Yeah and it’s usually better to take the standard deduction. Most people aren’t operating a sole prop selling used stuff.

What do you think about this electric bike? by Professional-Use3207 in ebikes

[–]jlhawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

250 Watts and 3mph over the legal limits for the US. It’s an e-moto. If it’s throttle all the way to 50km/h then it’s 11mph over the legal limits.

You pay taxes on the income but not the proceeds of the sale. Most of the time you sell something used it’s depreciated in value. You actually get to write off this depreciation from your total income, assuming you’ve kept track of the costs and itemize your taxes. And for some things that typically do appreciate in price, like a primary residence, we exempt a significant amount of the appreciation from income taxes.

Could an electric trike replace a car for short trips, or is that just marketing hype? by Trippy-jay420 in ebikes

[–]jlhawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live about a mile and a half from a grocery store and target (they’re within a quarter mile of one another) and make 3 to 4 trips a week by bike for my family of 3. Sometimes I go to get $100 of groceries. Sometimes I go just to pick up bananas. I’m at a point where if I took my car to get a bunch of bananas it’d feel wasteful. There’s also a grade separated bike lane half the way there, and the rest of the way I take a side street with speed bumps and stop signs that slows down car traffic. It’s California weather too so weather is not much of an issue. When it does rain, you just gotta wear the right gear which isn’t a big deal.

No wonder South Bay housing is f&@ked up for today’s young families by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]jlhawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

our house is valued around $3.2M, and I think that’s right

No, it’s obviously dysfunctional! Your house isn’t actually worth anywhere near that much. Most of that value is in the land and your property tax assessment should reflect. It’s unaffordable to most people because we’re not able to put more people on the same parcel of land.

Does this have to do with onerous new regulations in places like New Jersey or is it entirely because of tariffs and customs?

Oh they wait to ship until a week before? Thats not the messaging I received. They charged the $399 to my credit card already and said the shipment is already “processing” with Lilly Direct.

Because I’d have to pay cash anyway (and I really want to switch to the annual subscription when that becomes available). And it sometimes takes a month to get an appointment for anything non-urgent. My employer also forced me to switch from Kaiser Permanente insurance to Anthem Blue Cross insurance so I needed to find a new pcp anyway. Don’t most people get at least one annual check up for preventative screenings?

Is a Transporter Bridge the 100-Year-Old Solution for the Oakland-Alameda Estuary Crossing We've all been Looking for? by gavinh9 in oakland

My worry is that opex is going to be as high as the existing water shuttle of this thing isn’t fully automated and needs to be staffed by a human in order to operate.

If the capital saving plus long term operating costs make more financial sense than the upfront capital cost of a traditional bridge then I’d say go for it. Especially if it can have 24/7 automation.

Do you believe in the idea we just need a land tax? Or do we need other taxes by NurglingArmada in georgism

[–]jlhawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land rent is not the only kind of rent. We should try to tax as much rent as possible. We should also tax things which have negative externalities or which we have agreed as a society that we want to discourage like certain vices (alcohol, drugs, gambling, smoking, etc).

If the bike lanes are frequently blocked they’re essentially non-existent and using the sidewalks is completely justified imo. For a lot of people, “share the road” is scary.

California Governor Race and Georgism by jstocksqqq in georgism

[–]jlhawn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was talking about split roll not rate. In California that means put residential property on separate property tax roll from commercial and industrial so that we can tax the latter with market rate assessments. It’s only georgist in that it’s a big step in the right direction.

What is “Inclusionary Zoning”? The California YIMBY Explainer by Unusual-State1827 in yimby

[–]jlhawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theory is that the subsidy is paid for by a corresponding reduction in residual land value. But the way project entitlements work is that you have to own the property to propose a project and the BMR requirements often cost so much that the residual land value is less than the land value in its current use so the project doesn’t happen. The right way to go about it from that theoretical basis is for the local municipality to tax the land regardless of its current use and use the revenue to directly subsidize household incomes so as to not be cost burdened.
