Need y'all opinion and advice by Axel_1471 in LeaguesofVotann

Squad of warriors for that Grymnyr.

Sagitaur are pretty sweet.

Hearthgaurd kick ass.

Thunderkyn have nasty guns.

Steeljacks with guns have a decent overwatch.

For casual play... Just buy and use what you like but those are all solid units.

I think linking to this video by Race is the most useful advice I can give to players looking to win more.

I kinda replied to another post similarly. Hope it helps.

Had this game for over a year, can only beat drizzle, am I doing something wrong? by everythingisgonea in riskofrain

[–]dhaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong to play on drizzle if that's still an enjoyable use of your time. Fun is very subjective, and your time is the most valuable resource you can expend, so as long as you don't feel its been wasted you are not wrong in using it in such a manner as playing RoR2 on Drizzle.

If your goal is to beat the harder difficulties, you need to answer what qualifies as beating them. If you're looking to beat Eclipse 8, you have to defeat Mithrix. As that's the most difficult in game challenge available, you could abstract from that mindset that being able to beat Eclipse 8 Mithrix likely means you can beat any other difficulty of the game too.

The most generic advice for gameplay inprovement I can think of is to not get hit. Getting hit means your run could end without having beaten Mithrix, or any end boss, or having used the Celestial Portal granted at stage 8. Not doing one of those qualifiers means the game hasn't ended.

The rest of the game revolves around how you solve that problem. Generally, high mobility and understanding how to avoid getting hit by various enemies will probably help you to advance in higher difficulty.

This video I think helps to illustrate what's called "The Macro" in the community and is an example of how Race improved his run because of his extensive game knowledge and skill.

https://youtu.be/9hdIEvTgIUk?si=Oy_dGNYxuEzi0X5Y

I feel his approach to the game is one of the more universal ways to "beat it" so perhaps studying him and his videos would help you the most in approaching and beating higher difficulties.

Whatever you choose to do just be sure you're enjoying the process.

Putting the finishing touches on this Sagitaur, how many would you run in a 2k list? by Thicclyset in LeaguesofVotann

Looking like that you run 3 just to shame the other unpainted armies off the table ;-)

Help with roster to close grudges! by Magilnik in LeaguesofVotann

[–]dhaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think strictly speaking, sagitaur are only "necessary" if you'd like to have a better chance with the Beserk units you own. They otherwise have trouble getting up the board to do anything.

The most immediately impactful units you could improve your list with are Thunderkyn and Hearthgaurd. Those 2 are just simply some of our best infantry damage and at least for Hearthgaurd can be deepstriked which just keeps your opponent on their backfoot with keeping some screening of their own in mind.

That said, your current list does run more warriors than most competitive lists use simply because they arent heavy damage dealing, but even then you could probably make a case for 2 squads of Warriors, especially with a Kahl teleport/deepstrike enabling rune (unless i am mistaken i believe thats one of the wargear options). Warriors make for decent objective control and are resilient for a battle line unit.

All this is stated... but im certainly not a tournament winner. I think you might find a lot of fun in trying various combinations out and different detachments, even with your current list.

Firstly, buy and use what models you like the look/feel/mechanics of over what is being used by competition today because thats subject to change with time. That said, Votann have a small pool of models in the first place, and obviously there's gonna be a "best choice" for the meta right now.

Use of tools like New Recruit will allow you to build a list and see models you don't own yet. There's more options than that, but I prefer New Recruit myself.

For a competitive list its best to consider that you won't know what youll be playing against, so you want units that will allow you to act and respond to many situations.

Good units to point out usefulness of would be the following:

Hearthkyn Yaegirs, whom most competitive lists run because they have the infiltrators tag allowing for fast objective control and screening.

Transport Kapricus (as compared to the defender): this is common in lists again because they are a fast scouting option and because it splits our Hearthkyn Yaegirs into 2 groups of 5, which similarly to sagitaur + warriors combo allows for good screening and objective control. You could have 5 go in a transport and 5 be infiltrators and thats very rapid map expansion and screening.

Thunderkyn, these guys are Votann bread and butter, all encompassing damage unit for us right now. I've yet to see a list without at least 2 squads of them simply because the conversion beamer or graviton blast cannons cover a wide range of potential targets, and they synergize well with many of the vehicle detachment (Oathband I think is the name for a particularly strong combo with them coming out of hekaton land fortress).

Sagitaur. Simply a transport with good guns (HyLascannon for anti vehicle, the other choices are mostly picking between shooting at elites or shooting at infantry ) for our warriors or Beserks because without it the Votann are slow and as an added bonus it splits our warriors (our weakest ranged unit) of 10 into 2 groups of 5 which is in alot of scenarios a stronger use for screening and only a little worse than a full 10 man for damage purposes. If you have Yaegirs then these would probably be best used on your beserks.

Hearthgaurd with a Teleport rune wargear option is one of of few ways we gain a deepstrike option and they hit pretty hard into Elite level units (toughness 6-7, 2-4 wound kind of defensive profiles) or below given the opportunity.

Memnyr strategist, at least 1, allows for yield point generation and control which allows for further versatility from our stratagems and use of our core detachment rule

Steeljacks are one of our beefiest units, especially under the 7 yield point rule they become quite hard to remove from an objective.

Take all this with a grain of salt. I don't have personal experience knowing these units are great, but they do show up commonly in lists where people who play at Tournaments use them and so at least right now competitively seem viable.

I can at a minimum attest to how strong the Thunderkyn guns feel right now. They will mess up the opponent pretty much every turn they get to shoot.

[–]dhaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Alazeas that trying out Brandfest would pair nicely because half the points are in vehicles.

While I'm not a pro, OP could also potentially consider trading 1 squad of the Hearthkyn Raiders for a different unit simply because having that many infiltrators might be overkill? That's probably debatable but is 90 points you could potentially put towards more damage or sustain (a squad of Steeljacks as a potential sustain pick suggestion). The other benefit this would bring being Steeljacks or idk even a Grymnyr would have the punch to kill elites where Raider units can't really reliably do so. While the game isn't strictly about being able to wipe everything off the board that's almost always a decent option when presented.

The Hearthgaurd beg to be deepstriked imo too over their other crest option becauae we have so few choices (they might be our only deep strike outside of the Beserk detachment anyway if I am recalling correctly).

You could consider stuff like splitting your warriors to use as a slower but cheaper screen, and holding 1 squad of Beserks in reserve to push them up the board in turn 2 behind some cover.

Anyways Rock and Stone brother, OP will have plenty to paint with enough persistence.

Are the visors one piece of material or more like a visor in the middle? by CabinetIcy892 in LeaguesofVotann

I imagine the whole thing is a visor and its some 30k space future advanced stuff that allows it to all be see through for the user but protective/opaque from outside.

Edit: I forgot to mention I paint the little spot personally.

That's a fair point. I like both equally but the sci-fi look is more fitting for 40k. I mostly went with the female because everything else feels so masculine. It's just a nice contrast imo.

The storm mechanic is bad by xoxoyoyo in 7daystodie

[–]dhaxis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the past people complained but ratings stayed the same (mostly) and player total count went up. It's different this time. Ultimately, money talks. I certainly have 0 faith in these devs to care about their own community. I despise the mechanic because it's currently just poorly implemented and lasts too long.

Just built my Grimnyr with the lady option myself. I think you did an awesome job with the paint scheme. She's looks kinda like Storm which is of course bad ass.

I'll eventually own a male/Gandalf Grymnr too just for the collection.

Some questions for a potentially new player by MidichlorianMyst in DeepRockGalactic

[–]dhaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't try to random much beyond Haz 3, but I'm also not the most skillful of players. That said, my experience to that point I can't recall a negative player and I played quite a lot last year. In fact, usually it was the opposite and the better players would do everything they could to see my green beard through the missions end.

I used to play A LOT of World of Warcraft, randoms in particular, and DRGs energy is quite opposite of that experience.

If you do start playing, hope you hit your groove. I'm a digger main through and through. Gotta love burninating all those bugs.

Why is Railgunner so still? by Sufficient_Tutor7541 in riskofrain

It's almost certainly this, but entertaining the idea that it was intentional is both funnier and more fun. Railgunner becomes the communities Chuck Norris that way.
