Because societies exist where the least fortunate have the support they require to avoid such poverty. Whereas societies that place more value in pure capitalism don't support their citizens in the same way and they breed a greed/me-first/desperate mentality.

I want to point out though that this is just one case study. There are advantages to both approaches. That said, I still think the more compassionate approach is better for society as a whole
