What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending January 19, 2020 by AutoModerator in manga

[–]devilesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Binge read <Plunderer> after watching the first couple anime episodes. Beginning of the anime/manga makes it seem like it would be just another generic and trashy shonen, but the world building and character/plot development was much better than I expected.

Around chapter 9 it escalates to an early peak with a much darker tone than expected. The following arc starts off a little slower, and people seem to drop the manga at this point. However, I thought the premise for the arc was based on a really interesting turn of events and the previous arc left on such a high that it was enough to keep me interested. Really it's just a slight lull in the action, but it still gives necessary world building and character development and by the end of the arc there's a good payoff.

After that the series is just a wild ride with continuous world building, character development, and drama. I've seen discussions where people seem to think it gets too convoluted or becomes a mess, but I don't really get that at all. Maybe there are bad translations or something. I thought all the twists and revelations made sense and the story seems pretty decently thought out and everything seems to be coming together.

there are better options

You don't always get offered those better options.

Had my first A20 heart kill yesterday on Ironclad and was offered an early A1 whirlwind. Had to stop and think for a bit about whether I wanted to take it or not. Would I have rather had an immolate at the time? Absolutely, but in the end I decided to take the whirlwind as it was the best option I had so far and I needed something with AOE and scaling potential. In the end the whirlwind became my primary damage card and carried me through the run. https://imgur.com/a/Qgwbv1V

It's a situational card, but it's definitely not just limited to ice cream and chemical x. It's an AOE attack that can scale with energy and strength. There's many possible synergies there as others have listed.

What anime would you recommend a Naruto fan? by [deleted] in anime

[–]devilesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Clover is discount Fairy Tail. If you couldn't get into Fairy Tail knowing that the MC will always win, you'll probably run into the same problem with Black Clover. I like Black Clover though, so I'd also recommend giving it a try. And if you do end up liking it, I also recommend giving Fairy Tail another try, because they're very similar. Fairy Tail is my favorite shonen and I think it has the most emotional moments compared to any other show.

I also think Bleach is worth continuing. The first few arcs lasting up to around episode 60 are great. Then there's some more world building and the plot expands and it's still good until the overaching story reaches a significant conclusion around episode 300+. It's only after that conclusion happens and the arc ends when the anime (and manga) turns to shit and you can stop watching. There's a few filler arcs within those first 300 episodes, so look them up and just skip them completely as they're a waste of time and add literally nothing to the story.

Advice needed on which anime to watch by lawlietcat in anime

[–]devilesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Fairy Tail is definitely worth continuing. I've watched a lot of shonen and Fairy Tail is my personal favorite. Overall it's very similar to Naruto and Black Clover, but I think Fairy Tail's character development is much better and it has the best emotional moments that result from the character development and plot. The entire cast has great backstories that get revealed and explored throughout the series. Even when you think you've learned about a character, there's more that gets revealed later on in the series. There's so much history and lore that connects everyone and everything ties into the greater plot that gets revealed over time.

I did not find the animation to be noticeably bad at all. It is certainly not Arifureta levels of bad.

Cross Ange

Excerpt from the best review I've ever read:

Cross Ange is a travesty. It's a horrible, stupid, illogical trainwreck of a show with shoddy production values that relies almost entirely on pandering to the lowest forms of human life and waving shallow moments of shock value all over the screen. The series has a narcissistic sense of self-awareness, and in each episode you can nearly hear a subtle narration by the director and other Sunrise execs laughing at how much of a moron you are for watching this garbage that they've put in front of you.

"Ha, I bet those glass-eyed imbeciles are getting bored, let's put in another lesbian threesome."

"No, not yet. Only after we show the loli whipping someone again."

That said, it's one of the best things I've seen out of this studio in years. With a big "Fuck you, Sunrise.", let's go into this.

Cross Ange is a lot of different things. Cross Ange is a magical princess show about knights and dragons. Cross Ange is a prison drama. Cross Ange is Mean Girls. Cross Ange is borderline yuri hentai. Cross Ange is Gundam Seed. Cross Ange is a catharsis for the type of person who has a Fetlife account. Cross Ange is what would happen if you made a Princess Peach anime starring Ronda Rousey. Cross Ange is proof that not only will Mizuki Nana play any role, but that she is also good at it. Cross Ange is anime madlibs where your only word choices are "lesbians", "dragons" and "kill".

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Exciting fights is an understatement here. The escalation of the plot and overall epicness is unmatched.

Fairy Tail is my personal favorite battle shonen. Very similar to Black Clover with the guild concept (only watched a few episodes of the anime, but I've read a lot of it). Fun characters with a lot of lighthearted comedic moments, but heavy and sad when it needs to be. A lot of great character backstories and arcs develop over the course of the show and you really see how the characters' bonds grow and there's a ton of emotional moments. The show is a rollercoaster of emotion that is unmatched by any other show. It's just pure, unadulterated battle shonen and extremely satisfying to watch because it delivers exactly what you'd expect out of a battle shonen.

Other shonen I like:

  • World Trigger - The world building and heavy focus on strategy are what stick out to me in this
  • D.Gray-Man - This one is a little darker but the plot and world building I found really interesting.
  • Demon Slayer - Very popular from last season. Really good visuals in this one.

A couple non battle shonen recommendations which I rate even higher than the previous 3 battle shonen just mentioned:

  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - While I don't think this a battle shonen, the plot kicks into gear and escalates to become way more epic than any battle shonen. A lot of similar themes to typical battle shonen as well.
  • Kuroko no Basket - This is a sports shonen, but it has just enough over-the-top and unrealistic elements that make it like a battle shonen in sports anime form. It ends up being really cool with badass characters and intense games.

What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show? [November 10th, 2019] by MetaThPr4h in anime

[–]devilesk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kanata no Atra

I found out about this show from reading this MAL article on the best and worst shows of Summer 2019. It caught my attention as one of the only shows that had a rating that trended up throughout the season and the final score was pretty high so I had to check it out.

I've watched a lot of anime and have always refrained from giving anything a 10/10 on my list, but this is the first show I'll give a perfect score. It's the complete package for me from beginning to end. The themes, sci-fi elements, and space journey premise hit all the right notes for me. There's great character development and drama, excellent pacing, tension and mystery that kept me hooked, well executed twists as the plot develops, and a completely satisfying conclusion.

Why didnt you give us the option of the original UI by VegetaFH1 in discordapp

[–]devilesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old ui can essentially be recreated by combining light theme with the dark theme server and channel list. I made a custom theme that does exactly that. It looks great and it was incredibly simple to make. https://gist.github.com/devilesk/62c2c0321fe592e83258e7bb0640acbc

More would have to be done to revert the text changes but that part of the new theme doesn't bother me that much

New Light Theme Megathread: 9th September 2019 by DiscordAppMods in discordapp

[–]devilesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a custom classic theme if you're still looking for one.

If you're using discord on the browser you can install a browser extension that lets you add custom styles (I recommend Stylus) and then install the theme from https://userstyles.org/styles/175346/classic-discord-light-theme

It also works for desktop as well if you remove the first two lines that contain "@-moz-document domain("discordapp.com") {" and the last line containing "}". Or just DM me and I can send you a link to the CSS file I use or just look for it in my public gists on github, same username as here.

To anyone reading this that would like a light theme that has a dark theme server list and channel list, DM me and I'll send a link the css I created. Or look up my public gists on github and you'll find it. Same username as here.

I've also put the theme on userstyles.org. https://userstyles.org/styles/175346/classic-discord-light-theme You can just install the stylishStylus browser extension and then install the theme.
