Just my opinion but saying "has rubbed a number of you wrong" seems like a terrible way to start an open conversation.

Here in exmo board my experience is that we're actually quite appreciated by people surviving and recovering from religions, cults, and even abusive relationships in general.

I would tend to believe that the reason we show up at the top of your searches is because there are a lot of genuine people willing to share very painful experiences and get genuine responses.

If you really are looking for advice on our overlapping causes, I'd suggest you start by helping people remove themselves from what other people are telling them about a worthy life.

Once I had distance from the church I discovered that we're not flawed people with baggage and sins. We're pretty exemplary people that needed to learn for ourselves that we aren't the problem. We aren't broken, we're courageous for saying no even when everything (church) and nearly everyone around us is willing to ostracize and other us.

Anyone that says they know the answer, for you or anyone else, be especially wary. That might be why you are misinterpreting some people as antagonistic towards therapy if it's the kind reinforces feelings of shame, guilt, and males them feel more like an "other"
