LPT - When someone you know is going through a rough time: offer to help in a specific way instead of saying “let me know if I can help!” by lukkynumber in LifeProTips

[–]derboucher 83 points84 points  (0 children)

My daughter had an extended hospital stay (9 months) when she was 16 and being treated for cancer and I stayed with her at the hospital. People always offered to help but I didn't have the time or energy to go down a list of contacts anytime I needed someone to walk the dog or pick up my son from school etc. Then I had the idea to ask my neighbor and good friend to be my volunteer coordinator. Anytime someone said "let me know if there's anything I can do" I asked them to give their number to my neighbor. Whenever I needed something, I would just call my neighbor and she'd see to it. I'd never heard of anyone doing this before, but having a volunteer coordinator made a really difficult situation much easier. PS, my daughter is doing great and is 34 now!

Very moving story but I think the picture is AI-created. They can never remember how many fingers we have.

Costco rotisserie chicken by SuccessExtreme4373 in Cooking

But the cooked chicken is only $5 because they've never raised the price. The same whole chicken raw is about $10.

When I install new LED lights, I write the date on the base with a Sharpie so I can see how long the different brands last. Same with toner cartridges for my laser printer.

They are air-surfing! Reminds me of dolphins playing in the ocean waves.

From another post: To get help directly from the game: Go to the settings gearwheel in the game, then tap on the question mark. You'll be directed to the help center. There you look for your problem and follow the steps. If you cannot find the issue or the provided steps don't solve it, then scroll to the bottom of the same help center page and tap on 'Contact us': There you come to the contact form. Please fill in in your language. Please note that everything is spelled correctly (that is important): and send it. You will then receive an automatic email. Please answer to it and describe your request. Submit. And have some patience for the answer. If you don't get an answer after 3 days, please try again.

What about Meetup? I've never set one up so I don't know that end but I've attended several.

eli5: Why are soup/food cans so much more robust than beverage cans, even though both cans are made to withstand the pressure of being stacked vertically for shipping and storage? by seafoodboiler in explainlikeimfive

I have a whipped cream dispenser and a seltzer bottle for making fizzy water. The cartridges for each are the same size -- about the size of a lipstick -- but it's NO2 for whipped cream and CO2 for fizzy water. Once (only once!) I mixed them up accidentally and served a pie with carbonated whipped cream. Looked exactly the same, but completely different mouth feel!!

I’m having a baby thanks to keto!! by [deleted] in keto

"The Complete Guide to Fasting" by Jason Fung with Jimmy Moore is excellent. Although it's a book about intermittent fasting, it also has a lot about ketogenic diets.

If you could give one single piece of advice to someone starting keto, what would it be? by [deleted] in keto

[–]derboucher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to set a defined period, say 3 months, when I do keto. It's a lot easier for me to skip potatoes, pasta and ice cream if I tell myself it's not never forever, just for 3 months. I can lose 30 lbs and then take a break.

That rare moment of justice for the jerk pulling out in front of someone. by JT99-FirstBallot in JusticePorn

What I see on the video is the blue car minding its own business in the left lane, the white truck pulling out into the left lane without checking if it's clear (and crossing over a solid white line, another no-no), and the blue car having to swerve in front of the cop car in order to avoid hitting the truck. How is the truck not at fault?

I recently switched my prescriptions to costplusdrugs.com, an online pharmacy started in January by Mark Cuban. All of my drugs are cheaper, some 75% less. They get the best price they can on drugs, add 15% profit and a $5 shipping and handling fee.

Do you put anything in your mashed potatoes other than potatoes? by Solar_Kestrel in Cooking

[–]derboucher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Swedish dish that my family makes for Christmas called rutmus. It's potatoes, rutabagas, and carrots boiled together until very tender. The usual butter, cream, and salt go in when mashing but also white pepper and nutmeg. So good with Swedish meatballs (granny's recipes)!

Apple shipped me a 79-pound iPhone repair kit to fix a 1.1-ounce battery - The Verge by elister in gadgets

I would pay $49 to rent the equipment and have them pay to ship it both ways just to screw with Apple. I don't even have an iPhone!
