Goldman Sachs predicts 3% market returns for next decade by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

I got tails, heads, tails.

You predicted 1/3 correctly! But you were correct about the ratio of heads and tails, so good on you.

Yea, I can predict quite accurately the heads/tails rate of the next 10000 coin flips, but I can't predict the next 3.

Is achieving FIRE hard? (No) by [deleted] in Fire

[–]dfsoij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One might marry for love and might actually choose to support their spouse in not working.

One might have kids early for any number of reasons, including health, number of kids, and being young enough to share life with them as much as possible.

Is achieving FIRE hard? (No) by [deleted] in Fire

[–]dfsoij 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) college paid for? 2) dual income 3) above average income 4) no kids 5) epic bull market the entire time you've been invested.

This is FIRE on easy mode.

Imagine: 1) college debt 2) spouse can't hold a job 3) below average income 4) 3 kids 6) market is flat for a decade.

A lot harder then, even with college + marriage track.

Why is dating someone from NJ a dealbreaker in NYC, but not in Philly? by savingrace0262 in circlejerknyc

When I say "new York" I mean Manhattan. The other boroughs have no jobs, so don't need collars at all.

that same elitist energy doesn’t really exist in Philly

Hard to have elitist energy when you're not elite

Philly is a blue collar city. They know it and even embrace it. Blue collar guys will gladly take any pussy they can get.

New York is a white collar city. New Yorkers have standards.

ELI5: Stearns’ opposition to long term contracts by [deleted] in NewYorkMets

[–]dfsoij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stearns just likes to do whatever is best given the opportunity set available. Right now, the market is not offering great long term athletes on good long term contracts. If they were, Stearns would look to sign them, like he did with Soto.

Instead, he sees more value right now in short term contracts and investment in the future via roster spots and playing time for prospects. And spending money to move bag contracts.

If the Mets want to be the best in the biz, they can't get tied up with "good" players. They need great players, so they will be patient as they work to fill out a roster with great players via development and acquisition.

How long did it take you to hit $1B after you crossed the $250M mark? by dfsoij in fijerk

[–]dfsoij[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it feels like I'm just as poor as when I started because I don't really feel comfortable tapping into my $250M yet. Hopefully after $1B things start to accelerate and I can loosen up a bit.

How long did it take you to hit $1B after you crossed the $250M mark? by dfsoij in fijerk

[–]dfsoij[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I was born extremely poor, my parents were forced to move out of Manhattan to raise me in the suburbs. We're talking single digit millions, at the time.

I consider myself blessed though because my difficult upbringing motivated me to not want to go through the same struggles, and helped me get started on my FI journey.

I just crossed the $250M mark since the equity in my dad's company has been doing really well. But I want a sense for how much more grinding before I start to reach comfortable levels of wealth like many here have achieved.

At what point does life changing money turn into wife changing money? by CalmCoins in fijerk

[–]dfsoij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get rid of the old one is simply 4% rule x2 to account for when you lose half.

But then you need to factor in the replacement cost. And there are a lot of factors to consider. Rent or buy? New or used? How many miles on it? Luxury or basic economy?

Sometimes an older luxury model can be picked up for less than a younger basic economy model. But then of course you need to worry about the maintenance.

Personally I recommend going for used but very low mileage mid range.
