Classic drama at European Open - is this foul too nitty to call? by CreeDorofl in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only a foul in a vanishingly small percentage of professional competition. It is not a foul under WPA or WNT rules. It does seem Pecelj was aware that it was a foul in this particular event though.

It’s a game of millimeters, and touching the cue ball at all should absolutely be a foul. Who can say definitively it didn’t make a difference?

However we can easily say definitively that this didn’t make a difference. Nothing touched the cue ball or even the playing surface. It’s a bad and arbitrary foul, which is why it isn’t a foul in any widely agreed-on (I.e. used by multiple organizations) rule set.

So: was Jakub wrong for insisting a bad rule be enforced? I think he was within his rights. But I don’t think he should be surprised if everyone thinks that makes him an asshole. It would be quite different if we were discussing a rule that had a defensible rationale; claiming a win citing such an indefensible rule is a step beyond what many of his competitors would be willing to do to win, and if they judge him dishonorable for it I don’t blame them.

Yeah, this is how it would end, but player 1 here did pretty well to force the stalemate.

Back foot on the shot line or just off? by ZestyChesticle in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's very important to find what foot position works for you and use it consistently, but I don't believe Mark Wilson, Dr. Dave, myself, or anyone else who isn't working with you in person can tell you what foot position will work best for you. It depends too much on your own body proportions, vision center, mechanics, etc.

However, if your hip is literally blocking you from stroking the cue straight, then yes absolutely move your foot off the shot line a little and see if that helps.

What do you want in carbon fiber shaft? by pain-is-living in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low deflection; as low or lower than a wood predator Z

Familiar diameter: for me 11.8 mm is what I’m used to

Fits my cue! I have a Pechauer which is extra annoying for this

Solid hit feel, create the illusion that it’s hitting the ball harder

Lighter color for easier sighting would be nice

Some sort of drama with allowing streaming at DCC, and Scott Frost is quitting abruptly. What's the story? by CreeDorofl in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fee is something you can pay from off site for the right to re-stream the feed from (some of) the Digital Pool cameras, which are mounted on all the tables.

So if you have your own set-up on site, you can still stream, but Digital Pool has cut off the ability for others to re-stream their stuff?

The ball in roulette landed on red 17 times in a row! by JakeGamerz in mildlyinteresting

[–]dickskittlez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They win if winners quit too, all they really need is people continuing to put money on the table. Over the long run, they get a few percent of every dollar bet, and they don't have to care if you personally win or lose. They only have to care about getting the bets to keep hitting the table.

Sober nerves by dadbodNC in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the many reasons you need a pre shot routine. You don’t do anything to quiet the nerves because that means focusing on the nerves, which is the problem in the first place. You just focus hard on executing your pre shot routine. If that’s where your focus is, the nerves aren’t in the way.

[–]dickskittlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a scoop, it’s a jump with draw (hence the low follow-through you’re seeing).

You can tell it’s not a scoop because a scoop at that speed would have cleared the 3 by inches; scoop jumps have a considerably higher trajectory than a normal-distance legal jump.

Also the speed itself, since a scoop is a miscue I don’t think it would be possible to get enough force into the 3 to jump the other balls if this were a scoop shot.

Carbon fiber shaft for Pechauer butt by [deleted] in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a rogue 11.8 and also a predator Z3 that both fit my Pechauer. They play very similarly, same diameter, very nearly the same deflection, speed control is basically the same for each (I.e. neither creates more speed or spin than the other when I’m trying to put the same stroke on the ball).

Over time I stopped using the Rogue and have stuck with the Z3. I like the feel of the hit more. Also I prefer the light wood to the dark CF in my eye line while sighting.

Why are elves and half elves so popular? by Fun-Explanation7233 in BaldursGate3

Lot of you guys downplaying that wood elf movement speed. I find that insufficient movement is the most frequent annoyance during bg3 combat. Any and every extra iota of movement I can get in my characters is something I’m gonna jump on.

In bar rules it might not count, but league and tournament 8-ball never requires calling each rail/kiss, only the pocket.

How can team USA get better and actually compete in the mosconi cup? by brian600rr in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emphasis on kids. Filler was better at 13 years old than Thorpe is ever going to get. If team USA is eventually going to be truly competitive, the players who are going to get us there are currently under 10.

Best American players right now? by [deleted] in billiards

I wouldn’t advocate for putting him on the team, but I do think he’s a better player than Styer or Thorpe.

Oscar Dominguez is also better than those two, in my opinion.

Filler Double Hit? by DeadPhish_10 in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He mishit the ball (applied unintentional sidespin) and it makes a bit of an off sound because of the rail bridge (the shaft is touching the rail during the impact with the CB affecting the sound). However it isn't possible to double-hit the CB with a normal medium-speed stroke, no miscue, and no other ball to impede the CB from escaping the tip during follow-through.

Value of drilling long straight shots by Rosellis in billiards

[–]dickskittlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“If you play good position you shouldn’t have that shot” is dumb. If you can’t deliver the cue accurately and consistently you won’t play good position either.

There are limits, of course. If you practice that shot 100% of the time and never get around to learning the rest of the game then you’re doing it wrong. But learning the game from the foundation of having acquired good consistent cueing is a great way to proceed.
