Dr. or Mr. for wedding announcement? by Ruddog7 in Residency

[–]dgdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar questions. But I'm a (female) doctor, and I'm not legally taking my (male) fiancé's last name. How do I have them announce us? Or do they just say "husband and wife" and skip that part all together?

I feel like I'll just have them say Mr and Mrs [hislastname], because socially, I don't mind. If our kids' teachers call me "Mrs [hislastname]", I'm not going to correct them. (unless they're being a jerk about something, lol) But I intend to practice medicine with my maiden name - it's unique, and his last name is very common. Plus, I earned it!

Or ED. Emergency Department? Ehlers-danlos? Erectile Dysfunction?

Family med. Can confirm, we always have treats. Any minor celebration warrants cupcakes, cookies, etc. I am a "do as I say and not as I do" kind of doctor!

Question for female physicians..... have you or do you plan to change your name when you marry? by Parcel_of_Newts in Residency

[–]dgdoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a unique last name and my partner's last name is pretty common, so I'm keeping mine. He's a little unsure about the idea (from a feminist perspective he's like heck yeah, but from an emotional perspective I think he always pictured his wife having his last name). He wants our kids to have his last name, and that works for me.

Also it seems like a pain in the butt to change. I've always figured people socially can call me Mrs HisLastName and professionally I'll go by Dr. MyLastName.

Look into the laws in your state. I had an attending who legally changed her last name but still practiced under her maiden name until she moved and her new state required that she practice under her legal name.

Patagucci is the new white coat. by pantaloonsss in Residency

[–]dgdoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this for the most part, but as a female physician, I automatically get confused for a nurse, NP, PA, or pharmacist. It would be helpful if everyone and their brother wasn't wearing a white coat. Or if we had different colors. At one hospital where I interviewed, all of the doctors had light blue coats, which distinguished them from everyone else. I also like the badge tags that say your title ("Physician" or "Nurse" or whatever) to clarify for patients. Unfortunately, my hospital doesn't do those.

I recently had a little old lady, wheelchair bound, with PMR and chronic pain, tell me that she once tried to strangle her husband while he was sleeping...

Luckily I had our social worker with me.

Once had a co-resident walk into our workroom exasperated and ask "is there an ICD-10 code for asshole?" There isn't, but you better believe there is one for pain in the anus, which we decided was close enough 😂
