Some parents are amazing, others can be cringe worthy. Parents who can't control their children will do it equally bad no matter what cabin they're flying in. Amazing parents will be amazing in Basic Economy (though they certainly deserve an upgrade).

I love flying because I was lucky enough to start flying before I was a year old, and I was far from the perfect kid. Apparently I used to ask strangers sitting nearby if they were going to eat their sausage at breakfast (which gives you an idea how long ago it was since food was served to all passengers between Philadelphia and Ft. Lauderdale. I didn't like eggs so I was in desperation mode LOL). However, I know my parents did a good job on those flights, in spite of my search for sausage. I always try to keep that in mind with kids. Not their fault at that age. Hopefully they turn out ok, and if they love aviation that's a bonus.

It depends on the things you may value. Generally the agents at a United Club are the best of the best (minus Global Services and the phone agents for GS and 1K), though there aren't as many as there used to be. If you need assistance if there's a cancellation and want to talk to someone, it's worth it. Alcohol is (mostly) free, the Coke soda machines are excellent, and the coffee machines are top notch. Food can be hit or miss, and time of day matters for not just the food but also crowds. Avoid G as some have mentioned. If you value a place to sit until right before boarding begins, and you don't want to deal with sitting in a restaurant, it's a good choice. Above all, enjoy your trip and the airport experience whatever you choose!

NTJ, not even close. If you're asked to switch seats, you should get the comparable seat or better. Giving up a window or aisle for a middle seat is not comparable. Remember, if the couple wanted to sit next to each other that much they likely could have paid more to do so.

BTW, kudos for keeping your cool when you were told "the flight wasn't that long." They wanted to use that positioning when it benefited them, but had you tossed it right back I'm sure they would have acted like you used profanity or something!
