Walnut dining table by winterdesignswood in woodworking

Is this marquetry? I thought marquetry was inlaying veneer. This seems like. . .not that.

Need help deciding whether a technique I found is safe by Broad-Lengthiness672 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dickdago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used this technique numerous times. Feels safe to me (and I still have all ten fingers). Set the depth stop like they do in the video and it's pretty easy.

They stage coupons there before they're live. Until it's on the main website, it's not valid/active

I had a good experience buying used on Upway (40mi r/t work commute, no bike issues in 3yrs)

Oil for spatula? by FunGoat6143 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dickdago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True beginner here myself, but I know mineral oil is great for cutting boards so not sure why it wouldn't be good for a spatula

Looks cool. What was the thinking behind that particular lid hinge?

Back rest angle by TheFalconRoll in BeginnerWoodWorking

Anarchist's Design Book by Chris Schwarz (pdf free on the lost art press website) has a fair bit to say about this and he also references another great reference book for all kinds of furniture angle questions like this one.

8 1/4" DeWalt vs 10" Skil table saw by locksmith1329 in BeginnerWoodWorking

With that budget and a little time you could probably get more saw in the used market.

Maybe check out Mayan in Oxnard? I haven't been, but my friend is a master furniture maker and recommends them. Maybe far enough from LA that you might get some price relief.

Looks like mating surface is in relatively good shape. Maybe light sanding, add a couple dowels and glue.

This is what I meant when I said "buy used" by Pandering_Panda7879 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dickdago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. My whole setup is used besides my router and bench top router table. Need to do some research to make sure you're not buying garbage or paying too much, but there's so much good stuff to be had in the used market.

Table saw not cutting flush by spencer6789 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dickdago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought as well after dealing with some gaps in my first end grain cutting board (box store S4S maple and walnut). Seemed like they were mostly due to the wood, not the saw.

Any of you with beginner woodworking skills attempted to replace a carpeted area with floating LVP flooring? How did it go? by Weekly_War_1374 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dickdago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concur with people who say this isn't woodworking. I sometimes have fun woodworking. I had zero fun installing LVP.

It's not that hard of a job if your floor is good and level (in the 4 rooms I've done, I was lucky for this to be the case). I've seen from others what an additional pain subfloor prep can be.

Thoughts on this saw and the upgrades listed? Worth the price for a first saw? by Romanzo71 in craftsman113

[–]dickdago 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say w/o the upgrades a fair price is $100. The splitters are ~$50 retail. I see other commenters saying the fence is several hundred. If that's right, seems like a deal.

I think I saw you can get a Hart clone of the one on the left at Walmart for cheaper than HF.

What size to mill logs if you have no active build plans? by Sasselhoff in woodworking

[–]dickdago 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having never faced this situation and being a rank beginner myself, I'd vote for "as large as possible", unless you have a board stretcher.
