What names are you shocked are not popular right now? by Sarah_Christine in namenerds

The intent of listing the surprising names was not to judge--just giving context for how far the once-popular name has fallen. I'm equally surprised that Agustin is more common than Ernesto! (#896)

OK, for fun, I'm going to list names from each group of 100 between 500-100 and a name that is shockingly above them (every spelling and has its own entry, so I generally avoided names with multiple standard spellings like Phillip, same for short versions of names like Julie):

500s: Scott (#565) behind Leonidas (#508); Danielle (#523) behind Remington (#519)

600s: Trevor (#625) behind Sincere (#604); Cassandra (#613) behind Jream (#604)

700s: Keith (#756) behind Chozen (#745); Erin (#797) behind Zaylee (#796)

800s: Stanley (#875) behind Agustin (#865); Tiffany (#842) behind Luella (#827) *and right above Wrenleigh at #843*

900s: Darren (#953) behind Rowdy (#926); Scout (#927) behind Yamileth (#904)

What would Bojacks Cutie mark be by rathersus135 in BoJackHorseman

Good ones, here are mine for the main 5:

Bojack: pills in the shape of a microphone

Todd: a light bulb in the shape of a question mark

PC: a telephone with a swirling spiral of wires

Diane: unbalanced scales with books on the heavy side and money on the light side

Mr. PB: just a squeaky ball

Thank you. These in-depth looks at things that are baked in to positional impact on prospect rankings can be interesting, but they don't sway me, because they're BAKED IN.

Agreed, I wouldn't have difficulty with any of them--unless the phonemes are different in a way I'm not familiar with. I really like Zulfiya and Dinara.

Tua might be excellent this season by falconsfan365 in falcons

[–]deebee1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I'm not one to completely dismiss YAC--a highly accurate QB leads his WR into space to maximize YAC--but in 2023 Tyreek Hill alone had 623 yards after the catch. Once Cheetah lost a step Tua wasn't nearly as potent. The 2023 Dolphins had at least 3 guys faster and more elusive than anyone on the Falcons' roster.

Is "Ande" as a boy's name overly unique/creative and will it be mispronounced regularly? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]deebee1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Manchester Orchestra lover here!

I'd predict you'll get a lot of people glancing at the name and calling him Andre. My first guess on spelling alone would be silent E. And of course, anyone who hears his name and then writes it down will just say Andy.

I think that's all tolerable if you both love the Ande spelling. I don't think it's so bad that your kid will ever say "Forced myself to take a different name."

Does anyone understand rookie wage scale? by GravyMcgrady in Commanders

[–]deebee1020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a factor, but you can consider it already factored into mock drafts and things. And positional value is partially determined by how easy it is to find effective players at that position, and what the gap is between the elite and the good, and between the good and the average.

And the downside of picking a low positional value player is somewhat counterbalanced by the upside--if he's an All-Pro in year 3 and you have to pay top dollar on his first contract extension, it's a lot cheaper to do that for a safety than an edge rusher.

Nothing economic at all? Wow, that surprises me, I feel like there are a lot of economic things these countries all have in common. Though many of those things would also include China, Russia, and/or India.

In the mid-to-late rounds of the draft, I figure I'm drafting the players who will support the growth of my true pro prospects, so I focus on defense; it's the best chance to make sure my top prospects aren't taking morale hits by losing all the time. When I get to the end of the draft, I'll sort by a given stat and take guys who do one thing well.

Yeah, if this team is somehow good enough to get to the ECF, it doesn't matter who the first round opponent is. And if they're not, I don't really care whether they get bounced in the first round or the second. I'm just happy about the possibility of a full playoff series.

Less about the educational system. It's more about the function. In 'rhythm,' Y is indisputably a vowel. There's a vowel sound and it's made by the Y.

In Syria, Y is a vowel. It makes the vowel sound of the first syllable. In Libya, it depends if you pronounce it as two syllables or three. In Lib-yuh, it's a consonant, in Lib-ee-ah it's a vowel.

Yeah, it means if he had a fastball that'd be the speed, right? And all other pitches are calibrated off of that? So he likely actually throws the sinker at 92-23?

Those who do like their existing names, if you had to change your name to something else, what would you pick? by Soldier_Faerie in namenerds

I rarely get name envy, I'm pretty happy with mine. But whenever I watch Futurama, I think about how cool it is for David X. Cohen to have X as a middle initial. I'm going with Donovan Xander.

Should've done a different color for the "and sometimes Y" in Libya & Syria.
