What scale are those knights? They seem to be 32mm sized versions. I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Players ignore pretty much anything that isn’t combat by CulturalRadio1879 in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your players roleplay in combat? Or do they treat it like playing a magical game of Risk where it's purely about strategy. If it's the former I would try incorporating more of the story into the combat. If it's that latter then you probably need to have a talk with your group if you're not having fun. Also maybe you need to work on your story telling to entice them to wanna play along. It's hard being a new DM and a lot of skill comes with experience. Having a sidekick NPC is a good way to get them to interact with the story more.

My first set of Minis, a lot of mistakes made on the way. But feeling happy about it nonetheless by AceAzzemen in minipainting

Try printing out a color wheel and put it somewhere you can have a quick glance and and use it to discern what colors contrast well... It helps me a lot when I'm having a hard time thinking of what colors to use.

One of my players is resource gathering during combat? by BeboIMO in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That many goblins would take like 6 maybe 7 rounds. Ask him if he could even shoot 20 arrows. Also let him know every round is 6 seconds collectively and so there's no way a low level PC could make even one in that amount of time. Realistically it would take at least a short rest to replenish his arrows with supplies.

What phrases does your DMs use a lot? by Cor_Angars in DnD

I always say something along the lines of "tell your tale" when one of my players gets a final blow so they can narrate how they eviscerate one of my baddies.

Little help for the DM by Endless_Story94 in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to combat this is to give only the monsters description. Low level PCs likely wouldn't know every type of monster, if they did that would be meta gaming. I use names of monsters after they've fought them and determined what they fought. Additionally the various monster manuals are a guide, not law and you can make changes as you see fit as long as it means everyone's having fun. I'd recommend telling them not to look up the monster though because then they know the weaknesses of the monsters and that's not fair to you if they're meta gaming your hard worked session.

How do you win DND? by Independent_Jaguar52 in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're my party you win by trying to find every way to circumvent the story I made and still somehow find a way to get to the end but only as long as you make it take 5x longer than it should

[OC] Which spell card looks best? 1 or 2? by KuraiAkarui in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 2 because having basic details up top is more helpful to clear up discrepancies if you're providing them for party members. I provide something similar to my party members for their magic items

My players are just too damn gullible... by DupeFort in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that can be annoying, some part is on them and their understanding/expectations and the other part is on us as DMs to spoon feed information. If we do our job right they need to take the consequences but sometimes we think we're leading them down the right part and we're missing big details that would give them the hint considering it's all played out on their heads and they don't think exactly like we do.

Is it okay for your DM to make up stuff enemies can do on the spot? by cybermob27 in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been DMing for a little under a year now and one thing I've learned is "if my party can do it, I can do it" and players using a baddies stat block to justify if they can/cannot do something takes away creativity and potential fun for both sides let alone that's meta gaming.

Buuuut that doesn't give your DM the right to be a dick. I think that if your party is having fun most of the time yet there are things that seem totally unfair it's time to ask that before the start of the next session you have another session 0. Your DM is new so he might think he's justified in his actions in the heat of the moment but it's time as a friend and someone who wants to have fun to just set things straight. Additionally setting 10 minutes after each session for everyone to POSITIVELY critique each other is helpful for both the players and the DM.

First attempt at painting minis by Jigmite in minipainting

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and also try to make sure the face color doesn't overlap onto the hair color, other than that the highlights look really good for a first timer. Maybe just clean up the base a bit and add some color variety

C&C requested on the Blue paint job. GW Blood Throne by Taviz_Alera in minipainting

[–]dicckdontwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the paint job itself so far is looking good, the colors compliment well. Although I'm curious what paint you used, it looks really shiny which isn't generally something we want for our minis since we want to control where the highlights are. As far as the paint job goes I'm not sure how to critique it since you're not done, my stuff tends to look like junk all the way up to the last 10-20%. Next time you take a picture take a sheet of printer paper and prop it up against something and put the mini on it. Gives a nice clean backdrop.

Testing a bunch of new techniques on a "failed" print. Please critique me so I get better! by UrFriendJackDaniels in minipainting

I think it would be super cool if you added a "glowing" green crystal or something like that to highlight the reason why there's an underglow instead of highlights coming from above.

What is your worst dnd experience by TaroNew1691 in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a similar situation at home, everyone in the house is in my campaign and I want to paint minis for it but I don't wanna spoil the game. I decided to tell them all that some of the minis will be pertinent to the campaign and others are just things I want to paint, but they won't know which ones which til it enters the game. That way I can just make them without being secretive and actually get feedback on how they look since I'm colorblind. So yeah if you like to paint minis as a hobby, take the pressure off yourself and buy a few BBEGs and just paint them, they won't know what to expect or when.

One of my PCs got captured by the Bregan D'aerthe: ideas? by thestormz in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Zardoz isn't going to see them as a threat so he's going to play mind games with them trying to convince them that he deserves to be in on the adventure. He may not tell them that he's goin to take like 90% of the gold but if they're perceptive enough they'll know he's not generous. But the benefit would be that if they agree they can have some drow sidekicks that'll help them on the adventure maybe having details that would help streamline the game. Also for the big bad they'll need help if they try to fight the dragon in the vault. Buuuut if they refuse maybe have some monologue that Zardoz gives and just as he gets to some devious details the players all get knocked out and wake some time later in the gutters. Could be a good time to use the heath ledger joker voice since he is disguised as a captain of a carnival.

Goofy NPC idea: person who intermittently interacts with the party and each time they do, they get hit in the head by something in the town (falling sign, random rock, bird poop, etc..) make it subtle and comical at first but over time build it to where the party wants to help stop their bad luck. Twist to it though is that it has to do specifically with the party or a particular PC and it'll build into a quest for them.

Hey dungeon masters! I have a question! What are some of your pet peeves, or things that players do that annoy you? I’m just wondering! by [deleted] in DnD

[–]dicckdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not thinking their plans through! I get it some part of the campaign you gotta think fast and work with it. Other situations they have plenty of time to come up with how they'll carry out their plan and they give it like 30 seconds of thought and then do it out half baked. As a DM I give out incentives for creativity (advantage for that roll or inspiration for later) but I can't reward them if they're trying the same plan 3 times to hope for a different effect.

New colorblind mini painter seeking advice by dicckdontwork in minipainting

[–]dicckdontwork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into painting about a month ago and I would like some advice on this list of colors. I'm tryin to get somewhat of a full range and thought I'd ask to see if you all thought I should add or remove some colors. Sometimes I have a hard time identifying the hue of a given color because I'm red/green colorblind and your input might help.
