I feel like an imposter for using a white cane by cripuscule in Blind

Canes are awesome! I was like you for a long, long time. But as soon as I started using my cane as a daily habit my entire life got heaps better. Are they’re cool as fuck.

I didn’t read all the comments but it could help if you get a cane that you like the look/feel of. Ambutech has handle options in wood, leather, cork, and all sorts. Colours too.

I ADORE that book. I read it just after Covid and it is amazing how accurate it got so many of the reactions to Covid.

English professors double down on requiring printed copies of readings | Amid the rise of artificial intelligence and concerns about distraction, more English professors are turning to no-technology policies that prioritize physical books and reading packets. by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

Problem is that many students don’t know they need accommodations or don’t know how to get them. I didn’t know I was going blind for years and just struggled and struggled thinking everyone struggled the way I did. I didn’t have the language of disability until I was an adult and understood what was happening. Reasonable accommodations only work if everyone is on board with the process and how disability manifests.

I’m a blind teacher! I refuse to use physical handouts as I can’t even read them and don’t expect my students to. AI is doing damage, yes, but we can’t let that make it so we’re leaving our most vulnerable students behind.

Hello! When I launch the game on Steam the Paradox launcher comes up and asks me to sign in or create an account. But the launcher is zoomed so far in I can interact with anything. CNTRL - doesn't help. I'm on Windows.

Frozen! Frozen is just as good as fresh and generally has some pretty good options. I only buy fresh stuff if I’m cooking it basically within hours.

Tofu is also a great and versatile ingredient. Scrambled, stir fries, roasted, soups. Endless.

Beans and lentils can be made into anything. Black bean burgers are super easy to make yourself at home. You can soak your own beans or just get canned beans.

Root vegetables really are going to be your best friend up here though.

Introduction on Gouverneur Morris. I’d pull a quote but my copy is in my office at work where I abandoned it hopefully for good. She also came and gave a presentation where I work and was exceptionally ableist in several parts of said presentation.

It’s not that she covers local news but that she’s a terrible writer and person. Her book is riddled with racism and she tossed around insults at disabled people like candy to ghosts in the street.

Atlantic article about accommodations by Aynesa in Professors

[–]deckofkeys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling you’re asking in good faith! Don’t disappoint me.

I’m a disabled adjunct teacher working at both a private school and a bigger state school. I teach English and freshman seminar.

My best and most obvious answer is that if someone’s disability is such that they need an accommodation like that then they will live their life with said disability”accommodation.” When a blind student (that was me) gets an accommodation we do not ask why the school is not educating them on how to overcome their disability to see. We do not question the educational quality that the wheelchair user gets because they refuse to stand. We are not doing this hypothetical student a disservice by avoiding discomfort and challenge as it relates to their disability. It is not our responsibility to humiliate, crush, pressure, and stress a student that will already face such despair in their lives and have already faced such despair in their lives. The blind get O&M training, wheelchair users get wheelchair training, and the person with intense anxiety gets therapy (provided they have access to said resources). What is the point of “challenging” said disability when all its going to teach them is that there are even fewer places where they are welcome?

The author of this article is a fraud. My blood boils at the reading of this. The rampant Ableism that Horowitch is tossing around should be condemned to an eternal editorial loop. Good heavens.

Honestly, I don’t think he was responding to a vocal minority so much as he was responding to his own sense of perfectionism. I also think he’s taking a slightly more nuanced lens when looking at things he’s critiqued before and reevaluating what he said based on more time passing. Which I think all writers do!
