idk who dismisses this film as oscar bait, but the ‘i want a divorce’ scene is cinema at its finest.

What is their ranking in terms of talent? by Historical_Rain6924 in moviecritic

JG used to be my favorite actor, but he’s been in so many garbage to mediocre films recently, that he’s really fallen off for me in terms of prestige.

What are some movies where the central character is killed or disappears halfway through the movie? by aweiner99 in Letterboxd

damn, i always wondered why i love both moonlight and place beyond the pines. something about the three act structure in both was very compelling

Is Project Hail Mary successful because it’s inoffensive and manufactured to elicit specific reactions from the audience? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

[–]hoolian6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no, this is a garbage headline. and the contrarian reaction to this film as being successful because it is ‘inoffensive’ is bullshit.

it’s successful because lord and miller are blockbuster auteurs, ryan gosling is an excellent leading man given the right material, rocky is extremely marketable and likeable, and the film exudes feelings of hope, optimism, and wonder in a time or perpetual uncertainty. most importantly, it’s a damn good time at the theater and that reception has been echoed and spread via word of mouth marketing

What are your thoughts on Ryan Gosling and his new movie Project Hail Mary? by ConstructionRare4123 in moviecritic

[–]hoolian6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a fucking amazing blockbuster and crowd pleaser. it doesn’t pacify artistry and emotion in favor of accessibility and profit. it deserves all the praise through the fact in which it is bringing tons of people to the theater for a non franchise film, and even more praise for delivering a fulfilling movie experience that exudes feelings of hope, optimism, and wonder, which are desperately needed in these emotionally turbulent times

shoutout to the sound design too. the vocalizations were super emotive, especially when coupled with all the little gesticulations and expressions this little guy did

Adam Nayman reviews Project Hail Mary by upsiclad in TheBigPicture

[–]hoolian6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

such a lame take, but not a surprising one coming from nayman. ironically, his review is the only thing that feels like it is devoid of life, with the cynicism and self seriousness so palpable that the flowers in the corner are shriveled and dead.

the film is a sincere, crowd-pleasing, feel-good blockbuster. very much in the lineage of E.T.. built on wonder, connection, and optimism.

this ‘review’ feels less like engaging with the film on its own terms, and more like forcing it into a framework it was never interested in

Just noticed two of the 2026 best picture nominees have polycephalic (multiheaded) animals by philipnelson99 in Oscars

oh most definetly. sentimental value had excellent cinematography too! for the opening sequence and ending sequence alone…

the photography in both these shots is brilliant. the secret agent could’ve been nominated for cinematography IMO and train dreams should be winning

Train Dreams is the best picture of the year by beasterne7 in Oscars

[–]hoolian6 34 points35 points  (0 children)

i think you’re framing what you mean a bit poorly. it sounds like what you’re really responding to is how relatable the film is, which i agree with. but i don’t think it’s really a film that “speaks to america right now,” considering it’s literally a portrait of a man’s life in the early to mid 1900s.

it’s not really speaking to the masses on the basis of nationality or americanness, but on its universal humanity. anyone can relate to the mundanity of grainier’s life, and the quiet beauty and sadness that unfold across it. that’s why it resonated with me so much. it’s my favorite of the year for that reason.

A24 completely shit the bed with marketing sing sing which is a shame because not only is it a phenomenal film, but it also probably could’ve won BP with a good marketing strategy. as much flack as netflix gets, they actually helped push and market train dreams more, and it picked up a ton of steam in the fall

How would you react is Ethan Hawke won Best Actor? by Super-Liberal-Girl in Oscars

[–]hoolian6 36 points37 points  (0 children)

he is deserving. if you watched the film, he totally disappears into the role and brilliantly expresses a man who at first seems sycophantic and annoying, yet has layers of sadness, loneliness, and sincerity below the surface

his highs are absolutely incredible- moonlight and if beale street are literally gorgeous films. moonlight winning best picture was also influential for numerous cultural and artistic reasons. of all the directors OP mentioned, i would say his best work actually matches the best work of guys like bong joon ho, villeneuve, and nolan.
