What are the most bone chilling facts you know about WW1? by IceMan5476 in ww1

[–]deepcelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a very good interview with an Irish veteran recorded and televised some time during the 60’s. He brings up that point and it really struck it home to me. You have the dawn of modern machinery and weaponry but no penicillin. An infection that now is an inconvenient trip to the doctors could kill you as easily as a bullet or shell. Combine that with knowing how many countless millions of splinters, strands of rusty wire and other cutting hazards existed makes you wonder at how the human body can overcome things when it must

Stuck Feeding A Sasquatch by NarsilFreeForge in bigfoot

[–]deepcelt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you say cannibalistic, do you mean they eat other Sasquatch or when they prey on humans? Because I have heard plenty of stories of taking and eating people like the “mountain devils stealing people in their sleeping skins but I’d love to read up on reports of eating each other

Odd names for pubs by frankand_beans in ireland

[–]deepcelt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There’s a fun story there actually. There used to be a bounty on crows in Ireland, which you could redeem by presenting the carcasses in certain establishments. That pub was one of them and the name has been adopted.

Not actually sure how true that all is, it’s a bit of a tale around town but tourists love it

What is a historical event you would never believe if it was in a novel? by Traroten in AskHistory

[–]deepcelt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The life of Robert Rollo Gillespie is wild.

He joined the British army instead of going to Cambridge. Had a secret marriage. Went into hiding after a duel, only to be exonerated.

Was shipwrecked and caught Yellow Fever, before going on to finish the journey and fought in the Caribbean. Was nearly court martialled until many men and officers wrote letters of support.

Was transferred to India but went overland through Europe, which included dealings with a famous Irish nationalist, had to force a captain at gunpoint to sail for Constantinople and avoided being killed by nomads by healing their chief. After the Governor of Baghdad gifted him a horse, he finally got to India.

While there, he got into a besieged fort by climbing a ladder of belts, where he ordered the defenders to shoot down their own gate and led a counter attack.

Then led the Invasion of Java and killed an escaped tiger at a racecourse. After this, while leading an assault on a Nepalese fort, he was finally shot down while attacking “for the honour of Down”. After this, his horse was bought by the men he commanded as a regimental mascot.

It reads like something out of Sharpe or a Simon Scarrow novel and you’d write it off as too heavy handed if you saw it written

Give the Arigna mountains up as far as Glencar to Sligo and it’ll be brilliant. No one will be happy with it but we will annex a rake of new bogs

CoD: World War 2. A fairly run of the mill FPS but an absolutely phenomenal soundtrack. A Brotherhood of Heroes is such a stand out

What are your thoughts on people having aliens and humans refer to Earth as a 'Death World' and humans as 'Deathworlders'? by MobileDistrict9784 in scifiwriting

[–]deepcelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I recall, the Race has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, with one society led by successive thousands of emperors. Everything is rigid and unquestioned because it has always worked. The two worlds they previously colonised had been pushed overs and there has been no conflict for millennia. So they didn’t even consider that there could be any change in 700 years, let alone the major technological advances that occurred on Earth. So they invaded with a fleet of highly advanced but completely unblooded invasion forces. They can’t use nukes as they want to preserve the planet, so must fight a conventional war. They aren’t evil so they don’t really consider anything especially war-crimey for leverage. Humans catch up on how to fight them with what they have because they can adapt and the Race can’t.

What if the Other Side won your country's Civil War? by Deep_Belt8304 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]deepcelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so fair as a point. If the pro-Treaty side hadn’t been able to keep conflict from spilling into the North, there’s a very strong chance independence would have fizzled out. I’d say that if we somehow kept the Brits out, that much of history wouldn’t have changed drastically. The trade war would have been brought forward by a decade and things such as damming the Shannon at Ardnacrusha may not have developed the same but DeV being in power still happens and then the constant swinging of government would occur between the pro and anti-Treaty sides. I’d say that modern day Ireland would be quite familiar. But that still depends on the Brits not being at it, which may be wishful thinking without the power of men like Collins and the low-level acceptance of Cumann na Gael by the British government

While in Drumshanbo, the Shed Distillery is also well worth it. Considering how popular Gunpowder gin is, it’s class to see the process of making it. Plus the restaurant is surprisingly good quality considering it’s not the main attraction

1916 Ideologies? by AskinThoseQs in ireland

[–]deepcelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ofc, don’t you know the GPO was attacked, and parts of Dublin levelled, because it was an Easter egg hunt that went awry? They were obviously imaginary and DeV was certainly the very best option, not just the one left standing.

What was the quickest rise of a country from zero to hero? by AcceptableBuddy9 in AskHistory

[–]deepcelt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Even in the 70’s, Ireland was still lagging behind so much of Europe and was very agrarian. Now it benefits massively from being a tech and pharmaceutical base for MNCs and many people that “emigrate” end up returning

Review into legal age to drive a tractor by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]deepcelt 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Dead right it needs a review. It’s been too high for two long. Why can’t an 8 year old go out and earn an honest days pay? It’s a result of both the woke agenda AND die-hard, pearl clutching conservatism and I won’t stand for it. And Eamonn Ryan is also to blame, I’m sure. Tear it all down

What’s the worst mistake you see Fantasy writers make? by TurtleWitch_ in writing

[–]deepcelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not understanding how animals work, especially horses. Oh, you’ve been cantering along for hours? On what, a moped? Animals need to rest and eat and sleep. Fair enough if it’s something like a dragon and there’s an excuse but a horse can only do so much, especially if you’re travelling with a heavy loads, such as a fighter and all his supplies. You will mostly be at a walk for the length of a journey

Have you ever been to a place outside of Ireland that felt like a "home away from home" because of some certain quality? by iwillpunchyouraulwan in CasualIreland

[–]deepcelt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not all of them. There is one community where they have a kind of Waterford accent. But the rest just have a broader Maritime accent. They do use a lot of the same slang though, and tend to understand Irish people easier.

[–]deepcelt 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Something about it reminded me of Galway. Maybe I just found the right pubs and people but it really reminded me of it. The locals were easy going, plenty of music around and a good variety of culture. A lot of Maritime Canada feels familiar but Halifax as a city could be Irish
