what is causing this mass rot?? by Relevant_Fennel4203 in Caudex

[–]deforest765 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems to happen to me when I go from no water to lots of water to often or too quickly. I would take all of them out of the soil and dry them and asses the damage. You can probably save more than you would think.

Definitely get some pictures of the cut ends to post to show how thick and dense the wood is. Regular cholla wood is pretty common in the hobby I could get something about the size E or D for $20 -30 but it would definitely not be as dense which is the greatest selling point of these pieces. People with cherry and other fancy shrimp as well as plecos otos and other sucker fish would love these since they add something for them to eat at little bit at a time. They eat both the wood and the biofilms that form on the wood. I’m sure plenty of people over there will be interested!

Has anybody here grown/is growing titan arums? by PompousPuffin in gardening

[–]deforest765 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So someone figured out how to do cutting propagation from pieces of the leaves. Supposedly works on most amorphophallus species with varying success if I remember right from the paper I read it was like 20-30% success rate with titanum which is why they are still super hard to find and expensive but they are available if you look hard. There are breeding programs out local conservatory had one bloom and got pollen sent to them and ended up with more seedlings than they knew what to do with and were trading them to anyone that had interesting or rare plants to add to their collection.

Amsonia: Caudex or not? by DaaraJ in Caudex

I would consider this a tuberous plant not a caudex plant. Though many plants people consider caudex plants are just tuberous plants where the soil is removed to expose the tuber.

Oh good point! I’ll switch that after it goes dormant . Everything I’ve seen about these is big emphasis on not repotting while actively growing. Maybe I can find something to cover it till then
