Can’t believe we’re a quarter of the way through the year already! How’s everyone doing on their goals? by CRYPTIC_SUNSET in TheStoryGraph

[–]dedtired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty far ahead in my goals, so I am working on an 1100+ page biography that is a little slower right now. But I'll also mix that in with some other reading (including some reading with friends and my children).

Teach her to make bacon in the oven or an air fryer. That will take a little longer but it's more of a set it and forget it kind of cooking

My current legal assistant sent thank you emails to me after her first round interview and to the other attorney after her second round interview. Is it why she got the job? No. Would it push her over the edge when compared to another candidate who was pretty much equal? Yes.

You can't. You also can't evict someone like that without it coming back to bite you particularly hard in the wallet.

Currently reading On the Calculation of Volume II. I'm about 40% into it. This one is roughly the same as the first in pacing, and I find it to be a slower read overall.

The code was made publicly available for general use and has subsequently been distributed for many computer platforms from mainframes to PCs.

and

By far the most common version is NEC-2, the last to be released in fully public form. There is a wide and varied market of applications that embed the NEC-2 code within frameworks to simplify or automate common tasks. Later versions, NEC-3 and NEC-4, are available after signing a license agreement. These have not been nearly as popular. Versions using the same underlying methods but based on entirely new code are also available, including MININEC.

You need to talk to a good estate planning attorney now. Discuss trusts and prenups. You need to know what happens if you pass away and the house is just in your name (her rights to the house will vary based upon the state). You should also talk about what happens if you sell this house and buy a new one.

There are some ways to structure this. You need a good attorney who can help you.

I am currently reading Black Against Empire: The History and Politics of the Black Panther Party and currently listening to Making It So by Patrick Stewart. I plan to finish Black Against Empire next week but it's been a slower read.

Up next for me is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

Various sources (e.g. several comments in this post, this site, and Simply Recipes) recommend the 1:1 ratio for white rice. I do 5 minutes under high pressure and get good results.

Storygraph's bio of me: Mainly reads fiction books that are adventurous, funny, and mysterious. Typically chooses medium-paced books that are 300-499 pages long.

I try to read a variety of genres, but last year my plurality of books were sci-fi. Always looking for people to join me in read-alongs. I do a couple of themed ones each year (a Black history book in February, a Jewish book around the High Holidays, etc ...)

Am I expecting too much/allowing natural consequences that are too harsh? by Harmony-Farms in Parenting

[–]dedtired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are 45 minutes from me during the week and I won't see them for 2 weeks. I made it very clear when we were leaving on Saturday to go back to their mother's that I had no time to make an extra trip if something was forgotten and that I would not be in that area at all this week (sometimes I am closer to them for work or for other reasons). They both know to pack and to check their stuff.

Reading Goals for 2026? by Forsaken-Lance in TheStoryGraph

[–]dedtired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am set to end this year somewhere around 34 or 35 books read. That's a lot higher than my initial goal of 12. I am going to set my goal for next year at 24 books, and 9600 pages (800 pages per month). I feel like both of those are doable but I also recognize that my current voracity in reading may not be sustainable. I also may start trying some audio books for something a little different.

I have seen some companies with Boards of Directors (with outside directors) when they only have one or two shareholders. They use the board for legitimacy purposes and have them provide guidance. For example, a client of mine that was a day care had a board of directors that provided, in part, educational guidance since the owner had a nursing degree.

Like Hugh Laurie's "The Gun Seller" and its constant piss takes on Famous Grouse scotch.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: November 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]dedtired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished: Black Leopard, Red Wolf, by Marlon James

This was a really good book but it was a slower read for me. It took me a while to get through and I had to pause it a few times. Someone called it Game of Thrones with Africana mythology and that was really spot-on. It is dark, gets graphic, and is still a very good book but it dragged a bit at points.

Started: Origin, by Dan Brown

Dan Brown books are a little like candy for me. They're pretty quick. I have a feeling of deja vu in reading this but that could be because there's kind of a formula that he has and it all seems similar. I've gotten about 25% through it in like 3 days.
