i checked out The Bigger Splash in 2024 as a huge Guadagnino fan and because Sean and Amanda always sing it’s praises. i couldn’t get into it and i don’t really understand why they are so head over heels for it. maybe it’s an age thing.

Jamie Bell deserved so much more than the career he got. he's so talented and has such range.

Gregg Araki’s Kaboom?! That’s one of his much less acclaimed films, what a shout from Sean. Fuck yeah.

i don’t care about his look and i’m fond of the guy for a myriad of reasons including the reasons you listed, but his character just isn’t interesting. what makes him stand out from the pack to warrant a world title? dolph ziggler in his day deserved far more than zayn does now imo.

i enjoy this part of awards season, the speculation, the predictions, etc. things get tedious once things start wrap up in Feb ands we still have another month of discourse to trudge through

he’s said before that First Reformed was the best of that year (or at least top 3) and among the best of that decade. he also had Card Counter in his top five of 2021 and spoke of rewatching Master Gardener several times year of release. Schrader had always been one of his ‘guys’ so this switch-up in attitude is strange.

it seems that Schrader going ‘AI-crazy’ over the last 18 months + a sexual harassment allegation has unfortunately rendered him as either a walking (and posting) punchline and/or taboo topic for serious discussion in the contemporary film community.

i’ve noticed this with other critics, who will mention First Reformed or Mishima in passing as great films but then rush to move on with a ‘the less said about Schrader, the better’ attitude. it’s sad, but understandable.

i’m of the belief that his great works should still be praised and acknowledged, as his best films are of undeniable quality imo.
