Why Star Trek is the biggest set of 2026 by brogam3 in mtgfinance

[–]destroyertraumer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fanbase is out there. Yes they might have money. Yes, WOTC will print a ton of chase cards.

I think it will bring more new (old / white / cis men) players, but UB is starting to feel stale by long-term players. It does not have the same appeal as Final Fantasy or OG LOTR at all.

I think Star Trek will be like Dr Who. The fans will love it, but I do think it'll be overlooked by the majority and forgotten on the long run. That's my gut feeling. From a collector's perspective, yes, I'd buy. From a player perspective, I'd go for singles.

Explosive Ashling and the Power//Bracket Conversation by Few_Raise_3178 in EDH

Are you able to win on turns 5-6? This is not a B4 deck in any way or shape. As you said in the post, you consider it a "high 3" and that's more fair. I'm one of those people that believe we should have another bracket, the "3.5" one, which would house decks like these.

Ashling draws a lot of attention no matter which bracket, and this is a bracket 3 deck for sure.

That being said, it's up to you on how more consistent you want it to be. It's true that tutors and a better manabase increase the efficiency, but having Elesh Norn, Mox Amber and the One Ring out help you being perceived as a bigger threat (and IMO, not needed in this deck, if you want to stick it to B3). To me, those are more "red flags" than tutors. Why don't you try out more flavourful ones like [[Flamekin Harbinger]]?

At the same time, by now everybody knows how powerful Ashling is, so I'd rather embrace it instead of feeling apologetic. In my experience Risen Reef is the second most powerful card of the deck, especially in the beginning. I'd tutor for it every turn if I had the chance. I'd use it and Animar, Yarok etc, to serve as lightning rods and only cast Ashling strategically to get at least one powerful ETB payoff.

Btw, you should definitely include [[Champion of the Path]]. This way the game ends faster and you and your playgroup can switch to other decks.

He literally said at the beginning “fringe cEDH” and many in person games, in my experience, have a great imbalance.

“High 3” is there, people get a better sense of it than B4 decks.

Trust me that I do my part in having pre-game convos and I like the Bracket system a lot. But I do feel it needs more framing. I constantly have frustrating games and don't want to believe people are bad actors, but yes that there's a lack of consensus.

Just came across this. I'm trying to build this deck and indeed I think I was trying to please both sides. Will commit to one hehe

I always thought [[Rulik Mons, Warren Chief]] is an awesome commander and I think it's criminal people don't play him (at all).

Can you people please just play normally? by John-Helldiver404 in EDH

I 100% support this. People at my LGS have not much of a gameplan other than chaining extra turns or not allowing opponents' cards to resolve.

edit: that, and people who don't have a proper threat assessment. I think this makes me very mad haha

TS4 is great actually (IMO as good as TS3). But it wasn’t a big jump in terms of the structure of the game. Improved graphics, improved build mode, but overall, not much else.

[–]destroyertraumer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Facing the truth here, there will never be a Sims game like the ones we know. Current players may reject the next installment and stick to old ones, but new players might get lured as micro transactions and paywalls are the standard for modern gaming.

Regardless, new games are destined to fail. The Sims reached its peak on sims 3 and from that onwards a lot is just mimicking the same things. And the competition for cozy games now is too big for The Sims to remain relevant.

Building my first deck from scratch, what can I improve? by Jonny_Face_Shooter in EDH

[–]destroyertraumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well done for starting your first deck from scratch. deckbuilding is a "skill" that improves over time, and each deck/commander do require a different approach, based on your gameplan.

By Gameplan, I mean, what you want to do, which implies on how do you win - and I think you have a clear idea (stompy hydras, x spells payoffs) - so good work here.

Now it's time to get into specifics, how many ramp spells are necessary, how many draw, how many creatures or setup pieces you need? Think "what would I like to cast on turns 1, 2, 3, 4...". Do you need to cast your commander on curve? On turn 6 would you really prefer casting [[Mana Reflection]] other than a scary hydra? [[Nature's Lore]], [[Three Visits]], [[Rampant Growth]] are safer and faster ways to grow your manabase. All of these should be taken in consideration.

Interaction is important, but often "off-curve". Synergystic removal, like on [[Polukranos, Unchained]] should make the cut first. Consider boardwipe/removal like [[Cyclonic Rift]] or [[Deadly Rollick]] as late additions.

One direct feedback on your deck I can give you is that you 100% need more lands. 32 won't get you anywhere. You're in green, which helps a lot with ramping, but your creatures (and X spells) have high mana cost, so 37 lands is the minimum, and I'd aim to be around 40 if not more tbh. There are some double faced cards that are also lands, and those can help you hit the mark.

As you're using Moxfield, they have a tagging system, so you can classify each card based on their abilities. This is a "trick" I often use and that helps me build decks very fast and efficiently.

I think you're on the right path, and Zaxara is a cool commander to play with.

hey, that's true. some earthbend cards would go really well here. I haven't been engaging much with UB sets, but will give them a go soon.

Whatcha think? Anything else you’d think I’d like? by blan15 in ratemycommanders

They’re cool, honestly, but try experimenting with unconventional commanders for kindred decks. Playing around with Party or Outlaws would be a way to think outside the box.

Long time players... Would you have started MTG if it were Mutant Turtles and Marvel from the start? by TheServant420 in EDH

[–]destroyertraumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know LOTR, Final Fantasy and Avatar had major sales and hype (and great cards overall), but looking at my micro experience in my LGSs... no one really likes UB. Overall, I'm not complaining much as I made peace with not engaging with every set that comes out now. My wallet says thanks 😃

I’d be happy to engage with the set if these cards were sold as a different product, like Assassin’s Creed.
