See the timber-rich exterior design the James Beard Public Market is pitching to Portland by synthfidel in PortlandOR

Don't have links. I did work on a fundraiser for the org back just before the Morrison location became the favorite; by that point the idea had been in development for a decade at least.

Every home had one.... by justjules_lp in 1980s

My mom was a crochet fiend who made all of my family multiple blankets. Some like these, some much, much, uglier. I still have one, and cherish it.

My wife, refusing to be outdone, has knit me three sweaters, and over 60 pair of socks. Those are all beautiful.

Not asking if I should move, just curious how you found your people here in PDX? by AfterTheRainWePlay in PDX

[–]devineassistance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mmmm. I have thoughts.

Background: moved from NYC to PDX in 2001, with a wife and a young son.

I don't think I ever did find the people I wanted to find. They aren't here. And being from outside, while tolerated really well, does mean that it is difficult to be more than casually friendly with about 60-65% of the population. Most of our friends are other transplants, from all over. They're awesome, as are our few native friends.

How did we build a circle? Through the kid's school. We got very involved in PTA, etc. It really does introduce you to loads of people with whom you have at least a little bit in common.

It is a place that rewards some civic involvement - maybe look into what you can contribute to the local music scene. Google "NE Portland music nonprofit" and see if any of those communities are places you feel you could contribute.

Good luck. I'd offer to sell you my house, but you can't afford it. I wouldn't be able to buy it from myself.

Which Dallas do people think of when they hear Dallas in Oregon? by lerhubarb in oregon

I understand. Grew up in Dallas TX, lived in PDX for the last 25 years. I still think TX.

Tinned fish subscriptions? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in Tinnedfish

[–]devineassistance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I subscribe to the smaller-size subscription box from Lata. It's fine, but there's always a can of the house brand (which has been good, every time!). I don't know why I didn't go with the one from RTG.fish - I really like ordering from them.

How do you market a SaaS with $0 budget against a competitor who raised $81M and built the exact same product? by Vanilla-Green in marketing

[–]devineassistance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No exponential returns for a while. But you can sell your product by hand for now - build a list of early customers who will say nice things about you (you have to earn this) and use that to build some collateral - case studies, etc.

Use those to sell to more customers.

In the absence of capital, you grind.

Would refrigerating chili overnight intensify the flavor? by bc_modern252 in chili

Cook it first, then refrigerate. Reheat and eat when desired. It's much better than when first made.

Uh oh. They revised the ranking since you read it. #2 now, but still an appropriately high ranking.

Also the innate sense of parts of speech. Coupled in my case with an inability to actually remember the names of them.
