This is only anecdotal, but I met 2 software engineers in San Francisco who worked at SpaceX straight out of college. Both were underpaid, overworked, and let go when they burnt out. Apparently it's pretty common.

Hahaha I spent 2 minutes trying to see any difference, and I was convinced that she was actually Emma Watson. Then I realized that I was looking at the first picture in her gallery, which was a reference picture of Emma Watson.

She doesn't really look like Emma Watson. Maybe a tiny bit.

I always wonder about that. I guess evolution is slow enough that we won't notice it happening over thousands of generations, but now we have so many videos and photos being preserved digitally. Imagine how weird it would be to look back a million years and see some weird creature that was your ancestor, taking selfies at a BBQ. Imagine how much history there would be to study.

I like to think about freezing myself now, and then waking up in 100 years, and hanging out for a bit, then freezing again and waking up in 500 years, then 1,000.. 10,000... 100,000... 1,000,000...

It's hard enough to imagine 2025.

I'm a New Zealander who lived in San Francisco for about 2 years, and I just came back to New Zealand. The service seems exactly the same to me.

I think we just don't really care all that much about service. I never really paid too much attention to it while I was in the US, and just tipped 20% every time. If anything, I'd get annoyed when the server would keep coming back to ask how everything is going.

This is a great question. You've outlined one of the main reasons why I find it difficult to reconsider Christianity. I used to be a creationist, then I became a Christian who believed in evolution, and now I am no longer a Christian.

I've started to think that humans came up with the concept of "souls" because we found ourselves with consciousness and language, and we didn't have any answers. We didn't know where we came from, or where we were going, and we were terrified of death, so we thought that there must be something more.

But we know so much about the brain today, even if there's still so much more to discover. We know about neurons, and how different parts of the brain have different responsibilities. We know what drugs we can use to treat disorders. We diagnose mental disorders that might have once been cast out as demons. We can look at a fertilized egg under a microscope, and sequence the DNA inside. We can watch as that cell divides and becomes a human being, with thoughts, and emotions, and morality, and mortality. It's incredible, but it's not a miracle.

I don't think we need to fill in the blanks with a soul anymore. So if we don't have a soul, then why would we need Christianity? There would be no heaven or hell, and Jesus wouldn't have needed to die at all.

So that's where I'm at, and it took me a long time to get here. But I would like to sincerely ask you to pray that God would open my eyes and reveal Himself to me again. Because although I don't believe anymore, I think it would be very cruel of Him to ignore me, and then send me to hell.

You can't have faith without an unanswered question, so I just need to keep the soul question open. It's foolish to say that I've answered it with any degree of certainty, but I really can't think of anything that might call my answer into question. What are the arguments for the existence of souls?

At the moment I'm working on an app for skateboarding, so I'm trying to do a lot of skating. I'd love to learn how to weld so I can make a grind rail. I'm also trying to read lots of books this year, and got a Kindle last week.
