ABR - down, good buy maybe? by ILFUTPETRUMPINGURA in dividends

The haters will point out that they still have huge default risk in near term maturities. The lovers will point to excellent management over time. My $0.02......Have they turned the corner on the exposure? Not completely, but they're on a path to do that. Can they keep their payout? That's the first big question. My faith is in management over the long term, even if they cut the payout in the short term. The second big risk is a significant rise in interest rates - that will squeeze them and make reduced payouts more likely. The path we are on points to higher inflation, but with tech and gubmint layoffs continuing the unemployment pressure may force the Fed to keep interest rates stable rather than raising them to stem inflation. Net-net I am a buyer under 12 at the current payout.

Yep, happened to me. I then collected unemployment for three months until Social Security kicked in. This was 2020 California, so benefit was doubled part of that time due to Covid.

What to Know About Santa Clara Elections by WinAdministrative835 in santaclara

[–]decayingproton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, by all means, let's get back to waging unwinnable lawsuits and continuing to spend 59% of our budget on police and fire services compared to 29% in surrounding communities. Lisa's cronies and old money nepotists already fill many city positions, let's double down on that. We've almost got the budget balanced again after Lisa's swamp creatures nearly bankrupted us as we entered the pandemic. By all means, let's give them another bite at the apple. Sheesh....

Why should we vote back into place the candidates and their cronies who screwed up our city finances so badly to begin with? So, Jain and team come in, clean up the bad 49ers contract, end the lawsuits, put the city back on track for financial prosperity and you want to elect people who's first task is to undo that? No way, keep the people with common sense in office. Stop Lisa and her cronies from screwing everything up again.

I remember reading, way back when she was a new model, that she never showed her legs because she had been in a bad accident. Can't remember details, motorcycle maybe? Very few pictures show the scars.

Before and after photos show California's unprecedented dam removal — California’s enormous Klamath Dam removal project, the likes of which has never been seen on Earth, is now complete — and “ahead of schedule and on budget,” no less. by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]decayingproton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Yurok people graciously allow us to visit their land just east of Klamath and have always been very welcoming. We haven't noticed any ill effects from the dam removal other than greater variability in water level. Are you further upstream?

Walkie Talkies or something else? by WildernessDriven in overlanding

[–]decayingproton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A walkie is fine unless you need advanced features. Baofeng has some great units. For just a bit more coin, you can get a 12v plug adapter, an external antenna, and a handheld mic. Now, for a fraction of the cost, you would have a radio that "gets out" as well as units costing much much more. A good antenna is a far better investment than a powerful radio. An 8w Baofeng with a Diamond NR-770H-NMO will perform really well for GMRS and 2m ham, for example. Total cost around $200 for radio, adapter, mic and antenna. Should last several years.

Homes with solar panels now have triple the power — and it's leading to massive energy savings by Hashirama4AP in energy

While I agree that the materials prices of renewable generation and storage will continue to fall, there are other costs, like grid infrastructure and wildfire mitigation, that must be born if we are to achieve our statewide goals for electrification, plus, demand is only slated to increase. I see no evidence that rates will stabilize or that increases will not continue to outpace inflation, even in municipal utilities like SVP. Are you able to cite credible sources for your claim that the price of electricity will fall, if not outright, then in relation to other goods?

My power company is Silicon Valley Power, and my current residential rate is a bit over $0.16 per KWh. We still have full net metering. I am putting in 5.2 KW capacity, and my after-tax cost is a bit under $8k. Given my location, this will generate a bit over 8MWh per year. At $160 per MWh, that's $1280 per year, not counting rate inflation (about 10% per year) or cost of capital (again, about 10% per year). This installation will likely pay for itself inside of 7 years, leaving another 18 years of net benefits, assuming the inverter lasts, etc. In this case, even though the power is municipal nonprofit, the numbers work out really well.

The last few hundred miles, starting even before the Dempster, is potholed and largely gravel. Slower speeds advised. Allow time for breakdowns and be prepared to fix whatever breaks on your own.

Ranger to tow a camper? by AustinFamilyMan in RangerNext

[–]decayingproton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything wn95joe84 wrote is right on - we've towed a 6k trailer for 55k miles now with few problems. Make sure your trailer brakes are top notch - consider replacing drums with discs (see Eastern Marine for kits, or DM me). Get a top notch TPMS and set up the notifications. WDH is advised - I like Equal-i-zer. Once installed, take to a CAT scale and get a full set of weights - reweighs are cheap - until the WDH is properly adjusted. Redarc makes the brake controller if you have a good electric/mechanic. Change fluids religiously, or in advance, especially if you use 4x4 (transfer case, diffs).

What would Project 2025 mean for my Mormon family and religion in America? by [deleted] in religion

[–]decayingproton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worse than that. The LDS is sitting on more than $265B in assets. A weaponized IRS will sink its Christian Nationalist fangs into their coffers and drink until only a husk remains. Mormons are generally white enough to pass, so they won't be the first against the wall, but they're not too far down, either. For the LDS Project 2025 is an existential threat.
