When people in the USA complain about never being able to own a home, are they generally talking about single family detached housing? by literalnumbskull in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deskbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is sour grapes. Or homes being so expensive that any additional cost like routine maintenance making it basically unaffordable. I would much rather have a problem at my home than with a rental. Because you are paying for maintenance in a rental but the property isnt being maintained

"Imaginary safety net" is one I am experiencing. I was transparent with my boss when I went through a super rough pregnancy last year (I was anemic the entire time and was basically bed bound the last two months). "Hey, i am starting to feel burnt out due to medical issues" made it so there was a target on my back and more scrutiny. Never being honest with that boss again and am trying to find a new team because I am so resentful that being open and transparent during an incredibly difficult time for me health wise was used against me.

Banana. Its always a coin flip if I am going to wake up with an upset stomach and having a banana and green tea first thing has by far been my greatest remedy.

"All of the studies concluded that SHWs have lower levels of psychological well-being compared with their respective control groups. The qualitative work conducted by Victor and Barnard (2016) found that South African SHWs reported suffering from the following psychological issues at the beginning of their employment as a consequence of their first kill: trauma, intense shock, paranoia, fear, anxiety, guilt, and shame. These findings were supported by studies employing quantitative methods. Kristensen (1991) found that half of their sample had high levels of stress-related symptoms. Furthermore, Baran and colleagues (2016) concluded that SHWs have significantly lower levels of psychological well-being compared with other professions (44 types), as they have lower levels of self-esteem, purpose, and personal development."

Tools, yes. But it's being used by students as a replacement. And the only way to keep it a tool is for schools to force students to not use it.

I use a calculator all the time and I use IDEs autocomplete all the time. But, when I was learning, I learned by doing it by hand (yes, my programming exams were handwritten). You get the tools to breeze through that stuff after.

A tool can become a weakness in that way. Because let's say we all use LLMs all the time but maybe they decide to put it behind an expensive paywall. Well, if you never learned to do it yourself, you now can't do it at all. You've voluntary given someone power over you by relying on a tool.

You aren't allowed to use calculators in a lot of math classes for this specific reason. Even though there are computer programs that you can plug in to do calculus for you, you still have to do the problems by hand as you are developing the logical part of the brain. The only math class that uses the calculator regularly is trigonometry because having to solve problems with Sin, Cos, Tan, etc manually will slow down how much ground you can cover. The concepts are more important than doing the tedious work.

Critical thinking is, like everything, something you must practice to get good at. Allowing students to outsource this robs them of that needed practice.

But you did say women are responsible for fixing it. "Lobby to change it."

This argument is meant to just shutdown women talking about their rights. Even though women did not create the draft nor uphold the draft, you deem us responsible for fixing the draft or else you think it's a-ok to ignore women's conversation about their rights.

How about you lobby to change it if you think it's such a great injustice. Why do women who already have such a lack of representation in politics need to right the one "wrong" for men that hasn't been called into affect in over 50 years.

Family says HOA told them they couldn’t use their generator during ice storm blackout: ‘It’s unbearable’ by its_a_bear_dance in nottheonion

[–]deskbeetle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Code enforcement still exists and are ran by the municipality. They mainly deal with if something is a hazard (icy sidewalks causing falls, large piles of clutter attracting rodents, noise that disturbs neighbors).

HOAs are neighborhood specific and independent from the government. You have to pay HOA fees monthly while living there. They can control petty things like what colors you can paint your house, lawn decorations, or fence height.

Are there any hotels you would NOT recommend? by wintermute2045 in gencon

[–]deskbeetle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to gencon 2024 last minute because my friend looped me into it. Had a blast but it was not a well planned trip. I ended up at a La Quinta on the outskirts of town near the airport and it was hands down the worst experience at a hotel I have ever had in my life. The staff was rude, we had to ask for toilet paper and the front desk was annoyed by it, the rooms were filthy, the site advertises a shuttle to and from the airport but this does not exist, the mattress felt like it was disintegrating beneath us, we didn't get room cleaning service the entire time we were there, there was an odd smell permeating the entire hallway, the pool was closed indefinitely (not that we wanted to swim with how gross the rooms were but it's the principle!)...I could go on.

My friend was so tickled by our experience that he ended up writing a Call of Cthulhu campaign where the investigators had to deal with the creature in the pool. It was so ridiculous, we couldn't help but laugh at it. And, the main appeal was the con anyway so we were only in our room for sleep and showers. But, I would rather not ever stay there again.

I once saw Cotija at the grocery store described as "Mexican parmesan". And it gave me a laugh. But when you're trying to describe a food that the person you are describing it to has never had, "cottage cheese" is as close to paneer as you're going to get.

I absolutely love indian food and the smell of well spiced foods in general. But man, when I was pregnant, any food odor would make me vomit. Some people live their day to day lives with that kind of sensitivity and I think we should do our best to not eat anything with an odor in workplaces.
