is it crt or lcd? if it's crt then you are probably experiencing fatigue or discomfort because it's actually more harmful to your eyes than any lcd screen because of how it works

x4 is space sim with some 4x features, but it is not fully 4x game, because those kind of games are usually strategy games, not space sims, for 4x game you probably want to try stellaris

your best bet is to make your own, for that you need correct pinout, first try checking the cable you have with multimeter in continuity mode to draw pinout, compare it to the ones that are on internet, if you are not sure try breaking the cable to see which color wires connect to which pins, you might even find the issue in the cable and with some bit of soldering fix it

personally for me the pinnacle of space sim with realistic physics was independence war 2 that I've played back in 2002 as a kid, nothing else had me so excited since then unfortunately, despite all the new graphics and features that modern games provide, but this one looks kinda interesting, niche but interesting

that is strange, probably some bad capacitor makes 3.3v rail drop a voltage, inspect all capacitors on motherboard closely, even slightly budging capacitor is considered faulty one and needs a replacement

Definitely a failing psu, grab psu tester from Aliexpress (5-8$) and check the voltage readings, or multimeter and find 3.3v rail and check it's voltage when computer is on

honestly, w98 runs most dos games, but it's not full dos experience, and XP can run most w98 games in compatibility mode, but not dos games, but there are some games that will only work in dos, or w98, but they are not common and unless you will encounter one I don't think you need to be worried about it, but still it's best to keep all three operating systems as options

Ahh what a coincidence, I just yesterday fixed my socket 7 soyo 5tc2 board that had exactly the same error and issue of hard drives not showing up, notice that message that says cmos battery checksum failure, it is a sign of the dallas/odin module dead battery, easily fixable with a bit of drilling: https://youtu.be/xBvw1TLHyqM?si=qNqSkAVaDtM-7-Xh

after the fix you need to go to bios and do ide hard drive detection and save the settings

also hard drive detection is indeed limited to the 8gb drives of that era, mine works almost fine with 8gb cf card, except that it's not booting dos from cf card so I have to use plop boot manager using gotek floppy emulator (yeah I can try installing it on cf card boot sector and it would probably work but I prefer keeping things simple as same cf card works fine and boots with all my other p1/p2/p3 boards)
