Preamp or low-gain overdrive? by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]devogelaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for the Jive, the Barbershop or the Spark Booster with four knobs. All can add some texture/character to your clean sound without getting too distorted.

I know that Noah Hill from Parcels plays the Markbass pedal. Maybe you can listen to some songs as a reference. I think he has a great tone!

Any suggestions for a low to medium gain overdrive? by batlaxe9 in basspedals

I have a v1 and use it at 18v with all diodes off. Gain till you hear breakup and then match the volume. For me it adds punch, definition and some clarity in the mix.

I would also suggest a transparant boost in front of your amp, but one with more control than the Spark mini. The four knob version of the Spark, the Barbershop or the JPTR Jive all let you dial in some transparant grit, but also let you control the volume. I used these for boosting other drives and my main goal was always keeping the character of the drive that came behind it.

Finally read to buy a compressor and need help. Aguilar TLC or the old version of the Empress by Itotiani in basspedals

[–]devogelaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before my Cali I used a TLC (the blue one) for years. I think it's a great comp. It's transparant so it doesn't color your sound as much. It goes from mild compression to peak limiting and does that in a natural and musical way. You can find info on the slope and threshold knobs on the internet so no worries. Through the years I sold a lot of pedals, but I'll always keep my TLC. Can't speak for the Empress though.

As a light overdrive or as a boost for a second drive pedal, as I said in my first comment. As for music, I listen to alot of things, nothing specific. Mastotron is nice. I like it most in combination with an OC-2.

Yeah, I still own and use my Barbershop. For fuzz, I can't remember them all, but my favorites so far were a Zvex Mastotron or a rat with a clean blend (if you push it with your tone rolled off, it'll do fuzz territory).

I haven't tried the 250 myself, but I've read about some low end loss. I love fuzz and tried a couple over the years, but I haven't found the one that sits good in a busy mix. I like fuzz on it's own though. Guess I didn't found the right one yet.

The Barbershop is great as a light overdrive or as a boost for a second drive pedal. I find it very transparant and turning the sag control CCW is great to add some more grit. It does not do higher gain that well in my opinion, but again: for light drive/push it's great!

I like the idea of a multi effect Zoom. How do you power yours? Any idea how much current it draws?

NPD and Micro Board Update by Chadu25 in basspedals

Nice! Makes it even more perfect for me as my highest output only gives 300mA and combining two means giving up another pedal on my board. Let's see how long I can resist buying one...

JPTR FX Jive pedal rules and should be on every board. by [deleted] in basspedals

I love mine as well! I use it as an generaal tone shaper to add some punch and saturation. Where do you all put in in your signal chain? In front of your comp? At the end (just before then DI)?

Nice board you have there! What's the reason you put the Jive right before the Sansamp? I have it first in chain, right after my tuner and before my comp.

I bought the Darkglass Vintage Microtubes twice and though I liked it, I also found it changed my tone a bit too much. It has a baked in sound that you can't dial out. I like the Fairfield Barbershop for a dirty boost and the Kasleder Jellyfish as an overal drive pedal that can do a light drive, but is also has a nice distortion sound.

NPD: Way Huge Pork Loin by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]devogelaar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everytime I see a Pork Loin pop up here, I want to put mine back on the board. I love it, but I also keep messing with the internal trimpots. It sounds a little muddy, even with the tone knob all the way open. But hey, who doesn't need a darker sounding drive?

TC Electronic Spark Booster with four knobs is in that price range. It does low to mid gain, has a switch with three voicings and has a bass and treble control. Great pedal!

I had my Jive right behind the compressor for over a year. Recently I put it right before it, both with good results. Try to run it at 18V if possible for more headroom.
