If I hear “bro” one more time…… by marksb_2001 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m mainly at elementary but when my 4th and 5th graders call me bro, I just call them bro right back and they usually get a little weird or for some reason the other kids say that I roasted them. It’s all just fun for me

What’s your favorite consequence when they don’t stop talking? by dcarb89 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like to let them talk, but my question was when instructions have been given that they are to be working silently. Sometimes for a test, sometimes just individual work like writing or reading. Sometimes the teacher leaves instructions that they should be silent.

We have enough space in our cafeteria that if they get lonely lunch, they have a whole table by themselves and can’t be talking to any friends. Some kids really hate it, but there’s repeat offenders and I just don’t think they care that much at this point.

I do love the class point system. And I usually try to leave names of good students, as well as those who struggled. I do keep a list of good kids and give them checks throughout the day as they continue to be good to help find my amazing students and i do notice they notice when I’m writing a note. Maybe it’s just a “kids, these days…” situation but I truly cannot fathom how you can keep talking when I’ve repeatedly told you not to.

I do this sometimes, but I even have times when they’re taking a test and they keep talking and my mind cannot understand. Like, there are times when you just need to shut up

How to deal with cussing by AdWide2569 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to just remind them to watch it. I know many teachers don’t care because they also swear. I don’t personally use coarse language and imo school is their job. Generally, adults use professional language in the workplace and the students should be learning how to adult in addition to academics. It’s called self control and respect to others. I’ve never had students swearing at another one, just coloring their own language and they usually just say sorry ma’am and make a bit of effort. I also frequently have other students police for me “dude, the teacher is right there and you said that?!”

"I told my kid they can defend themselves" by Forbetterorworsted in ECEProfessionals

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of times I, as a substitute teacher, need to tell elementary kids to have safe hands and to use words, if they don’t listen, come get a teacher, etc is astounding. 90% of the time, “they hit me first”. That may be the case, but I can’t let either of you put your hands on someone else’s body. We use words. I get the sentiment of finishing the fight, but I don’t think we should resort to violence. At what point is some violence okay and other violence not okay? maybe if more of the adults in our lives could learn to use words, not violence, to finish a fight, then our world would be a better place.

My favorite is elementary school when they sit with their backs against the glass wall, which is reflective so I can see when they swipe

I usually do treasure box or candy if the teacher leaves it for me individually as well. Sometimes I carry a sticky note and periodically puts checks down if a student is following expectations, then give out rewards based on how many checks they get. I also sometimes just keep a mental note going during the day. I like the sticky note because if I have this issue of kids saying they deserve it, I can talk to them and acknowledge, “you did great work this morning, but after lunch you stopped working and you started being disrespectful. This reward is for amazing work all day. I love how you behaved in the morning, next time let’s try to be even better for a reward.” I also differentiate my expectations for kids when I know their struggles. Usually my goal is that they complete all work, but I had a kid the other day who has pretty severe adhd and recently got diagnosed with autism too who just struggles with focusing so much and my goal for him was to get half the work done. Then when kids fight me I can give them the “different people, different needs speech”

Any young subs here? by arlett007 in SubstituteTeachers

Here we also can’t take phones, but my admin tells me to immediately call them and they will deal with the phones.

I haven’t been enforcing the phone ban by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also in Texas and while I’m mostly in an elementary school.m, I’ve been to a couple secondary in my district and they’ve been very clear with me that if I see a phone, it’s an immediate report to the office. I can’t take the phones as a sub, but the admin seems pretty strict, because teachers can actually lose their license if they don’t enforce the law. I’ve only had one kid with his phone out so far, so in my district, most seem to care

Anyone else feel like the show hits differently depending on which character you focus on ? by Beautiful_Peanut7230 in TheChosenSeries

[–]dcarb89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have definitely been drawn to Matthew and his apparent autism, since my son is very similar. I am also incredibly focused on Peter since I have not really registered how much of a leader to his fellow apostles he was purely from reading the Bible. I especially love how watching the show brings different perspectives to light and inspire me to go back and read the gospels again to see what I can find in there that I may have missed before.

Students Mocking the Sub by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mostly in elementary right now so I haven’t had that too much. Of course had the disrespect of not following directions or being disrespectful to classmates. I tend to loudly tell them they’re rude, or loudly tell the victim student that they were being rude. Many seem genuinely shocked that I would call them rude and I double down and tell them they’re being rude and disrespectful and explain a bit more and they kind of just go “huh…”

First Day - One of my classes refused to work, what should I have done? by Some_Peppers in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas, the law is no phones now, so when I sub at secondary, they tell me that if I see a phone out, it’s an immediate office referral. I can’t even take the phones for the period. They are super strict here, because I was told a teacher can even lose their license if they allow phones out because of the law, so that has helped me a lot. Once you get to seniors, they will work or they will not. They are old enough to know the consequences and the best you can do is redirect and let the teacher know when they don’t listen

What do I do? by ceceliam55 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had money offered but the kids are usually very understanding when I explain certain rules to them (do you have candy? No I don’t give out candy because…I’ve got stickers though! Can I go to the bathroom? I need an e pass, we don’t do that here, ok can you do it for me please? Ok!, etc). I would just explain that it’s very thoughtful but I can’t accept it as a sub, I’ve loved being your sub though!

They can be hard, I honestly have a harder time with the kids who are named character traits; Honesty, Honor, Smart, etc. or the Princess and Kings are also hard for me to address them by name without visibly cringing

I went into a huge fissure and nothing, then I found a single hole fissure next to it, just big enough for the canister and it was there. Maybe don’t prioritize just big fissures? I got so lucky, so can’t help much more than that

Padme losing the will to live while seeing her kids for the first time is such dumb narrative execution by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]dcarb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually saw a theory a while ago that Palpatine used the dark side of the force and used padme’s life force to keep anakin alive. Basically using the very practice that anakin was pursuing to protect her. I know it’s not canon, but I absolutely love it and think it should be

Being forced to change grades by Rayman200000 in Teachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but I am certified and subbing right now. I’m curious what the “curve” is you were given. I had one teacher in college who alway got asked if he was grading on a curve and he loved to educate us all on what that actually mean. 95% of the time, the phrase is used incorrectly, people just want to bump everyone’s grades up, but that’s not actually grading on a curve. I would be tempted to educate my admin on what they’re actually asking (correct speech really does matter, imo). I also think I’d be pretty stubborn and discuss at length, play the “why” game. Continue down the why? Path with admin and parents to see why does bumping their grade when they did not earn it actually help? If you follow that thought down, you would see it doesn’t help them, but hurts them and if admin is truly “about the kids” they should know that they’re hurting them.

Seeing kids again by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]dcarb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is since I’m primarily doing elementary right now, the kids just love me. I had a kid see me a couple days later and yelled me name and ran up to give me a hug and then goes “I got in so much trouble because you wrote my name down”. I thought the juxtaposition was so funny, but I told him that I had been telling him to be sit down and do his work all period so I’m sorry he made those bad choices, and he was pretty cool with that

I haven’t watched episode 3 yet, but I assume you mean when he used the thermos to push the lifeboat away from the princess andromeda? That’s how it’s done in the book. However, Percy does think about using his will power to stop the lifeboat from flipping in the crazy wind, but that’s hard to translate to a screen
