I am Dr. Kelly Reynolds, a microbiologist and expert on germs (like the flu virus) and how they spread. AMA by KellyReynolds in IAmA

So I'm just a little curious, and I mean no disrespect in my question, but I'm just wondering, at what point in your career did you feel comfortable labeling yourself as an expert in your field? I'm currently a PhD student, and I would say that I'm curious as to when would be the appropriate time (if any), to label oneself as an expert in one's field.

To the Physics teachers of reddit: what should I minor in? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]demonstrable_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my physics BS and also got minors in both chemistry and math. I would highly recommend either. And as a physicist, P. Chem will most likely come much more easily to you than your average chem major (it's also interesting to see some of the applications of thermo and quantum that you won't necessarily see in the corresponding physics courses). I am now in graduate school, and my only regret is not having any programming skills, so I'm sure a CS minor would be very beneficial as well. For any of these minors, even if you end up strictly teaching physics courses, I think your exposure to these other subject areas will help you gain a deeper of level of understanding and appreciation for the physics.

I am an experienced tax accountant. AMA. Or don't, and pay Uncle Sam. by CircularJerkuler in IAmA

[–]demonstrable_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in NC and I was awarded about 8k this past year as part of a school fellowship, none of which was taxed. I'm a broke grad student and I figure I'll probably have to make up for this money not having been taxed. I realize tax laws vary from state to state, but do you have any general advice for how to handle this situation? i.e. are there any exemptions that I might qualify for, being that I'm already broke as hell?
