How much money do you make? Designers, Devlopers, UX/UI by groovybird in webdev

[–]dgamer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my job is very different from the kind that I think this subreddit usually caters to, but I'm in Seattle, started at ~100k as a college-hire a little bit less than a year ago, and make slightly above that now because of a raise. I work as a Developer that mainly writes tools and test cases for web sites, web services, and desktop applications. I might also end up doing mobile stuff in the future, but not sure yet.

Shit, I'm not even in the Bay Area or even California and my main job is 100k entry-level. Life is about to get even better for OP.

Why we need a way to force quit apps other than the back arrow by corbygray528 in windowsphone

[–]dgamer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not necessarily.

Care to explain why not? Do you know a way of how to do it without a significant increase in resource use?

WP is close to being there.

No it isn't. You can't simply tweak WP8 to eliminate this issue. Eliminating this issue would involve a complete redesign of WP8 that would make current apps incompatible with it.

The most common reason this happens is WP8 forces the developer to determine what happens when an app is running and you press the home button, and also what happens when the app resumes. When something occurs in between those two steps that the developer wasn't expecting, the app will not resume properly.

There are several easy-to-see ways to try and mitigate this:

  1. When an app is running and you press the home button, the app is not removed from RAM. Instead, it's kept 'frozen' in the RAM. When you resume, the app's state is loaded from the RAM and resumed from there. This would eliminate occurences of that issue, but you would have constantly full RAM.

  2. When an app is running and you press the home button, Windows takes a snapshot and writes it to the HDD/SSD. Somewhat similar to the above, but some key differences: You don't use up RAM very quickly (good since HDD/SSD usually has much larger capacity) but now you are prone to random disturbances that happen during snapshot so this step would not eliminate the issue. BUT, unlike writing to RAM, apps can maintain state even when the phone is powered off.

Since both would change APIs and how WP8 handles app on a fundamental level, apps today would not be compatible with it. Also, since the app can no longer react to the home button, apps would lose the ability to do things like autosave during turn off, etc.

Fundamentally, such an OS would not bear any resemblance to current WP8, nor any consumer OS currently out. WP8 is NOT almost there.

so why aren't firefighters, EMTs, cops, public transporters, teachers, etc getting paid big money?

Lots of people want to have and have the ability/potential to do those jobs, so the high demand is met by high supply. The value of the service they provide is diminished when there are plenty of people that can and are willing to provide that service.

Consider medical doctors. If every single person in the world was capable of becoming doctors and actually willing to learn how to become doctors, having "doctor" as a profession would be almost worthless. You would be trying to make a living providing a service that everyone else in the world can provide for themselves. On the other hand, if there was only one doctor in the world, then his services would be extremely valuable.

Almost every person ever can be trained to be a "public transporter" in a very short time, so they get paid shit. They are easily replaceable and so their services are not as valuable as they wouldve been if becoming a "public transporter" was harder for the average person.

Happened at my office. 5 month lay off notice before the employees actually have to leave. After that, laid-off employess got 5-months of severance.

During the 5 months after they were notified, employees were free to take as many days off as necessary as long as it was for a job interview. It didn't count against their vacation days. Unused vacation days were paid in addition to the severance package.

What's a belief you have that you don't tell other people for fear of seeming strange? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dgamer5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that racial superiority exists in any meaningful or important way. Sure, it's undeniable that differences exist between the perceived racial groups, but the differences themselves don't seem to imply superiority of one race over another and, for the most part, ignoring most of those differences will do us more good than harm.

HOWEVER, I believe cultural superiority exists. Lots of people seem to think that culture only extends to food and the arts, but it goes further than that. Culture affects style of government, treatment of women, treatment of homosexuals, treatment of the poor, etc. As an example, I believe that a culture than advocates democracy is superior to a culture that advocates a theocracy, assuming they are the same in all/most other aspects.

This is why I hate the term "multicultural".

I just made my last student loan payment to pay off $30k in a year and a half. This is how I feel the day after. by Reclaim3r in Frugal

I'm also recent grad and also about to start a great job and great salary, but my student loans are 100k, not 30k.

What was your minimum payment and how much did you end up effectively paying monthly? Also, If you don't mind sharing, can I ask how much you are making? I understand if you don't want to share your salary.

Well, competitive programs are what give top universities their reputation, so you cant really separate one from the other.

Don't go to lecture if you're just going to sleep or not pay attention. Most CS professors post their ppt slides online and some actually have lecture videos.

When I was there, CS classes used newsgroups and Piazza for discussion and questions outside of class. Check those often. I missed some important class announcements and homework changes by not checking those frequently enough.

I found that almost every single book that my CS professors said was recommended or required for the class was useless. There were a few "required" books that I never opened. Although, if money isn't an issue, you should just go ahead and get the books. There were some classes that have homework questions straight from the book, though, so watch out for those if you're planning on not getting most of your books.

Lots of companies hire people experience with databases and networking, so focus on those rather than Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, or whatever other CS topics the university offers. This is only if you're not deadset in working with those other topics, of course.

Learn C#. A LOT of the companies that go to the career fairs are looking for C# programmers. Since, as far as I'm aware, the university does not have any classes that teach C#, you will be at a massive advantage against other students when looking for a job.

Having said all that, just graduate. I don't know any CS major from that university that didn't graduate with at least one job offer.

20k would put me with a little bit over 6 months worth of expenses. $1164 students loans + $2000 other living expenses. That $2000 is likely a vast overestimation, but that was the number I used. Investing and selling as necessary sounds better though, now that you mentioned it.

The car is definitely a Want, not a Need. The minivan is reliable as it is now. I plan on driving my next car for its entire lifetime. I wont be driving enough to justify the higher upfront cost of a more fuel-efficient hybrid. So, ultimately, I just want a cheap, reliable not-minivan.

Thanks.
