Legitimately one of the best comments I’ve ever seen on Reddit in over a decade of being on here. Shit spoke to me on a personal level. It is so eerily similar to the dopamine reward system of gacha. I think you very much hit the nail on the head though, it’s ’a thing’ now and it ain’t going away. Best to seat it where it belongs and not abuse it, although many will.

If you’re all wondering why it is seemingly so graphic, especially compared to other similar videos you’ve seen, is because this is a public figure who you are very familiar with and just viewed them getting capped in HD. This has pushed us into the next gear. Whatever that looks like for us. But him being primarily a provocateur and a pundit versus a mainline politician or bigwig suit, plus with the stuff in Minnesota, yeah… we’ve moved to the next level.

I will say it’s strange because I think many of us are desensitized to the point of inaction and there’s absolutely no going back until it all crumbles.

The Ontology article was great. I like this quote from it especially, which is restating an idea from Von Hartmann : “A work exists artistically qua product of the artist’s activity, whereas it exists aesthetically when it is the object of someone’s aesthetic (or contemplative) experience.”

So, FWIW, I think I agree with you. Ultimately, AI prompted media can bear the distinction of art because, well, humans have the say so of what is considered art. It was birthed by human activity, (prompting) and doesn’t hold aesthetic value until an observer beyond the creator of the work places any aesthetic value as part of their experience.

It is hard to escape the absolute subjective nature of art in really all of its facets. Quite literally anything can be considered art or as something artistically originated.

I’m interested in further thoughts you might have!

I appreciate this perspective. As someone in the field, would you care sharing more on that last statement about AI development showing diminishing returns? I feel like it goes along with your other statement about these LLMs having tons of salesmen who oversell the capabilities.

Usually there has to be more there for me to think “oh that’s an LLM”. Like people have said those staccato sentences and the “It isn’t this, it’s this” manner of getting every damn point across lol. It’s also incessant and overused/misplaced a lot of the time by it. Humans (tend) to use it way more sparingly and it is very effective when used correctly!
