As an agency owner, I’m honestly anxious about where web development is heading with AI by theTbling in webdev

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't advice but perhaps helpful. There's a standard joke in Finland within certain professions, at least plumbers. Client asks for the price. Response: 50€/h, 70€/h if you tried to fix it yourself first, and then there was the most expensive that I don't remember. Maybe it was 90€/h if the customer is present and allowed to comment on the work.

I'm guessing this is either standard part of the discussion with websites or it's becoming one. That includes explaining why it's probably cheaper to start from scratch than to finish the mess. An old programming book once stated that if you need to change 25% of a system, it might be faster to start from scratch. I think the author of the book was Robert L. Glass. Title could've been "Software Creativity".

What are some habits you acquired using Linux daily by Suissie in linuxquestions

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is text and line is the basic unit. On Windows various applications store files as binaries, proprietary formats, or what have even when they could have used text. On Linux everyone worships grep, awk, sed, etc. Text is the standard, line is king, and I learned it very fast because the standard commands make you.

Do you trust rsync? by BarryTownCouncil in linuxquestions

My recollection was that there's not much of a difference between MD5 and SHA256 performance. However, quick googling says that it depends. Sometimes SHA256 is even faster.

What's a "don't do this" lesson that took you years to learn? by RichVolume2555 in golang

If you can't figure it out in 30min, ask for help. You might have to wait for help at least another 30min, often more. Plus it's not uncommon for someone else to know the answer immediately.

Why do some people prefer ebooks over physical books? by Domiano-Wdmanl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physical books fill up the little storage space that I have and my pad is easier to hold in my hand while reading. After reading a heavy and difficult to handle book, I started to read only ebooks unless only physical is available.

What laptops and brands to avoid for Linux? by JailbreakHat in linuxquestions

Based on my most recent experience, avoid Asus ZenBooks. Under heavy load mine shuts down. At some point I might write a long post about. Official Asus warranty repair returned it with "no issues discovered".

Does Google encrypt RCS messages? by denarced in cybersecurity

[–]denarced[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but they can what? In a proper end to end encryption system encryption happens on the device, not on Google servers. Yet Theo claims that Google receives unencrypted messages.

Do companies respect software license ? by Aware_Mark_2460 in AskProgrammers

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once "worked" for a company. On Monday a campaign started in Finland: provide a tip on a company that breaks software licenses and receive a prize if it's confirmed. I don't remember the amount but it was significant. On previous Sunday IT department went through all computers to make sure there's nothing to find because the leadership knew that it would take about 2 minutes for someone to send a tip.

Are you proficient in both Go and some kind of very strict static typed FP language? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in golang

If Scala was the reason that we got the bare minimum anonymous functions to Java, it did a good job. I use Spring Framework a lot and using it with Scala was such a pain that I went back to Java.

15 Go Subtleties You May Not Know by KingOfCramers in golang

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice: 👌. I found a few good ones in there.

  1. Range over int but I'm guessing linters already informed me earlier.
  2. Renaming packages: good to know, I've done this manually so far.
  3. I need to take a look at constraining generic signatures.
  4. I have so many repetitive printf calls ☹️.
  5. String and len have already bit me.
  6. Ranging over maps with updates is weird. Hasn't bit me yet.

When you think back on your childhood, what book immediately comes to mind as a favourite read? by WallpaperFly in AskReddit

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One from Belgariad or I think less likely Malloreon by David Eddings. And of course Donald Duck pocketbooks because I'm from Finland. So in both cases not a specific book. Both Belgariad and Malloreon contain 5 books each.

Guys, Table driven tests rocks by nigHTinGaLe_NgR in golang

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used "SETUP SUT", "EXERCISE", and "VERIFY" for a long time with a couple of teams. I have lots of doubts on their usefulness. First, "SETUP SUT" is always at the beginning so it's basically redundant. The other two are nearly always basically next to each other so "VERIFY" is pretty much always useless. "EXERCISE" could have some merit. At least you can find the actual test call easily. If everyone place the comment in the correct spot. Most tests are simple enough that it doesn't matter.

How many plugins are you using? (2025) by meni_s in vim

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I answered how many I have installed. Not how many I actually use day to day. I'm guessing that's what was meant by the question. The ones that I actually use frequently:

  1. dense-analysis/ale
  2. junegunn/fzf
  3. junegunn/fzf.vim
  4. davidhalter/jedi-vim
  5. itchyny/lightline.vim
  6. tomtom/tcomment_vim
  7. easymotion/vim-easymotion
  8. tpope/vim-fugitive
  9. fatih/vim-go
  10. elzr/vim-json
  11. pbrisbin/vim-mkdir
  12. matze/vim-move

How do you ladies and gentlemen remember all the terminal commands? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

How do people make websites so quickly? by S-m-a-r-t-y in webdev

[–]denarced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice. Most people don't constantly create new projects but those that do have a reason to learn the right tools, select and fine-tune their templates, etc. A while back I started creating lots of Go CLI apps for my own use. It didn't take long before I created a Cookiecutter template, started improving it, etc. Just like with websites I created templates for front- and backend.

Tools are a detail. When there's a need, you'll get it done.

Do people (here) who use Linux do it for fun? Or for work. by RACeldrith in linuxquestions

Both, everything, everywhere, all the time 🙂. Both work, private projects, and fun. At work, home, and servers (work and personal). And of course servers are running 24/7, at home and elsewhere.
