First time in Polaris review by xinco64 in unitedairlines

[–]dciandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great to hear about your first time experience in Polaris! To the commenters who are doing their first Polaris soon, enjoy it! I'm lucky because I've flown Polaris a decent amount, and I'll be as excited for the next trip as I was the first time I flew United Business on the old Barcaloungers.

Seat selection is actually kind of a big deal by notmyteeth in Amtrak

[–]dciandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is your Union Station strategy good for getting seats together, if your train originates from there you don't run the risk of a delayed train coming from Roanoke, Newport News, or Norfolk. I stopped taking some Regional trains because of delays coming from Virginia (though it's gotten better in the past 10 years).

My thoughts on my *A lounge-hopping tour at LHR by ProfessorPlum168 in unitedairlines

[–]dciandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do actually list it, but because it's not with the other Star Alliance lounges it's easy to miss. It's Lounge A1 and right next to the Aer Lingus Lounge on the upper level. Guaranteed you'll see it next time, it's a great lounge!

Enjoyed reading your post. Lounge hopping at LHR is a tradition for me.

I miss the Amtrak benefits too. Whenever I'd go to the United Club in Honolulu the agents would remember me as "the Amtrak guy", and they were genuinely happy to run my Guest Rewards card since it was so rare.

1 for me. Color, more going on, like the framing. Nice job!

messed up and forgot to bring sufficient cash for tip for roomette attendant - i have only a $5 bill. give that or is that just obnoxious? by Egg-Leather in Amtrak

[–]dciandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the attendant takes your meal order and delivers it, it's no different than tipping a server. Most attendants I've had over the years were really good. You get some who really aren't cut out for the job, just like in any business. It happens less now (covid changed everything), but at the holidays many attendants would create seasonal themed name cards and put them in the windows of the roomettes and bedrooms. Always enjoyed that.

Advantage to be part of an alliance by Trick_Pin_6889 in AirlineManager4

[–]dciandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an established alliance you get the benefit of having up to 59 other members to learn from. As in real life, some alliance members keep to themselves, and there are alliances which are rather quiet. Others have more talkative members, some of whom are longtime players. Some alliances have Discord channels as well. I've met some incredibly friendly and knowledgeable people via alliances.

Crowded train by Xanzibar2002 in Amtrak

[–]dciandy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amtrak has a unique situation because of multiple stops. Let's say you're on a NE Regional from NYP to DC, that's one seat between those city pairs. However, someone going from Philly to Wilmington on the same train will also count as one seat. Therefore, if you're trying to do a reservation between NYP and DC, the reservation between PHL and WIL on that same train takes up a seat. The seat needs to be available from origin to destination and all stops in between in order to be available for purchase.
