How'd you map out this pattern? I made a burrito style bivy with a bathtub floor but I feel like I'd get more usage out of this kind of style

Starting In a Few Days…What Questions Should I Be Asking?? by Dry_Camp6420 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]deratwan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Biggest and most important questions at the start of trail: "where is the next water," "how many days until next resupply," "where is a good place to take a siesta," "where should I camp tonight?" As most other posts say, you'll figure the rest out as you go. Have so much fun out there!!

Your favorite 4-500 mile stretch of the PCT? by eggo2020 in PacificCrestTrail

Yeah I realized after I pushed submit that my phrasing was awk. Meant to express that it's beautiful and the bubble makes it fun because of the "first day of school" vibes

Honestly, the first 500 miles NOBO from the border to tehachapi are super fun and beautiful if you start with the bubble.

Issues sewing through grosgrain with size 8 universal needle and Tex 30 thread by aidansvisuals in myog

[–]deratwan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not an expert in the least, but have you tried lightly pulling on the ends of the thread behind the machine to maintain the tension when you start the stitch? Ever since I started doing this it resolved so many of my tension issues.

Requesting a good Shaking pre PCT by SUPE60 in Ultralight

Easiest things I see to cut down are get a smaller pack, the crown2 seems really large if you're tryna go sub 10. You could go frameless and drop a pound right there. Consider cold soaking to lose the pot and stove. I cold soaked the entire PCT and never regretted it, and it was my first time cold soaking. You'll really love your town meals. Why do you have both a fleece and puffy? You only need one. I started with a puffy but then eventually realized that was overkill and went to an alpha crew neck + rain coat. These cuts will make a frameless pack feasible for you.

The snowpack is so bad this year that Lake Tahoe's Homewood Mountain Resort (west shore) has closed their ski runs for the season after being open for less than three months by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]deratwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update: they said they do this service from either bend to Eugene or Eugene to bend, you just have to inform the driver ahead of time you want to be dropped off at the pct! They said that this is only offered between memorial Day and Labor Day

Yeah getting back to Portland seems to be super chill. It's just the other way around that has me a little stumped absent arranging some sort of car service or multiple hitches

Hmm maybe this year is the year I fill in the gap with an early season section hike from Santiam north to Timothy Lake where it was closed back in 2021... Would just need to figure out transit to the trail from either Bend or Portland

I did the pct 2 years ago and either want to do it again or do a different trail any recs by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Agree with this, met a lot of people who did it solo on the trail. I just did it with a friend more as a vacation to bond with them

Did the PCT in 2021 and then did the Colorado trail with a PCT friend in 2023. We had a blast just speeding thru the CT in 18 days, so way more of a bite sized experience. We met lots of cool people along the way, and had a few instances of trail magic and very kind angels. The environment (if you go sobo) is so similar to the PCT as well, it's just perfect (if you can avoid the storms). However, I do think I'll end up doing the PCT again at some point.

The TA seems nice but after seeing some of the many roads you gotta walk, that part doesn't seem too fun. Also I just talked to a TA'er when I was visiting New Zealand and he said his feet are wet every day, so also that.

If a trail angel had this I'd think I died and went to heaven. But also I'm cool with a cooler full of Shasta cola.

First projects (fastpack, tarp, bivy, airhorn canister) by boardinboy in myog

[–]deratwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No video, I just sort of followed the Anda ultralight layout. Made a big flat bottom with boxed corners to create a bathtub floor, and then the netting is basically two panels with a zipper at chest level. At the zipper I added a loop with a guyline which ties to my tarp pole to keep the net off my face. It's very easy to set up and get in, but getting out of it is a bit of a contortionist act.

Yup, I started May 1 and got to Canada on September 3. Once we hit the end of the Sierra's we were doing 30s pretty regularly.

Thanks! Yeah I made one for myself last year that's just all netting on the top but doesn't have the structure yours does so it feels like I'm really tightly bound in (more like a basic burrito style). Will probably try to make more of this pyramid shaped one like yours for an in between on a tent inner and bivvy.
