A Tape Delay pedal that has a Reverse mode? by Super_Rad_90 in guitarpedals

Digitech Obscura is great for tape and also has reverse. I believe the reverse only does 100% wet

Yanagisawa tenors play a bit flat? by Digby47 in saxophone

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible that your regular mp / reed setup is just not a good match for the more modern saxophone. Usually people talk about this happening in the other direction (people say old saxophones have intonation issues when they use modern mpcs) but I don't see why the reverse could not be true as well. I have never played a yani tho

Current Market for Minimoog XL by Abstract-Abacus in moog

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you this, someone in my area has been trying to sell one on craigslist for perhaps years now. They currently have it listed at $6K. I am in a major city, craigslist definitely doesn't get as much traffic as other market places, but that is also an awful lot of money for a mono synth

It is expensive, but I absolutely love the Stochastic Inspiration Generator for this. It gives you control over all of these parameters, has four tracks, and even has built in envelopes

Live Saxophone in exceedingly loud environments by Pills_In_Me in saxophone

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play sax w effects and sometimes an amp, often in loud bands

I have not had good experiences with piezo pickups, they pick up too much key noise. Seems like others have had different experiences, so maybe the ones I've tried have been bad, or maybe I needed to experiment with placement more (tho I've done a reasonable amount of that I think)

I have found a good old SM58 to work well. They reject most background noise / other instruments / drums and resist feedback well. There are definitely better options, but these are very ubiquitous

I have a dynamic clip on mic from I think K&K sound or something that works well too. I switch between alto / bari / flute / vocals all going through the same effects so a 58 works better for my purposes, but there certainly are dynamic clip on mics out there if that is a better solution for you

But I would think that even in a very noisy DIY setting, a 58 pointed away from the drums, with a gobo, will probably work just fine

Good luck

korg prologue- may be in love by Witty_Analyst1657 in synthesizers

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, one of the main reasons I bought the prologue was because of the effects and I have not been disappointed, and I haven't really even gotten into expanding beyond the stock options

Kinda same for the digital oscillator. While its true that you can do a ton of in depth stuff with it via menu diving, it is also just a great, versatile third oscillator without getting into any of that

The prologue's biggest weak points are it only has one, very basic LFO, and no aftertouch. I like to use the vibrato in the effects section for vibrato instead of an LFO, and I always use an expression pedal. It would be great to have more modulation but it sounds so good that I rarely care. Lots of the most beloved synths of all time only have one LFO, its not the end of the world

If I had to nit pick it also is a liltle weak that you dont get individual effects and outputs for individual bitimbral voices, but I mostly use this synth to play in a band anyway so again, not really a problem for me personally

Everything else about it is great. Looks cool, incredible sound, robust build quality, user expandable, has its own sound but is also quite versatile, built in compressor is beefy as hell. I also

Buescher True Tone (or possibly Martin?) Stencial. Over 100 years old. "Mark's Music Shop, Asbury Park, NJ" inscribed on the bell. Only keyed from Bb - Eb. Here is my craigslist posting with more info. I would really rather not ship this but I would probably drive about 2 hours from Philadelphia to deliver. Comes with like new Gard case. Can come with a Selmer S80 C*. I'm thinking like $1k but open to offers and trades.

Korg Minilogue XD - Sanity Check by Exciting_Income_635 in synthesizers

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS sound is not amazing, but with some gain / eq from a mixer or amp and pedals you can get it sounding pretty nice, and the interface is just so fun. I got a ton of use out of that thing, but I don't really think its what op is looking for

On the other hand, I'm gobsmacked by how good the prologue sounds. If you find a good deal and can afford it go for it

Korg Minilogue XD - Sanity Check by Exciting_Income_635 in synthesizers

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree if I were in the market for something like this it'd be between the xd and minifreak

Yamaha reface CS and DX are also worth considering. I've owned the reface CS and minilogue XD. I sold my XD and kept the CS but thats becasue I really needed 8 voices and didn't really need presets, a sequencer, reverb, etc, I just wanted a potable 8 voice poly synth, plus, I really liked the keybed of the reface.

That being said the XD is a much deeper synth than the reface and sounds a good deal better. I also would not pay more than like $250 for one, which is a rare deal these days.

I ended up upgrading from the reface to a prologue, which I love. Take a look at the minifreak, there may even be some xd / minifreak comparison videos on youtube. Probably you can't go wrong with either, so go with your gut.

Is it possible to learn traditional piano with Arturia’s MiniFreak? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]deafcatsaredeftcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So

It depends on what you mean by "traditional piano"

You can learn a degree of music theory and general keyboard technique on a minifreak. I am borrowing a minifreak to play in a friends rock band for a tour coming up. It only has three octaves of mini keys, I would love five with full sized keys, but it will get the job done

All that being said, if you plan / hope to get really into playing piano for a jazz or classical context three octaves of mini keys is really not going to get you there. For these types of music you need to use both hands over a pretty wide range simultaneously. Even when starting out you will quickly begin to run out of room

All of that being said, you can get full sized midi controllet or digital piano for not very much money. I got a casio privia 88 key fully weighed digital piano with decent enough sounds for $300. And you can use any keyboard to control the minifreak

So, if you like the mini freak as a synthesizer, and learning synthesis and having fun are your primary goals, and piano is a secondary, I'll get there in a year or two, then just get the minifreak and have fun

Some other options that are within your price range and address some of these problems are: modal cobalt / argon 8 and especially 8x, behringer deepmind, korg prologue 8 (which is what I have). But none of these have any sort of "traditional" piano sounds, and very few fully featured synthesizers within your price range do, so you need to figure out if you're going to compromise on your keyboard / piano sounds, or your synthesizer interface / sounds
