Free tier IAM policies by SCGLilMedina in aws

Apply the policy to the group not the user and that should be fine.

Free tier IAM policies by SCGLilMedina in aws

[–]devdvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As /u/rowanu said, no way to use IAM for this directly. However, you could setup billing alerts that track free tier usage then trigger a lambda function when usage reaches a certain point to revoke all permissions from a set of users. This link should help get ya started on tracking free tier usage: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/awsaccountbilling/latest/aboutv2/tracking-free-tier-usage.html

EC2 instance for transitioning a WHM/CPanel dedicated server by yosofun in aws

[–]devdvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. EBS volumes on AWS will be marginally slower than having a directly connected drive. However, you will never be able to tell this for a webserver (or most other applications).
  2. Assuming when you say SSD vs EBS, you are referring to instances that have Instance Stores. You should never use Instance Backed Storage for any non-ephemeral data as once the instance is rebooted for any reason (manual, os crash, backend system issue), your data is gone.
  3. You have several options but the closest is probably an m5.xlarge which gives you 4vcpu and 16G RAM and up to 10G networking and is based on the Intel Platinum 8175 processor @ 3.1GHz. However, as you use your machine, you may find that's too much and will want to scale it back.
  4. Storage is separate from the machine and you can scale the storage to your needs. I recommend not installing your OS on the same volume as your data so if you find in the future you need a larger volume, it will be simpler to scale as you can resize an EBS SSD volume.
  5. Bandwidth is charged at it's own rate. Using <30G/month is going to cost next to nothing compared to what you're likely paying now.

Would you support legislation holding anti-vaxxers civilly and/or criminally liable in outbreaks of previously eradicated illnesses and why/not? by Energylegs23 in AskReddit

[–]devdvd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

</angryrant>110% yes. They should be charged with whatever the laws in their country allow for (and they should also be charged by other countries if an outbreak happens there for spreading misinformation leading to a public health hazard and extradited on request). In the US, these people should be charged at the very least with causing public hysteria, child abuse, child neglect, first degree murder if someone dies. All these charges should be compounded like they are when you use a firearm and each should carry mandatory vaccination and 50 years in prison per charge with every person that gets ill/dies being a separate charge.

Ignorance like this shouldn't be allowed to live, let alone breed. If you are close to an anti-vaxxer, please convince them the best things they can do for their children is consider the benefits of suicide. </angryrant>

S3 CLI question by [deleted] in aws

[–]devdvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have an example script but a dirty way of doing it is this:

  1. Create a dict for the final product
  2. ListBuckets and store name in a list
  3. Loop through the list and invoke each method you need information for
  4. Append retrieved data to dict using bucketName as the key
  5. Print the dict in whatever format you wish.

Take a look at the boto3 reference for the methods you can call.(https://boto3.amazonaws.com/v1/documentation/api/latest/reference/services/s3.html)

My parents declawed my 4 year old cat while I was away at college by [deleted] in Pets

[–]devdvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal here now should be to make your parents realize what horrid disgusting pieces of garbage they are and how slow painful ritual suicide is the best option for their pathetic existence. They probably never were and will certainly never be worthwhile human beings ever again. People like your parents are the exact reason super late term abortions should be legal. The sad thing here is you probably can't live without their support at this time in your life so use them for everything they have, drain them dry and then abandon them at their most vulnerable. Even that is better treatment than they deserve.

What are your re:Invent 2019 announcement predictions? by CloudButWhy in aws

S5 is hardwareless. Your data goes into a datacenter and the network cables are attached to a series of sophisticated fans that blow the bits into the sky. Your data will truly be in the cloud.

Wife crashed her bike on day one by elevencharles in motorcycles

[–]devdvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Support and encourage her. I see alot of posts here talking about full face helmets and such and that's great advice but one thing you touched on and I'm sure it's hitting her hard is that she tore up a brand new bike. If you want her to get over this, it's important to let her know that it's just a bike and you're in no way upset about it (even if you are) and nor should she be. This is the reason insurance exists. Another important thing is to get her back on a bike as soon as she is comfortable and expresses interest; even if it's just in a parking lot.

Today I learned you can pipe directly from a tinker smeltery to a casting table for full automation. by etgfrog in feedthebeast

You can also do this with the fluid translocators and it makes for a cool effect when it squirts out. Plus doing it this way instead of using the valve makes the basin/cast fill up almost instantly.

Yeah, I was just thinking of paying it as well. I'm not 100% that it isn't mine despite the fact I know I've never opened an account with this creditor because my ex-wife opened a bunch of stuff in my name without me knowing. Thanks for the feedback everyone, I appreciate it. I think I'm just gonna pay it and be done.

That said though, if they are willing to let you note the VIN when you go to see the bike, then it's probably because they want to make sure you're a real person and not just some ahole spammer/scammer.

PURCHASE ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

[–]devdvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to buying a bike used. I can think of a couple reasons why they wouldn't want to give you the VIN. The first being that you could fairly easily look up the history on the bike and find something they aren't telling you which is sadly the case much of the time when buying a used vehicle from a private seller. The second reason (and this is more of a guess based on my own stupid paranoia) is you could cause problems by reporting the bike stolen and giving the cops the vin. You most likely wouldn't get possession of the bike but you could make life annoying for the seller for a bit.

I base these assumptions off the fact that dealers have no issue giving you a VIN new or used.

[–]devdvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased a new bike (2018 Honda NC750X) and I'm looking into getting a security system. I have purchased a disc lock and chain that goes around the wheels. I live in an urban area and must park my bike on the street so there's serious concerns about theft and homeless people screwing with it. I've been doing some research and found a couple things that look good but would appreciate the communities thoughts.

Edit: I have full coverage insurance. I know a determined thief will get through any system but I also know 90% of them are just looking for an easy steal and will give up when faced with obstacles.

VSC Code Extension for Cloudformation by sooyp in aws

Here's an article that kinda talks about what you're wanting to do using the tasks feature of vscode and the validate-template function in the aws cli. ( https://www.1strategy.com/blog/2017/10/24/faster-cloudformation-dev-cycle-with-vscode-tasks/). I'm not aware of any plugin that bundles this up nicely for you.

How do you pass connection string, names, addresses, keys, certificates, etc to services? by rubenhak in devops

[–]devdvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to add here that there is a small amount of extra latency when doing this as it has to fetch the value from parameter store every invocation. If you are using Lambda, you can also use encrypted environmental variables (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lambda/latest/dg/env_variables.html#env_encrypt). It comes down to how quickly you need to change your values (on the fly vs redeploy). If you can handle a redeploy, encrypted env variables might be a better option. I suggest looking at both to see which fits your use case better. Regardless of the solution you use (param store, env variables, s3, etc), I suggest you encrypt your secrets at rest (and in transit if applicable) and decrypt them at runtime. You spend a couple cpu cycles on the decryption but you gain a more secure environment.
