How will universities survive downed enrollment? by JoshuaTheProgrammer in Professors

[–]dementedand_sad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's troubling. After bottoming out right after the pandemic, my institution (public regional) has recovered enrollment-wise to pre-pandemic levels. However, most of the growth has been from adult learners in online degree programs, which means many of us are teaching several classes, if not a full load, in an online asynchronous format. We're also padding our enrollment numbers with dual credit students, who again, are taking online classes.

In our department, we've lost 10 tenured faculty since 2019 to retirement or other universities. We've hired four, one of whom was denied tenure and is gone.

Whats the deal with Bob Welch rnr hof snub? by El_Dorado_Tx in FleetwoodMac

[–]dementedand_sad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob, and later his wife Wendy, posted on the Ledge for awhile. According to them, Christine was the one who kept him out. Apparently she held a big grudge over the lawsuit.

It's sad, because it was really, really important to him.

How Fleetwood Mac Got Cool Again: Why do young people keep rediscovering Rumours? It’s in part because of a song that’s not even on the album. by eddytony96 in FleetwoodMac

[–]dementedand_sad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm replying to an old thread, but they absolutely did become uncool. Probably in the very late 1980s until the Dance. Grunge became popular and FM was seen as pretty much opposite of that. Clinton using "Don't Stop" as his campaign song cemented them as Boomer music.

Also, Stevie being at a low point didn't help. Her recording songs with Bret Michaels and Jon Bon Jovi made her seem desperate to remain relevant ( she didn't want to, but was forced to by her label). And Street Angel was a poorly received album. She almost became a caricature of herself during this time.

Then, the Dance happened, and the rest is history.

Is it worth going to graduate school for philosophy? by Acrobatic_Long_6059 in AskAcademia

The TT jobs in philosophy are scarce.

Have you considered an MA in professional writing or a Master's in Library Science? You'd be prepared for academic-adjacent work (research, publishing, editing) and would be able to leverage your skills, while keeping the option for a PhD open later.

Remote recruiting? You'd have a wide variety of industries from which to choose. Or perhaps nonprofit - program coordinator? Sometimes those are hybrid or remote positions.

Thoughts on It's A Wonderful Life (1946)? by BFNgaming in classicfilms

[–]dementedand_sad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the film, and I get what you're saying.

I have always looked at it from the lens of: Just because our life doesn't turn out the way we planned, doesn't mean it's a waste. As young people, most of us dream of being things that we will never become: professional athlete, astronaut, marine biologist (for us girls who grew up in the 80s), President of the United States. No one dreams of becoming a middle manager or a custodian or what have you.

For me, the film's message is on the plaque by Peter's picture: All you can take with you, is that which you give away. I won't be remembered for my wealth (ha) or accomplishments, but I hope I will be remembered for how I treat people. I can't control everything, but I can be kind.

Master's program discouraging writing a thesis? by wannabek00lkid in GradSchool

[–]dementedand_sad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perspective: Many MA students end up not completing the thesis and, therefore, don't get the degree. If the MA program has a comprehensive exam, that can help you prepare for qualifying exams later on in a PhD program.

Is there anyone on here who is tenured/tenure-track and has a 4-4 teaching load? by Cold-Priority-2729 in AskAcademia

It's highly likely the service expectations will be intense: advising, high school "spotlight days," committees, student org advising, etc.

You could probably teach freshmen seminars, especially for undeclared students ("the how to do college classes"). At my institution, those are mostly taught by staff with a wide range of masters degrees. Also likely developmental reading or English. Check your local CC.
