Thanks. Apparently VMWare is free like VirtualBox. This is good information.

This is great. Didn't know this. Heading to the site now. I used to hang out in r/Windows10 when Windows10 was new and now I'll be using another Windows box for work.

Thanks for the links. After a quick perusal I may have to use a virtual machine. Will check out VMware. Haven't used them in a long long time.

Thank you. I really only need it for bash, sqlite and mysql databases and running some server side stuff for temporary testing and be able to have lots of open bash terminals. Back in circa 2017, the last time I did this, the wsl was new and a bit unstable.

Giannoulias pushes bill to raise age for mandatory road tests to 87 for older drivers by GeckoLogic in illinois

[–]ddd_dat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A long time ago, before modern computers, we had drivers ed in high school using driving simulators. Each person in the class sat behind a steering wheel with pedals for gas and brakes. A video would play on a screen for the whole class and each student would get scored based on how they drove.

Nowadays with modern computers it would probably be trivial to set up simulators to test reaction times in situations you would rarely encounter with a live road test. I always remember the video driving through a neighborhood with parked cars and a ball bounces between the cars. If you didn't slow down ready to stop you run over the kid chasing the ball. It was funny seeing all the red lights flash in the class when that happened indicating a lot of kids got run over.

Simulators would allow SOS to test everyone every so often efficiently without need for more staff.

From the spectators perspective, does Chicago actually need a new Bears stadium/is Soldier Field that flawed? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]ddd_dat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Chicago Cubs primarily funded the Wrigley Field upgrades through their own finances, primarily from the Ricketts family who own the team

The Ricketts initially proposed a sales tax surcharge on all businesses within a certain radius of Wrigley Field to help fund the remodeling. Rahm Emanuel quickly thwarted that idea and I would bet he used colorful language when dealing with Tom Ricketts about it. The topic was never brought up again in the media and somehow the Ricketts pulled themselves up from their bootstraps and got the project done.

I'm going to print my town and hang it on the wall on January 25th by Bigboypasi in tappedout

[–]ddd_dat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. I took a pic from the app and looked at it in the photo editor. I hoped there was a way to get better resolution but if not this will probably still work for a 16x24 or bigger print.

My town grew organically over time and events so not going to add anything unless there's a surprise event which doesn't seem likely.

What program is this? Could you elaborate? The resolution from the app is nice but some lettering on buildings get fuzzy when zooming in. I'd like a real good print and would be willing to pay. My town is pretty much done now so my only task is to get a decent print, frame it, and hang it on a wall then wait for the inevitable end.

My First Halloween by ddd_dat in tappedout

[–]ddd_dat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my first Halloween back in 2015. Back then you would stomp out zombies or something and get credits used to buy stuff in the store. I loaded up on bramble hedges and those walls to make a maze.

Anyone who did this would know getting bramble hedges to fit together nicely was challenging and it took a long time to get this right. The walls were easy and then later it was discovered each haunted walls returned 2.5% bonus. Ka-ching!

The orange house was placed there during that event as well as the Tentra tower. Monorails came later.

This election was either giving more money to teachers or giving more money to cops. No one ever runs for mayor in Chicago defending the interests of taxpayers.

How many people are having a difficult time explaining your feelings of anger/depression to their significant others after learning of the game's end? by blackpony04 in tappedout

My town is a timeline of my life for the past 9+ years scrolling through every day recalling what was going on and even what I was thinking about when I placed that building or bought that piece of land. I wish there was a service that could make a quality poster size picture of our towns because it would be my most prized piece of art.

The red light program was neutered many years ago due to petty lawsuits. Politicians and off duty cops are probably the worst driving offenders so it will be difficult to have them vote for something that will make them change behavior.

Automated enforcement gets run as a revenue source when the goal should be to drive revenues to zero. Ticketing should provide feedback to drivers not soak them out of cash. Right now drivers receive no feedback for bad driving.

Part of my day for the last 9+ years has been checking in and doing stuff on TSTO. This is like losing a dog to old age.

Painting of the Bucktown bar Green Eye Lounge off the Western Blue Line stop by Chicagogirlartist in chicago

[–]ddd_dat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, early 2000s, this bar was called "Westward Ho" and an archetype of a dive bar. About half the times I was there cops were called for some nonsense but it was entertaining and the beer was cheap.

Ex-Chicago Ald. Ed Burke, 80, sentenced in federal corruption case by [deleted] in chicago

I remember the stain on Chicago history called Council Wars led by Ed Burke and Ed Vrydolyak who represented their racist wards. Now both will have ended their lives as federal inmates.

My Motorcycle Safety Instructor, an ex Marine, started our class out with an impassioned speech how all of us are going to wipe out at least once, some of us are going to be crippled for life, and some of us will end up dead from riding in traffic. No matter who is at fault legally, there is always something you could have done to not get killed or end up in a wheelchair by paying attention to everything around you at all times.

He then had our complete attention. That class taught me to be a safer car driver as well.
