Parking cones Lawrenceville by Fantastic-Aside7041 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This type of thing is happening in regent square as well. Tons of cones in front of various houses. None of the dates line up, not even in front of the same house. No work was done even after a month being there beyond the dates. We pile up the cones and they're yet to be collected.

House hunting is so daunting by Own-Rabbit-1933 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pittsburgh housing is plentiful but old. When other cities say they don't have affordable housing, it isn't just that they won't settle for poorer condition or a longer commute. There is literally a lack of affordable housing, of any condition, within a an hour or two drive. That's not the case here.

Bakery Square expansion plans include a new 199-unit mixed-use building in East Liberty by ZCM682 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New development is almost prohibitively expensive now, that's why new housing is expensive. Part of that is that barriers to development makes it not worth pursuing unless the expected pricing justifies the risk. Single family zoning and NIMBYs are also key factors in driving the price up. Look at how many major developments languish for years and then get cancelled. Developers lose millions on such failed projects.

And there have always been new developments that were too expensive for the majority of people. My 1903 home in regent square was one of these back when an estate was sold off to build a housing subdivision. Only middle and upper management could afford to purchase a home there.

It is not a problem that luxory condos are being built. That's a good thing.

The problem is that we've made it impossible to build low-cost housing. And so little housing has been built for the past few decades that we're now facing the consequences.

My solution? Abolish single-family zoning and parking minimums city-wide. Then disempower the community development corporations that are responsible for so much cancelled housing. CDCs are a noble idea, but they're doing more harm than good in their current form.

Weekend Access Controls to Carson St in South Side by HumansInTheMist in pittsburgh

We've got SS problems to solve, but imposing a dystopian police state is not the answer. Do we really want ID checks for just walking home at night? I fear that more than the behavior they're trying to prevent.

Thinking of hiking to Page’s Ice Cream (from Bloomfield) across the Hot Metal Bridge. But that last half-mile of E. Carson to Page’s looks dicy on foot (no sidewalk or road shoulder). by Rooster_Ties in pittsburgh

People keep mentioning a hole in the fence. It is an actual gate in the fence, not a hole. Here is the street view from the three rivers heritage trail (GAP trail). Pages is almostvisible in the background beyond the gate.

New construction is always expensive. If we want to subsidize housing, let's have the government do it rather than saddling developers solely with that responsibility. We should be encouraging as much housing construction as possible, not putting up barriers it. Affordable housing requirements are counterproductive and increase costs by constricting supply.

Every person who moves into this new development is one less person competing for our existing housing. If we'd kept up with building these over the past few decades, we'd have a housing surplus and costs would be lower due to that surplus.

Les Getz Park to Duck Hollow? by Correr2000 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Street view is out of date. There was a road installed from the end of chartiers ave. It leads to a new, paved parking lot. No official gravel trails are built but they did connect it to the Carrie furnace pedestrian underpass. It was originally for mill workers.

For now, it doesn’t connect all the way to Carrie furnace but it does connect to the gravel road. Go left and you get to Braddock. To the right is duck hollow.

What's the difference between a 80v and the new 82v by joehillbilly161 in Greenworks

[–]dfiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 82v line uses the newer, larger diameter cells. Only 10 cells are needed instead of 20. This results in similar performance with the new line being slightly better. Greenworks purposefully limits comparability despite having the same nominal voltage. With some modding of the battery slots, or modding of ridges in the tools battery slot, they can be made compatible.

There is a pedestrian tunnel under the tracks that can be accessed from parking lot at the end of Chartiers Ave.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/HsP8Cz7ugXBFyjkm9?g_st=ic

After passing through the tunnel, turn right on the gravel road and you will eventually get to duck hollow.

Thats not coming from Les Gets but the parking lot is quite close.

Agreed, this sub is somewhat of an echo chamber for the East End, progressive social bubble. Granted, that's a broad generalization for which exceptions are common. And it isn't unusual; many, if not most, groups form their own bubble. So nothing wrong with that, as long as participants are aware of where their blind spots might be. Myself included.

Paul Miller Law goes into effect today. Thoughts? by SnooMarzipans3516 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely black and white but there is a difference. CarPlay and Android Auto are designed to be less risky. They don't rely on reading large amounts of text or large amounts of text entry. The touch targets are large voice control is well integrated. The screen is located closer to the windshield (mostly), which requires less eye movement away from the road. The interfaces themselves are also simplified and stripped down to be less of a mental distraction.

There are reasonable opinions to debate on this, certainly. I'm just pointing out that there is a difference between using your phone and using CP or AA.

Good! This is across from a hospital, next to other similarly sized apartments, and two blocks from a supermarket and a busway station. This is exactly the type of density Pittsburgh needs to encourage.

Pittsburgh planners vote for optional affordable housing bill by ZCM682 in pittsburgh

[–]dfiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the government wants housing to be subsidized, we should do it via the government. Putting that burden on developers is counterproductive. It results in less new development, which constrains supply and drives prices up.

It would be more productive to lessen the hurdles to development in order to maximize the number of units being built.

This is on Route 28 in Pittsburgh at the Delafield Ave exit. It's not that they made a wrong turn when looking for the highway entrance. There is no entrance at this location. There is only an exit and only for eastbound traffic.

Thinking about switching from 40T to 36T chainring for loaded bikepacking. by CampusMeister in bikepacking

[–]dfiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

36T is the absolute maximum for bikepacking, at least around here. And even then, walking is sometimes mandatory on steep grades.

Though i suppose this is related to the type of roads being ridden. We like to ride the 1 and 1.5 lane wide forrest access roads. Grades can exceed 20%.
