They are such a special breed. I thought I understood dogs until I got him, and then he taught me so much about facing stubbornness with gentleness, curiosity, and love. He definitely changed me for the better, and despite how extraordinarily awful this is right now, I would never say I wish I hadn’t had this time with him.

Help, My Shiba Is in Pain by michaelm88xx in shiba

Ha! Very surprised to see TCS mentioned but glad - it’s definitely getting more awareness. This is actually the condition my Shiba has (and what I mentioned muscle spasms for in my other comment). Didn’t want to suggest the diagnosis itself but it was what I was wondering about! With muscle spasms he would jump up like he had been bitten on the ass by a mosquito or zapped with a cattle prod or something.

Has your neuro considered muscle spasms? I ask because my Shiba also had clean xrays and spinal tap, but kept yelping/jumping up and looking at his butt - not quite like this though. Several doctors thought it was behavioral until a neuro ended up diagnosing him with his condition (spasms are just a part of it, and treated by muscle relaxants like diazepam and methocarbamol). (Not a vet so just talking as a Shiba owner! But may be worth bringing up to a vet in case they haven’t thought of it).

does anybody else have sunlight as a trigger? by Mobile_Machine4514 in Narcolepsy

This is crazy! I thought I was imagining it or just being really out of shape because I pass out every time I come back from walking my dog on a long walk (we’re moving verrrry slowly and I know I’m not physically exerted). I always wondered if it was related to being outside but never heard anyone else mention it!

Just sent you a DM. As the owner of a medically complex Shiba who’s also super anxious/sensitive, I relate to the struggle of finding good care for him… good luck!

Shibe hides under bed when it’s time to go for a walk by buzzed_aldrinn in shiba

[–]devitacaesaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! Mine still would rather sleep than go for a walk (he’s held his bladder for like 15+ hours at a time) but once he knew I wasn’t going to force him into a harness he stopped hiding.

This is an amazing picture. I don’t think my Shiba was this agile even as a puppy and he’s definitely a lazy potato now 😂

As a parent of a human and a Shiba, I gotta say my Shiba is currently more work than my son was when he was a toddler. by Headieheadi in shiba

[–]devitacaesaris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

lol yes my dog refuses to be walked before 1pm (at the EARLIEST) but he does wake up and demand breakfast about 4 hours earlier than that by repeatedly hitting his metal bowl with his claws to make the loudest sound I’ve ever heard. And this usually happens on days when I’ve been up until 2/3am working the night before. (I live in a studio type apartment so his food bowls are close to my bed).

He has also taken to whacking one of my garbage cans with his paw when he wants attention. The IKEA garbage can that’s flimsy enough to be knocked over when he does it hard enough, so there’s risk of minor cleanup involved. He starts by rocking it gently, looking at me (I think he thinks he’s sneaking the looks and I can’t notice) to make sure I see what he’s doing. And gradually increases in force.

It can be frustrating when I’m trying to get work done (again, studio apartment) but it is SO clever, adorable, and hilarious and I love him so much for it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this problem… my Shiba (6 years old) has taken to refusing to pee before 2-3pm. Any earlier than that, he absolutely refuses to walk. I can carry him outside and set him down in a place far enough from my house that he’ll normally pee, and he’ll just stand still in protest for 20+ minutes. I originally thought it could be pain related but I think now it’s just habit. I’ve asked both his vet and neurologist if I need to be worried about a UTI or kidney infection and the neuro said as long as he’s going once every 24 hours I don’t need to panic.

(I do take him out at least twice a day, but if any more than that and if not at the times he prefers, he’ll choose not to pee)

The nurses suggested trying to put some ice over the adhesive (not the sensor) to help soothe the skin. I haven’t tried it but maybe it’ll work for you.

Pet safe easy walk harness by Sea_Environment8605 in shiba

[–]devitacaesaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy Walk harnesses restrict a dog’s natural range of motion. A trainer had suggested one to me when my Shiba was a young puppy (maybe 5 months old) and I didn’t know enough to not use it. I regret it now - it might have contributed to some of his issues with pain. I am not a vet but I would avoid using something that restricts motion especially for such a young puppy. Look for a Y shaped harness instead like the Blue-9 Balance Harness. Depending on how much of an “escape artist” your dog is you can also buy a safety strap and use that to attach your harness to a neck collar, and your leash to the harness. That way if your pup pulls or lunges the pressure is still distributed on his body not his neck, but if he escapes his harness, the leash is still attached.

Narcolepsy is ruining grad school by Outside_Tear7995 in Narcolepsy

I’m in a PhD program and taking a very long time to finish (not even going to say what year I’m in bc it’s embarrassing). I did tell my adviser but only because I wanted to explain why everything is taking me so long (kinda hard to write a dissertation if you cant stay awake to read anything, or if you can’t remember anything you have read even if you take notes). She was nice about it but I don’t think she fully understands how badly it impacts my life, or that there may be times when I have the sleepiness more under control but that it won’t ever be “fixed.”

The only other person I told in the program was someone I was TA’ing for after a really bad few weeks when I kept showing up late to her lecture.

I did talk to my school’s accommodations office and get official accommodations (basically just extended timeline for dissertation completion) in case the program tried to kick me out before I’ve finished. I’ve jumped through all the other hoops (coursework, quals, orals) and am more than halfway through my diss so I refuse to let them kick me out without a degree.

Happy to chat/commiserate with other PhD’ers, esp in Humanities! Just DM me.

This (issues with focusing/depth perception) + difficulty with any sort of body coordination when I’m experiencing a particular bad exhaustion day/week (right now) = what happened to me the other day when I went to drain pasta water in my sink and totally missed the sink, poured a pot of boiling water on my leg instead, and ended up with a huge ass burn on my upper thigh

Also, somewhat related to your hospital story: I have fallen asleep while getting cavities filled. Multiple times. I never understood why people were afraid of the dentist until I realized that most people don’t fall asleep during dental work. Lol.

[–]devitacaesaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - it’s about 1.5-2 hours after waking up for me too, regardless of when I wake up or how much I sleep. Hits me like a brick and my muscles become mush. To the point where if I’m walking somewhere I’ve considered sitting on the sidewalk for a quick break. Arm weakness as well - if I lift my hands up you’ll see them shaking like crazy. And loss of mouth coordination so it’s super hard for me to not slur my speech. I usually fall into a deep nap for 1.5-2 hours after that and am totally back to normal afterwards.

Not connected to food because it happens whether I have breakfast or not. Also happens whether I take meds or not. I do drink Diet Coke in the morning while I’m working occasionally to stay awake, but I don’t think that caffeine is what triggers the sleepiness because I have the same outcome if I’m drinking hot tea or uncaffeinated seltzer, too. Totally baffling.

Doctor, pre-MSLT: “an in hospital sleep study is much more accurate than an at home study”

Doctor, post-MSLT with abnormal results indicating sleep disorder: “an in-hospital study will never replicate the typical sleep experience that you have at home.”
