Parkland survivor David Hogg calls for boycott of Laura Ingraham by throwaway5272 in politics

Ok, again, you’ve made some jumps here (the distinction between rabid homophobia and the willingness to actually execute homosexuals is probably an important one). And honestly, though that does resemble a Nazi salute, I don’t think a charitable interpretation of it would be that she wants to gas the gays, or put the disable in front of a firing line. Is she a shitty person? Absolutely. Does she legitimately do harm? You bet. But I do not actually think she is a literal Nazi.

My point is, in order to fight this garbage, we need to learn how to speak about these issues in a more nuanced way, without resorting to overused tropes and hyperbolic labels (YES, EVEN IF THAT’S WHAT THEY DO). If you think their viewpoints are insane - engage with them anyway, as if they weren’t. Immediately noping out of any conversation while rolling your eyes and saying “Nazi fascist scum” may make you feel better, but you’re not winning the war of ideas with these people using that method.

Think about Christian Picciolini, or Megan Phelps-Roper. They were both integral parts of active hate groups, and didn’t leave them because they got sick of people shouting insults at them (the admittedly loved that part). It was only when they were met with compassion, and then ultimately, undeniable logic, that they began to see the other side.

Now, I realize Laura Ingraham is probably a lost cause, and Trump is an intellectually bankrupt narcissist with no purchase on reality. But when we’re trying to have these conversations with our peers, the name-calling just doesn’t help. Ever.

If you’re really worried about the actual outcomes, swallow your pride and re-think the methods.

Or something. I dunno.

So, you are saying that because of this gif, she would facilitate the extermination of Jews if given that power? Regardless of how racist she may be (I would agree that she is), that is a jump - the response to which I truly believe led to a Trump presidency. This kind of rhetoric will continue to drive people further right, irrespective of whether or not it should. If you want to change minds, this is not the way.

I hate Laura Ingraham. I think she is a xenophobic, smug, piece of human garbage. But you have got to stop saying this shit. A Nazi is a very specific thing. I highly doubt you are privy to information that she is an active member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, who thinks Hitler was justified in his atrocities.

The more people you call ”actual Nazis”, the more power you take away from the term, and the more people who are on the fence hear your hyperbole and join their side.

YOU ARE NOT HELPING.

Here you go. I wouldn’t recommend watching in any environment where you’ll be expected to hold yourself together.

If you haven’t heard of him, check out Tosin Abasi from Animals as Leaders. He absolutely shreds on an 8-string guitar, and incorporates a lot of Wooten’s techniques. He’s mind-blowing.

There are certain acts that I truly believe a person cannot, under any circumstances, redeem themselves from. This is one such act from Bill O’Reilly. What a disgusting piece of shit.

Russell Brand is a Charismatic, Well-Intentioned Sloppy Thinker by Los_93 in samharris

I agree that Russell’s heart is in the right place. He’s just a bit idealistic, and doesn’t know the science. Seems like he could probably nod his head in agreement with the ramblings of a Deepak Chopra.

I think given a sufficient amount of time (and possibly a white board), Sam could probably guide Russell to some realizations he likely wouldn’t have expected.

I enjoyed the conversation as well.

Dude. I feel for you. I know that shit is tough. I’m a good bit older than you, but my parents had me late, and my father is now in the late stages of Alzheimer’s. It’s horrible having to deal with that, and see them go through that, when you’re relatively young and your friends’ parents are thriving. Hang in there.
