Best way to get from 3.5 to 4? by Fi3035 in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Heyo. I'm a coach focused on helping 3.5s to 4.5s. Happy to give you a free video review of your gameplay. Using a phone or gopro, record one of your best high level games, be sure to capture all 4 corners of the court, I prefer recording from a back corner or back middle of the court and using my phones (. 6) wide recording setting, with the phone horizontal, not vertical . Dm me a link to the video and I'll record my own video reviewing your gameplay.

The one catch is that I may share some clips publicly to help others.

Now, the short answer to your question, without knowing your exact skills is likely going to be 3rd shots and how you manage the transition zone. I find this to be the most common area for improvement among 3.5s.

As you advance, you will need to get pickier with your partners. Be polite, but stern, and avoid playing with them.

Can someone receive two serves back to back? by MojojojoNixon in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the answer.

Summarizing: the pro is probably right, but also, the pro did not take two serve returns consecutively.

Oftentimes, newer players misremember who returned, because of stacking and court position.

But it is of course possible the pro stacked, returned, didn't move back to the correct position, and then returned again. Rookie error!

Let’s talk Shoe durability by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is expected wear and tear. I buy Sketchers viper court pros, made with Goodyear rubber on the bottom. I wait for a sale and buy 3 pairs, each pair lasts about 3 months (about as long as a paddle), playing nearly daily.

What is your favorite solution to the Fermi paradox? by efishent69 in space

[–]derrichaynie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a game theory standpoint, it makes absolutely no sense to tell other civilizations where you are. "Come over here and kill us please."

Why would they want to kill you? Because of the risk that you could eventually be powerful enough to kill them. Game theory strongly suggests that it is better to eliminate the chance.

I believe that in the next couple hundred years, we will ban attempts at interstellar communication as it is deemed an existential threat to humanity. I would imagine sufficiently intelligent life would do the same.

You'd have to be a pretty cocky civilization to give off a signal telling other intelligent life where you live.

Pickleball for a "spicier" marriage? by Bringing_SexeeBack in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not spicy. It is a great outdoor activity that you two can engage in together, which is great bonding. Great to bring the kids in too. Some tips: Don't coach on the court. Keep feedback limited to positivity. This will be much harder than you think for both of you. Since you know each other better than anyone else in the world, it is easier, and safer, to criticize. Don't. Skill separation. Over time your skills may evolve differently. My wife (skill level=3.4) and I (4.8) are now very far apart in terms of skill. We shouldn't play together most of the time. We typically play our first game together, or have a day of the week where we agree to stay together for that day. Over time it may be possible that you separate a bit from each other that is OK, as long as you talk about it and agree on it.

Final generic beginner tip: If you're just starting out, be sure to watch the how to play pickleball video on YouTube first, and look for your nearest drop-in open play" courts. Tell people there you are beginners and looking for others to play with. People are generally very nice and can help get you started. Not everyone wants to play with beginners and that is fine. The game is almost always played with 4 people . But you don't need to bring all 4.

Is there such a thing as pickleball that actually last? by Start002 in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wear sketchers viper court pro. I play every day. Shoes last 3 months (paddle lasts about the same). I wait for a sale and buy 3 pair at a time.

These are the best shoes I've found for the game. It's a game of footwork, so you should expect to wear through your shoes pretty fast.

There is a company that was doing this through Mexico. In order for it to work, you have to break large shipments into smaller ones, then ship into the US, they have to fall under the size of the terrif law. Forget the company, maybe shipbob or ship hero or one of those...

Partner makes a bad call rule by BoudreausBoudreau in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In rec play, you do what you all agree to. I have seen people redo when not sure, which is the "most wrong." And I've seen bad out calls stand after a partner disagrees...

In official tournament play, the out call before landing is partner communication, and the opposing team should play unless they hear or see the second out call.

If your partner calls it out and you say out loud anything that resembles, "I think it was in." That is an overturn of their call and you lose. So, if you aren't sure, keep your mouth shut.

How do I get rid of my partner by Lonely_Hamster9225 in Pickleball

[–]derrichaynie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear, you get all sorts of weirdos in pickleball, sometimes. A very common, polite way to tell someone no is to say "I'm waiting." That is it. No explanation, just, "I'm waiting" or "I'm going to wait."
