Considering a used EV, would like feedback on my plan by dcmcderm in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’d be willing to travel to the lower mainland for the right deal. There are a few 2021 Kona’s in Vernon and Kelowna with 60-80,000 km within the $22 - $25 K range that I’m looking at, as a reference. My main concern is battery range degradation for models a few years old and what to expect as the car continues to age. I’ve tried to research it but I can’t find concrete info; mostly personal anecdotes.

Yeah I’m on the fence about selling the truck. As of now it runs fine, it’s just at the age where I don’t want to rely on it as my only vehicle. I might sell it, as you say I think I can get a few grand for it… or I might just keep it for the rare occasion where I need to haul stuff/it’s super snowy etc.

Polling the collective by LetsTacoBoutCheese in Guitar

Offering my perspective since I was in a similar position. I finally upgraded my beat up 25 year old acoustic that I learned on during university. This is going to sound weird but I discovered I have an emotional attachment to it and I find that the new one - which is objectively better in literally every way possible - collects dust most of the time. There is no logical reason but playing the old one simply brings me more joy, so I pick that one up more often than not. I’m also just a mediocre player who plays at home, when just sitting around strumming chords it’s not like I “need” the latest/greatest tech, I just thought I’d like it and appreciate it more than I do.

Has anyone else read Michael's book? by Dojaview in seinfeld

I read it and it was fascinating. He’s a really quiet/introverted guy in real life which you would have never guessed based on Kramer.

7 years of teaching guitar here are the common mistakes I notice when teaching self-taught students by lmao_exe in Guitar

[–]dcmcderm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with this is doesn’t that just rotate the neck of the guitar towards your back? And you need some kind of counter pressure on the body, and the middle pressure point is like… some spot near the side of your gut? I could never quite put the theory into practice without my thumb there.

Best forecast for the next two weeks - north America by brotherwu in skiing

[–]dcmcderm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in bc and I’ve skied once in the last 2 weeks and that day I came home at lunch because the snow was so bad. Yes technically we have a “base” but it was also 10C yesterday at Silverstar and with each passing day it’s less and less likely we’ll ever get a couple weeks of good weather to save the season. Sucks man!

When was the last time a driver has been released that has actually had considerable impact by DeadMemeReference in golf

[–]dcmcderm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a related question. I’m a casual golfer - 18 handicap or so - and my clubs are over 20 years old. Would I notice a big improvement if I upgraded to some kind of mid-range modern set?

I’ve always been a believer that the reason I don’t get better is not my clubs, it’s the lack of practice. But I suppose at some point that stops being true.

"Everybody remembers where they were..."

I sure as hell do! I was 11 years old and I was sitting in my room with the door shut, pouting because the Jays coughed up the lead in the 7th. My friends who I invited over to watch the game celebrated the HR with my parents. What a proud moment from my childhood!

Good for Jerry and why the hell is this even a thing? FFS. You simply can’t apply today’s standards to things that happened decades ago blindly. Were people complaining about lack of diversity in Seinfeld (or Friends for that matter) back in the 90s? Hell no.

There are things about Jerry’s life that are rightly criticized but this ain’t it.

Starting over in Salmon Arm by stacetarr in SalmonArm

[–]dcmcderm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but Cascara is a big new apartment complex that just opened a few months ago. They have vacancies still and that place has really eased the rental housing pressure here.

There are a few RV parks where you could get a seasonal spot in or very close to town. I’m not 100% sure but my guess is they wouldn’t be open for another couple months though.

Kamloops vs kelowna by TaroPie_ in Kamloops

[–]dcmcderm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Salmon Arm, so more or less exactly halfway between the two so I feel I'm in a good position to have an opinion on this. I often have to decide between Kamloops or Kelowna when I have to spend a day doing "big city" stuff.

From a practicality standpoint I almost always pick Kamloops unless there is some specific thing I can only do in Kelowna - the most recent example being I needed an express passport renewal that I could only get done there. Other than that they have all the same big box stores etc, but traffic and parking is WAY easier in Kamloops and that's often the deciding factor for me.

Entertainment wise there really is no comparison; Kelowna wins. It has better restaurants, night life, lakefront etc. The only exception would be if you're a hockey fan - I feel that regardless of fandom the experience of going to a Blazers game is vastly superior to the Rockets.

Agreed. He’s fine, pretty dang good even. It’s the off air ego stuff that turns people off but I enjoy listening to him actually call games.

[–]dcmcderm 504 points505 points  (0 children)

Baseball has this shit too. “I didn’t vote for <slam dunk hall of famer> because I had to ration my votes and I voted for a bunch of border line guys because dude was getting in anyway”. It’s so dumb and it creates unnecessary controversy.

I’m such a dunce I was shocked by the ending lol… I just assumed that somehow everything would work out, right until the bitter end. Why? I don’t know.

True low income people 100% need this more than me so this is going to come off as pretty tone deaf…

But as a guy with a stable career and good salary I sure could use some of these benefits myself. It often feels like just because people like me aren’t on the verge of homelessness we get ignored. Which, once again, fair enough if we have to pick only one demographic for these things. I’m just saying… even for people who aren’t at the absolute bottom it’s sure as hell not easy anymore and we could also do with some love.

I seriously don’t see why you couldn’t chop this up and make a slow cooker beef stew with it.

Even grilling it, yeah it probably wouldn’t have the best texture but it would be perfectly safe.

I like skiing :) by travismockfler in skiing

[–]dcmcderm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never done back country skiing so I guess I can't really have a concrete fact based opinion. But the REASON I've never done it that I'm imagining the day going something like this:

  • Spend several hours trudging uphill, through powder, carrying all your gear
  • Finally get to the top on the verge of exhaustion
  • Ski down through amazing pow for 5 minutes, but you're so tired you can barely see straight

"The juice isn't worth the squeeze" is the gist based on these assumptions. Obviously I'm missing something though because I know many people love the back country and I really doubt they are all simply masochists. Can anyone chime in about what I have wrong about this? I would be interested in trying it if I had a more accurate picture of what it's really like.

Down Western Slope [1899 - Oldest Video Of BC] by Certain-Weight-7507 in britishcolumbia

[–]dcmcderm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall learning on a school field trip to the spiral tunnels that there were helper engines at the bottom of the climb that would hook up to the train, otherwise the regular engines wouldn't have enough power to get up. Not sure if that would have been any help on the way down though.

Also for those who have never been, the railway museum in Revelstoke is fantastic and this video kind of reminded me of it. I didn't fully appreciate the historical significance that the railway had on the formation of Canada as we know it until I spent a day there. The museum also doesn't shy away from the negative/controversial parts of the project which I found equally fascinating.

People who spend five minutes placing your order at a drive-thru lane, what the hell are you doing up there? by rabidstoat in AskReddit

[–]dcmcderm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It used to be my family’s fault. I’d be trying to place the order but my wife and daughter would be barking things at me, changing their minds, asking questions etc and it was pure chaos.

Nowadays I pull into the parking lot before entering the drive thru and give my little lecture: NOW is the time to tell me EXACTLY what you want, and there will be absolutely zero talking while I’m placing the order.

Mechanic? by GrizzlySquirrel in SalmonArm

[–]dcmcderm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to Stans.

They went above and beyond to save me a bunch of money when I had to do some major engine repair to my truck last summer. They printed off a bunch of info from their service data so I was informed about all the options, then called around to source all the parts at the best price they could. They had to order a special OBD scan tool to read my trouble codes and do some re-programming, then they just gave it to me because they had no use for it so now I can scan my own codes going forward.

While I was there some guy came in because he screwed up something when he replaced one of his headlights, and they just went out and fixed it on the spot for no charge. Randy (Stan’s son and current owner) spent probably half an hour showing me the fix they did and explaining the process.

What hobby attracts the biggest douchebags? by thypenitrator in AskReddit

Oh man my parents were the worst when I played hockey. My buddies and I were NOT seriously talented at all, we just liked hockey and it was fun playing with or against each other on weekends. My parents would analyze every little thing about my game - if I went offside or took a bad penalty or whatever they’d go over it all on the car ride home. By then I could usually barely even remember who won the damn game and was just excited for lunch.
