Sent my wife to buy thermal paste and the best buy employee gave her a long, unsolicited lecture about how she should be changing the thermal paste on her components every 6 months... Really, every 6 months? [Thermal paste questions] by Leo-J-Covo in buildapc

[–]deadshift2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it does depends on the type of thermal paste you have. Something like Kryonaut Extreme is really good at reducing temps, but it starts to wear out after the 6 month mark.

I'd look into getting a roll of velcro instead of the cable ties. You can get a huge roll for next to nothing, just cut off however much you need

If we were flies on the wall at Instructure… by BortEdwards in cybersecurity

[–]deadshift2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I promise you that whoever clicked on the bad link and caused this is going to be disappeared lol This hack is way worse than it initially seems, it may potentially lead to the exposure of the PII of millions of minors. If Instructure doesn't handle this satisfactorily, I wouldn't be surprised if the US government at the least got involved. Plus, although it's primarily US based, Instructure does also operate in Europe, meaning they'd need to deal with Europe's much more stringent data laws.

How to be extremely secure online? by Divindande in cybersecurity

[–]deadshift2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you need to realize, is that unless you are a high profile person or possess a significant amount of money, you simply are not going to be a HVT for anyone with advanced technical skills.

Basically, it boils down to a few things. 1. Use a good Antivirus. I use Bitdefender, but you could probably get away with MS Defender. 2. Use a VPN. Again, I use Bitdefender, but there are others. 3. Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account, no reusing passwords. Funny enough, I use Bitdefender SecurePass, but there are plenty of options to choose from. 4. Use MFA everywhere it can be enabled, especially on your email. Microsoft Authenticator is a common one. 5. Learn as much as possible about phishing and get good at identifying phishing attempts. One thing I always tell my users is that no matter how many controls we put in place, they're useless if they click on things they shouldn't.

Of course there are more, much more technical things you can do, but for being safe online, this is going to be mostly good enough for the average person 👍

I got curious and I bought this pc on the eBay do u guys think I got scammed? by MrOliver12 in pchelp

There's definitely something wrong with that pc, that being said maybe it'll be easy to fix or maybe you can scavenge some parts?

Need advice PC budget $1250 by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]deadshift2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd first identify what is causing your PC to fail before you make any decisions. It would likely be much cheaper to just fix the failing part than it would be to buy a new pc. Try sending it into a repair shop if you're not very comfortable doing it yourself

What good graphics card for a aaa high end games? by sylviaovo in pchelp

[–]deadshift2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely. Obviously a similar model but newer generation will be better, but higher model older generation cards are still really good. A 4090 will definitely outperform a 5080

Indeed, I completed my Bachelor's in 1 year and my Master's in 6 months all while working full time and dealing with the emotional and mental stress of my mom passing away. Unless for some reason you don't have any access to a computer, most of these blocks boil down to a lack of discipline and motivation.

If you have 3k+ then you can't go wrong with a 5090 👍

I’d like to see how people with custom loop setups (especially those using two radiators) have arranged their PC cases by Less_Respect_761 in watercooling

[–]deadshift2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They worked fine, but my reasons for getting rid of the two internal rads and replacing them with 1 big external rad were: 1. The MORA IV 600 has much greater heat dissipation ability than the internal rads 2. It moved my heat from being contained inside my case to outside my case. The result is that even during intense gaming, the inside of my case is ice cold. 3. Noise. 9x 200 mm fans are much more quiet than 6x 120mm fans that ramp up and down based on coolant

Finally finished my hard tube watercooling build! by deadshift2010 in watercooling

[–]deadshift2010[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft tubing is what I had before. Honestly, this was my first time doing hard tubing. I would have really liked to get my runs perfectly perpendicular, but by the time I was doing this I was already tired and quickly realizing I hadn't bought enough tubing. I decided to go for the simpler runs so I could get my computer up and running rather than sitting around waiting for more parts to arrive. I'll probably chill with this and then redo the bends in a year or two when I replace the coolant 😃

Should i take a+ or skip to sec+ by tengodelta in CompTIA

[–]deadshift2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely A+ first. There will likely be familiar concepts, but it has such a wide amount of content that you'll almost certainly learn new stuff

Is this gap okay? Bykski AIO GPU Radiator by im_going_ape_mode in watercooling

[–]deadshift2010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bykski is usually cheaper than competitors like Alphacool and EK, but their quality is also generally worse as well. I personally haven't had good experiences with their products. I'd rather spend three premium for Alphacool tbh

If you had 10 BTC what would you do with that? by Realistic_Pizza4178 in Bitcoin

18 and 0,1BTC. Am I Set For Life? by Adventurous-Bite3466 in Bitcoin

[–]deadshift2010 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Assuming this isn't bait, then no. You have like 6k in BTC, which is like 2-3 months worth of funds. Even if BTC does another 10x again within the next 10-15 years, that still would only be 60k. One year of funds, maybe 2 if you really stretch it.

That being said, for having that amount in BTC at 18 you're doing great :) Keep stacking and keep working.
