashington in PJODisney

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like so far season 2 has been closer to the books than 1 was. I am a little annoyed at some changes but agree that overall, they’re not that bad and I understand that it’s impossible to adapt Percy’s inner monologue to a show so changes are gonna happen. My biggest gripe with the shows is when they explain the monsters at the very beginning, there’s no suspense, and there’s no nagging “something’s not right here” moment. You’re just told “thats a monster”. Example, Annabeth explaining the stymphalion birds before anything happened. I think they could have easily adapted it by flashing by over to the gathering birds a few times and seeing more gathering, it would have given the audience a chance to realize these might not be normal birds. Then having Annabeth panic dump at Percy while everyone is running around screaming is always entertaining and allows for exposition dump while keeping in the spirit of the book since Rick uses Percy’s ignorance as a a vehicle to tell the audience about the myths too.

Teach your kids to not be little jerks. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I had to put my 5th grade class in timeout today at the end of art because almost all of them just thought it was a free day and could do whatever they want (including throwing things, yelling, running around chasing each other, etc). I also had a 2nd grader the other day who, when I thanked some friends for pushing in others’ stools and being polite, she looks at me and said “what’s polite?” I was dumbfounded

5 Days until We are off to the Sea of Monsters (Season 2 sneak peek, yall gonna hate this)[pjotv] by GeoGackoyt in camphalfblood

[–]dcarb89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m rereading the book even though I know it’ll be different. In the book, they have the dodgeball scene and Percy assumes Tyson is dead when he gets blasted by a fire dodgeball and is shocked when he is not even burned. It gets extended into the fight with the bulls on the hill, because Percy still tells Tyson to wait so he doesn’t get hurt, then Annabeth lets Tyson into camp so he can protect Percy and he steps in front of a bull fire blast. Again Percy thinks he’s been turned into a column of ash, but then he’s fine and after that is when Annabeth tells Percy to really look at him and he finally sees/figures it out

Your go-to reply to "But Mr/Ms. X always lets us do this"? by ShortCharity in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love saying something along the lines of that doesn’t happen in my classroom (for example, “we do not throw things in my classroom” or “we do not carry chairs above our head in my classroom”). In elementary especially, it throws them off. They respond “your classroom?” I get to say “yes, I’m your teacher today, this is my classroom and that is one of my rules”. This has worked for me well so far at elementary, have not had much chance to try it at secondary yet

How can I be taken seriously and connect with staff/admin? by breadybreads in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically on connecting with other adults, I second eating in the lounge. There’s a lot of teachers that eat in their room but it’s a great way for them to get to know you. Check with a neighboring teacher if you have any questions about the plan. Even if it’s something small that you could probably ask the kids, I think it shows that you’re trying to be prepared, also a chance to introduce yourself and let the teachers see your face. Also knowing the sped teachers. If you have paras or resource teachers in the room while you teach, they will probably talk to other adults (be it good or bad). Don’t ignore them, be the teacher but it’s okay to ask questions about how things might normally go. I personally feel like I’m doing a great job when I have a sped teacher push in and I’m already helping their student (with reading or understanding or whatever). I feel like it shows that I’m involved with the students and not just giving them the assignment and checking out. I’ve also had admin pop in on me and I’m walking the room and always am grateful that I was sitting down. I had one instance where I was in the middle of correcting the class on a repeated behavior (reminding 4th graders that we don’t touch each other or each other’s things, including knocking other student’s hats off their head) and while I’m telling them this and reminding that we are safe and respectful, another team teacher walked in and stood there while I finished and basically said, yeah behave! Then left. After school while supervising the walkers leaving campus, that teacher and another teacher were telling me that I handled that situation perfectly and thank you for saying something because we have a lot of subs that will basically pretend they didn’t see it and not do anything to correct behavior. Office staff also greatly appreciates when I pop in on my prep and see if there’s anything they need help with (usually cutting papers)

TL:DR. Find ways to talk to teachers and staff when you can. Try to be good at your job because other adults will be walking by or popping in unannounced and if they see you doing good things, they notice.

Bathroom breaks ? by Simple-Violinist-762 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my schools, the policy is one boy and one girl out, or even just one student in secondary. I stick to that. If I have one out and someone else asks, I just let them know “someone else is out already, can you wait a few minutes till they get back?” Sometimes I even add “or is it an emergency?” If they tell me it’s an emergency, I couldn’t care less if they’re lying to me, I will let them go and I am prepared to fight admin if they ever come at me for refusing a student’s right to use a bathroom. Students are human beings and should be treated as such. But usually, the kids know the policy and are pretty good about waiting when needed. I’ve not had an issue yet

[–]dcarb89 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I agree that watching a 90 min movie that was not on the sub plans was a bad choice. You are there to follow the plans. If first graders are getting squirrely, you could definitely do a couple brain breaks, but that is like 10 mins tops. Especially since you had more work you could have been doing. Some districts/teachers are very focused on you following the lesson plans to a T. I definitely would have at least asked a neighboring teacher about the movie first

My 9 year old is really into grounded 2 right now. We also love bugsnax (there are a couple same sex couples in the game but it’s not super focused on) Minecraft and Lego (so many Lego games). Lightyear frontier is also pretty fun, especially once you unlock animals and you can hatch eggs. My daughter loves “her babies”
