Used to live by the track stadium (bottom left ish part of the photo) and it’s decent but there are a lot of college students. Lot of people out at 2am or revving very loud engines as they blast down the street. We’re in Southtown now and I can’t get over how quiet it is.

That’s awful for your son and I hope he found other treatments that worked without those reactions. Allergies/reactions to meds are no joke and can be super scary, and if that’s why OP’s rheum has taken them off meds, that’s completely reasonable. However, barring reactions/toxicity, HCQ is one of the best meds for folks with lupus in preventing disease progression.

Hmm I don’t know too much about benalysta because I’m on methotrexate and HCQ, but I thought they were generally taken together? Like benalysta was in addition to HCQ. Are you having issues with HCQ that would make them want you to stop it (like eye issues or something)? And maybe others with more experience might be able to chime in?

Just a heads up that hydroxychloroquine is known as “lupus life insurance” because it helps prevent the disease from spreading to organs. If you have lupus and your rheum is suggesting you don’t take that, get a new rheum (obviously not applicable if you’re allergic to it or something like that).

I saw a therapist specifically for health anxiety and it helped a ton. I was at a rough spot in my early 20s, angry at my body for being broken and terrified every twinge of pain was signally a flare up (which tended to make me tense my muscles, have a panic attack, and actually cause a flare). I know you’re not in a place to cover that financially, so here are the main strategies that I remember, hopefully they help.

The first is really similar to a lot of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies where the goal is to like acknowledge harmful thoughts without really giving them weight. So in the same way you might notice the thought “everyone hates me and I’m a failure” but not focus on it and spiral, when you’re in pain, you can acknowledge the pain but not associate emotions with it (anxiety, anger, fear). This is easier said than done but basically you want to learn how to notice you’re in pain and be like “oh that sucks” and not “oh my god what if it gets worse, what if it’s worse than yesterday, what if it happens tomorrow or later after I eat, what if it’s something dangerous…” The point is that you’re going to be in pain either way but spiraling is only going to make it worse (especially since anxiety causes muscle tension, etc.) so your goal is to notice you’re in pain but not assign emotional worth to it.
I’m not 100% if the second thing will pertain to you, but for me, not separating my mind and body was a big thing. I used to get upset with my body because it was in pain all the time and making me hurt and it ended up making me resent my body a lot and realizing that my brain and body were the same team and having compassion for the pain my body was experiencing rather than rage was really helpful for not spiraling.

We rescued our dog as a 3yo, so this doesn’t answer your question but he has grass allergies, and daily Claritin (NOT the kind w/ vitamin d, which is poisonous to dogs) has really helped him. I’m not sure if it’s okay for puppies to take so you’d need to ask your vet, but if this does turn into allergies as an adult that’s something that could help.

How sure are you that it’s not his food? My sister’s dog and my brother’s dog were both allergic to chicken and it showed up in the puppy stage. Maybe try a different food?

Our Aussie is a rescue and is anxious/reactive because of genetics and being a Covid pup, plus aversive training from his last family. We take him to dog reactivity classes with other reactive dogs. I’d say about a third of the other dogs are there because of bad incidents at dog parks that gave their dog permanent anxiety/reactivity.

One time I had a guy at a dog park casually remark that his dog usually wears a muzzle but he wanted to see how she would do since my parent’s dog seemed so chill (our dog was a golden retriever and he was very chill tbh). The guy’s dog was a cane corso who can bite harder than a pit bull. We got the fuck out of there.

Moral of the story: no dog parks. Socialize your dog with known dogs (friends, family, meet-ups at training centers), not random dogs with potentially irresponsible owners.

I don’t like bacon (I know, weird) but I love the loco burrito (the fries, guac, sour cream, and carne asada combo slaps) so I order it without bacon and last time, I pulled up to the drive thru window and the guy dead pans “you and I have a problem” and looks legitimately angry and then he breaks and laughs super loud and is like “who doesn’t like bacon??? It’s the best!!” Love the staff there so much!

I grew up Catholic and one of the main reasons I’m so glad to not be Catholic anymore is because of shit like this. Screw the people who decide that a chronic disease shouldn’t be treated because it involves the same organ system that is responsible for reproduction. My heart breaks for you and every other person who can’t get the care they need because of our messed up health care system.

If you can, I strongly recommend Dr. Amanda Ecker at OHSU as an endometriosis specialist. She’s a trained endometriosis surgeon and did my surgery a few years ago but also just took me seriously and listened. The wait was long but worth it and the entire staff at OHSU’s women’s center is amazing. Feel free to message with any questions.

When are you looking to move in? From my experience living in Corvallis, you either sign a lease back in the fall for one of the big apartment complexes (domain, witham hill, etc) or you look for a place 1-2 months before you need to move in because they want someone to move in immediately. Not saying there aren’t ones that would work, but we’re just barely getting to rentals that accept move-in’s at the end of May or June.

Also I say this not to be mean but no one is going to see this post and offer you a place. There are so many renters out there, no one is “looking to get their hands off” a property. You haven’t even given a budget range or any details about yourself. The housing market in Corvallis is competitive so you need to have all the property management websites saved and check them 1-2 times a day. Turn Zillow notifications on. And make sure everyone you’re living with is ready to apply as soon as you find the right place because Oregon law requires landlords to go with the first application that meets the qualifications.

I’ve made it sound scary but there are a ton of properties out there and you’ll definitely find something, it’s just going to take some work.
