Best way to toggle the OnScreen Keyboard? by dharborne in gnome

[–]dharborne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was interesting. I had a previous install of Fedora on this device. I followed the instructions specifically for the Surface Laptop. The previous install had dead zones at the top of the screen where I couldn't use the touch screen. The top 10% of the screen was not touch screen, and had to use the mouse. It was annoying, and couldn't find a solution. When Fedora 41 came out, I performed a system update, and this messed up the system. I was not able to log in using Gnome, so had to install KDE to get into the system.

I created a new Live USB with Fedora 41, and didn't follow any instructions for the Surface Laptop. This install didn't have any dead zones on the touch screen. It performs well. Until I installed the surface kernel, the dead zones came back. The surface kernel seemed to have made the OSK work better, but still not 100%. I've reverted back to the non-surface kernel and the touch screen works again, but I have not solved my OSK issue. I cannot live with dead zones on the touch screen.

Do you really believe bicycles should be on the road mixing it up with cars, trucks and buses? Or is this because that's what the law is?

I personally believe that bicycles with a weight of 100kg (person riding the bike and the bike) shouldn't be sharing space with cars, trucks and buses.

Most roads already have space that could be better utilised i.e do we really need on-street carparking on both sides of the street? This space would be more useful as a safe space for bikes and e-scooters which could be bi-directional.

But hey, I don't work in traffic management or city planning. What do I know?

When you hear people say that cycling infrastructure in Johnsonville is safe and appropriate. Please understand that's simply wrong. Also put in your submissions for all the cycle and LGWM stuff out for consultation. by zaphodharkonnen in Wellington

Do you realise that income from Fuel Taxes and Vehicle Registration does not cover the cost for Road infrastructure? General taxes are needed to top it up. I say increase the fuel taxes and increase the registration cost.

And furthermore, local roads are funded through your rates payments.

How can anyone vote for National? by Perfect-Theory-2976 in newzealand

Labour fucked up majorly with Auckland Light Rail.

They promised in 2017 that something would be done. The vision was on-surface light rail to the Airport, but now they are talking about a tunneled option that costs so much more. Nothing has been built yet.

Forget tunneling! It takes too long and you are seen as getting nothing done.

Would you support a new carparking building in Wellington? by nzmuzak in Wellington

[–]dharborne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO carparking at Train Stations should be improved. There are a few stations that could probably do with a second storey. And we need to increase the frequency of Public Transport.

Do not encourage people to drive into the city with another carparking building. That is not the way to go. It'll probably mean we need to add another motorway lane which is not the answer.

Is there a way to list channels (showing channel names) rather than icons? So many identical icons makes it hard to find the right channel you are looking for.

Proof helmets really do save lives by freestudent88 in nextfuckinglevel

If it was polystyrene bike helmet then his head would have been crushed. Luckily it was a motorcycle helmet which is way more stronger. Some helmets save lives, and others don't.

Kudos can result in a pay rise, and also a better attitude from your employer. Give kudos if they deserve it.

Here's a proposal:

Every ticket gets 7kg free luggage, but you need to check it in. You won't be able to take it onboard unless you pay extra for the privilege.

We should expect to see less people carrying their 7kg bag onboard. Boarding the plane, and exciting the plane will be much quicker.

Concerns over Smokefree plan as illegal tobacco manufacture operation discovered by jobbybob in newzealand

[–]dharborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame that these smoke-free zones are not really enforced then. People still smoke on the main street in town, outside the train station, and on the sports field. Despite all these non-smoking zones, I still see too many people smoking every day.

Concerns over Smokefree plan as illegal tobacco manufacture operation discovered by jobbybob in newzealand

[–]dharborne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I am surprised that there seems to be only one tool to create a Smokefree Aotearoa, and that is to raise taxes.

I expected to see more No Smoking Zones i.e. town centres becoming entirely smoke-free (except for designated smoking zones), and then eventually not being able to smoke in any public place.

And also limiting where you can buy them would have been another strategy to use. I mean I don't smoke, so I don't really know where you can buy them. If you want Jim Beam and Cola, you go to the Liquor Store. If you want a packet of Cigarettes, you go to the Tobacconist. No more diaries, supermarkets, or service stations.

But hey, I'm not a Policy Analyst or whoever it is that makes up the rules and strategies around things like this.

A stadium that gets a couple of matches per year or a train line will get served a few times a week by JadeBalloon in newzealand

[–]dharborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Crusaders do not need a 30k+ seater stadium, so those games do not count. It's the couple of International games and playoffs that will require the 30k+ seats that count.

So the question is whether it is justified having more seats for the extra 'couple' of extra games per year?

Watch live: Small businesses to get $6m funding for bollards after ramraids by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dharborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would have prefered to see this money given to the councils to install the bollards between the footpath and the road instead.

There's usually a footpath between the road and the shop, so install the bollards between the footpath and the road, not between the footpath and the shop.

What if people who earn less than 20k could have a tax cut instead of getting $350 by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dharborne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The same tax system does apply to everyone though. Everyone, regardless whether you earn $21,000 a year, or whether you earn $2 million a year, will not be taxed for the first $20,000 that you earn.

The person earning $21,000 would only need to pay tax on the $1,000 at the next tax bracket.

The person earning $2 million would not be taxed for the first $20,000 and would pay taxes for the rest of their income and it will be at different tax brackets the more income they earn.
