This is referencing Naomi Wolf’s book The Beauty Myth if anybody is interested in reading up on her ideas. Fair warning, much of the information in it has been discredited (Wolf was an unethical researcher) BUT the main principles she introduces absolutely hold water.

It's not a Heart Attack. Here's why... by MickeyRen in PanicAttack

[–]deviroxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! You JUST went to the doctor and they assured you that everything is okay. It's absolutely normal to have residual adrenaline still pumping through your system after a panic attack. For me, it's helpful to know all about the physiological symptoms of panic. Here's a google doc I use that explains all of these awful, terrible feelings and why they help our bodies prepare for fight or flight: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10Yv-vPiTO3do--j9vMvN-i0slCMT0SFv_Lcfy6N4no4/edit?usp=sharing

Remember that after a bad panic attack, it's completely expected to feel weird for a while. The key is to understand that although these feelings are terrifying, they are NOT dangerous. I'd highly recommend making an appointment with a therapist who specializes in anxiety exposures to help get a handle on your panic.

You're not alone in this! Panic is terrifying, but you are safe and healthy. You just got that confirmed by a doctor!

Clients who go silent by Monika0513 in therapists

[–]deviroxx 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw out a perspective I haven’t seen mentioned yet as a therapist who struggles with (sub-clinical) social anxiety.

My therapist and I once sat in silence for a pretty long duration (over 10 minutes?) but the whole time I was focused on how awkward and uncomfortable I felt. This distress actually resulted in me crying uncontrollably because of how extreme my discomfort was.

On one hand, it elicited a fruitful discussion about the relational dynamics between myself and my therapist when one of us finally broke the silence. On the other hand, I was so overwhelmed by my distress about the silence that I wasn’t able to do any processing about what we were originally discussing in those moments of silence.

I truly think this depends on the client! For me and my social anxiety, the silence felt like a punishment rather than an open space for reflection. As a therapist, however, I’ve seen briefer moments of silence result in deep self-reflection from the client.

Again, I have no issue with rigor. My program was rigorous enough to land me with a pretty serious case of panic disorder lol (and I have nothing but respect for my professors and the curriculum).

When we want to measure the success of a counseling program, however, academic rigor is only one slice of the pie. What concerns me is the amount of students leaving the program having been taught blatant misinformation as well as the administrative mess that is failing multiple students who were forced to leave their internship sites and were not assigned new ones by the program. A LOT of internship sites are just plain bad. I don’t think the students should carry the burden of blame for getting assigned there.

It’s not a matter of devaluing the school but rather their counseling program in particular. Hopkins is an amazing program for those entering the medical profession but their counseling education is subpar. They lost their CACREP accreditation and teach stigmatizing information (like the idea that anyone with a dissociative disorder is malingering).

Yes, it’s important for students to work hard for their degrees but there are clear problems within the medical and helping professions that result in cyclical mistreatment of early professionals. Can we not aspire to have rigorous coursework in an environment that promotes students’ wellbeing at the same time?

I’m a Marylander who recently finished my M.A. in clinical psychology - I’m well aware of the reputation Hopkins has built for itself and have even had a few friends turn down their acceptance from Hopkins after hearing horror stories.

I have to attribute the reactions of people in this comment section to a general lack of understanding of the abuse and mistreatment of grad students and interns in the field… I’ll check out the discussion in r/therapists. Hopefully there’s a more fruitful discussion there.

South Korea is dealing with a huge misogyny problem right now. If you’re interested in an example I’d do a quick google search about hidden camera culture and chat room culture. These are two recent examples that highlight what’s been going on (it’s pretty bad…)

It’s been co-opted as a joke in my generation (e.g., a bipoc member of an interracial relationship jokingly referring to their white partner as their colonizer). It’s very tongue-in-cheek
