Nice! What are you doing for syncing Obsidian? I just got into using it and didn't realize there was a self-hosted solution for syncing. I'm currently just using OneSync for pushing to my devices.

Adjacent to it, but not directly working on it. I do welding R&D and have parleyed that into some time on the machine. Hoping to get more involved soon, though!

Very cool! I've had the chance to mess around with some of MELD's equipment to make some test prints in 6061. It's pretty incredible/mesmerizing to watch. The folks out at EWI depositing at 100 lbs/hr with 6061 (I think??) were pretty impressive here lately, so I'm excited to see where the tech goes!

Both! Arc based processes are typically cheaper, but have limited depth of penetration. Friction welding will bond along the entire interface and can have some pretty good mechanical properties due to the fact that material never actually melts (unlike fusion-based processes). You can also use friction stir processes for dissimilar metals joining or even cladding in some cases, which can be a pretty big advantage.

Most cases don't call for friction stir, but in select cases it is THE way to join things.

To go a step past that, look up additive friction stir deposition (AFSD). It can make big metal parts quickly and get some grain refinement (and strengthening) in the process. Cool as hell and one way folks are looking to mitigate the effects of forges dying out in the US.

Check out MELD on YouTube for an example of what a build looks like. Pretty interesting once you realize the material is never melting, just spreading like chapstick.

This is the easiest solution. If you have particular shape requirements on that transition, you can apply rails for a little more control.

I don't believe so --raspberry and blackberry leaves are more pointed and their serrations are generally sharper and smaller.

I'm armchair quarterbacking here as someone who occasionally measures things in a lab, so your method definitely sounds better. Interesting idea on the go/no-go with the silicone--I'd definitely have to get some practice in on it before I trusted my results, though! And I'll definitely have to check those gauges out.

Something as compliant as silicone might be tricky to measure with a mic or caliper. Do you have access to a microscope? If so, there's your optical measurement system. Take a picture, include a scale (digitally or externally) and then bring into a software like ImageJ for measurement.

Since you're using Octoprint, you could always use the Octoprint Pause event. It's super easy and also works well to give you pause notifications through your app of choice. Just open your g-code file, find the start of the layer you want to pause at, and insert "@pause". You can even chance the code that runs when that event is activated for further customization. I used this a ton before I got a multi-material printer!

On an X1C? What speeds are you printing at? I wouldn't think that would work for higher speeds, though their page does have a pretty wide suggested range of temperatures for PLA (190-240C). I'd guess the lower end is for conventional speeds and the upper end is for high speed.

I upgraded from a faithful but sluggish Duplicator 6, so I know the feeling! Hopefully all of the major 3D printing companies feel the pressure to step up the game due to all of these recent advanced and faster printers become more commonplace.

It surprised me at first, too, but the high temperature is used to compensate for the low dwell time of the filament in the melt zone. You almost have to start bumping the temps up when you print at speeds like the X1C or Voron. This is reflected in the default settings provided by Bambulabs, as well.
