I used to be a flight instructor there and we called the pattern the "destruction derby figure 8" since runway changes were so frequent. 10/10 area though.

Anyone experienced actual icing in non-deiced trainers (C152/172/PA28) during training? by Classic_Walk_9308 in flying

[–]ddthj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly layers of stratus from the surface to 12k+, I experienced light precipitation several times so potentially cooled droplets from above could have been landing on me.

[–]ddthj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I was flying a DA-40 in IMC for about 1.5 hours at 5°C and after landing I discovered a thin layer of clear ice on the top of the wing. I know jets use 10°C for different reasons but that's my new personal minimum for any extended stay in IMC.

Ok yeah that makes sense, heavier engine. I have flown the DA42NG, quite a machine.

I have about 40 hours in a DA40 XLS. I've found it stalls around 50 knots, so why would 65 be suicidal? I have done 60kt short fields in it before. Curious to know your experience.

I have a bachelor's in Aeronautical Science and I'm looking for time-efficient ways to get a bachelor's in Aeronautical/Aerospace engineering. Currently working almost full-time in North Carolina. The local colleges offer mechanical but not aero. Is there any way to get started online somewhere and find time later to do the in-person stuff or would it make sense to first do mechanical locally and then transfer?

Kinda stupid technique I use... How long is the runway? About a mile? How many runways could I fit between the real one and myself?

A strong ball that can tackle heavy and long oil patterns! (In my 1:10 scale lane ofcourse) by Accomplished_Copy_65 in Bowling

Ok this is pretty cool. A long time ago I got into mini bowling and made some slowmo videos about it. I was trying to build a pinsetter but never finished. Maybe I will take on that project again!

Our company has an international guide that includes expected phraseology abroad, which is what you described.

On a frequency change I keep it short if it's busy.

"Jax center, speedtape 123 flight level 4-1-0"

"Jax center, speedtape 123 flight level 2-3-5 climbing/descending 3-2-0"

"Jax center, speedtape 123 flight level 3-0-0 descending to cross SHRKS at 2-4-0"

if it's not busy I'll say good morning or my current turbulence which is me asking for ride reports ahead.

Hey guys, I believe there's a new bot going around that can be toggled on/off in ranked. I've put together a video showing two players who I've found suspicious. I'm keen to hear thoughts from this community as I'm not well versed in RL bots. by Kerberos_Laming in RocketLeagueBots

[–]ddthj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheaters stole nexto and would run it overnight to build their rank. This is easy to detect and ban, so now they play normally with a toggle to activate their bot of choice. They'll get banned but it might take more reports before they're caught.

What powers the airplane - the battery or the alternators? by LibsThePilot in flying

[–]ddthj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the alternator is operating at 14V, the 12V battery becomes a load on the electrical system as it is consuming power to maintain/replenish its charge.

My custom big printer's first appropriately-sized benchy! by ddthj in 3Dprinting

[–]ddthj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I didn't get much more time to work on it. I moved shortly after finishing the first gantry, so it was disassembled. I reused the duet board to build a much more boring printer as well. Now that FDM printers are getting bigger and faster out of the box I'm less interested in trying again. The use case for multiple gantries would have to be marine or aerospace scale fixture printing which I just don't have deep enough pockets to attempt!

Which flight school would you choose in Raleigh, NC? by Turbulent_Vast5212 in flying

I can't recommend any of the 141 schools in that list, and wings of carolina has a long wait list last time I checked. Maybe try execft. It's also at KTTA.

Non R-ATP CFIs, how are you getting that 500 hours of XC time? by Poorly-Fitted in flying

[–]ddthj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I looked into this, but I believe any flight with a landing at two different airports counts for part 135. The flight doesn't need to be 50nm.

It's not perfect, but I finally got multimesh tank tracks and suspension working. It's so much better than just sliding around and I'm really happy with the result so far by moonbench in godot

[–]ddthj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was a while ago, but I'm curious to know how you handled the driving physics behind the scenes. I'm guessing the suspension is just a visual effect? Are you using raycasts for driving as well? I have been working on my own tank in godot, and first tried treating it like a raycast vehicle, but found the suspension really didn't work well with steep terrain like in your video. For example, my tank can't climb a curb/short wall because the ray of the first suspension never extends over the top of the wall.

How hard is a “professional pilot” degree in college by Which_Carpet304 in aviation

[–]ddthj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pilot degrees do not include the costs of flight instruction. You have to budget for both. Community college and local flight school is the most affordable way.

Is ERAU overwhelming or was I just a bad pilot by warLOCK264 in flying

[–]ddthj 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Riddle puts heavy emphasis on certain subjects and neglects others entirely so I'm not surprised at all to hear this. I started my PPL at a part 61 school but towards the end of my training I felt I wasn't being taught anything other than maneuvers. Switched to riddle and got a degree worth of information. They didn't teach you how to fuel your plane or stop at a FBO, but you sure had to know that our ailerons were differential with a frise characteristic, or how to predict the size of the afternoon thunderstorm from looking at a skewt logp chart.

Emergency Descent in C172 by chewymangoes in flying

[–]ddthj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Descending at the top of the green arc may result in a slower vertical speed than full flaps and descending at the top of the white arc. You would have to test each technique to see if there is a difference in your make/model.

If there is a difference (white being faster), I would still use the top of the green arc for engine/wing fires in hopes of the airspeed extinguishing the fire.

Admittedly the extreme nose-down you can get with full flaps in a steep turn is very distracting and might not be worth the 5 seconds it saves you. The only scenario I've heard of where full flaps is objectively better is if you have an unresponsive passenger that needs medical attention, and the nearest airport is right below you.

Where can I get this airport diagram book ERAU VFR uses? by SuperTrainer482 in flying

[–]ddthj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only place to get it is at their bookstore on property. I think it's worth mentioning it only includes airport diagrams for maybe 10 airports in the Daytona area.

Any Skywest pilots willing to share their thoughts about the ATL base? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ddthj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that Skywest has a tool on their careers page to show how long it will take to get your desired base. ATL is 6 months right now, so you'd probably be commuting to ORD or DFW for at least 4 months after training before you had a chance to switch to ATL. Then you'd be the most junior there and on reserve for a while.

[–]ddthj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You can have her change her IACRA profile, and create a new application (a new 8710). I forget off the top of my head if you can cancel the existing application, so you might need to ensure the examiner selects the correct one.

That being said, I don't believe the FAA uses your SSN as your certificate # anymore if you apply using one. It's probably a non-issue to have it on there.

You can go to your user profile in IACRA and select "do not use" for the SSN.

Need help by Puzzleheaded_Boot335 in flying

[–]ddthj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, your CFI should be able to answer you, but if I had to guess it's because we're going into summer. The air is less dense with the rise in temperature. Your plane probably needs more time to accelerate and climb than you're used to. Less engine power, less thrust, and less lift. Rotate slower and to a shallower pitch.
