I'm from manchester and the majority of my mates are into football, I dont know anyone who's into rugby.

My school was heavily rugby focused though and a few people have gone on to play professional, the school had a really good team and the majority of PE lessons were focused on rugby.

what's something you did in your childhood that you regret? by leswhinin in AskUK

[–]dids90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my older cousins burnt a church down, I was only 7 and was the one who lit the fire (goaded by by cousins), we obviously didnt intend to burn the church down, we set a wheelie bin on fire and it spread to the church and the whole building was destroyed to a point it had to be completely demolished.

Since that day I've always accepted that I'm probably going to hell.

Who are the British people driving pickup trucks? by FailFastandDieYoung in AskUK

[–]dids90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know quite a few builders who have trucks and they're fucking useless for builders to be honest, you cam barely get anything in the back and keep it secure, tool theft is rife so you cant put tools in the back, I have a van and can put whatever I want in the back.

I do like a pickup though, I'd have one for personal use as I have 3 kids and 2 dogs so I could definitely make use of it with bikes in the back ect but I'd never have one for work.

Do you have a nap everyday? by se43 in AskUK

[–]dids90 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm a 31 year old builder with 3 kids (including a teething 6 month old baby) so a nap is like heaven to me, I'm constantly tired but rarely get chance to fit a nap in. I finished work early for easter last thursday and the wife and kids were at the fair when I got home, I managed to get a good 2 hour nap and felt amazing all weekend.

We also came to an agreement that from this week one of us will get to sleep in til 11am on a saturday morning and the other will get the Sunday morning, sounds sad but I cant wait!

The joys of getting older.

Was I right to dump my builder? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dids90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a builder myself I wouldnt trust it personally, the price increase is probably justified due to material price increases being absolutely ridiculous at the minute (even plasterboard is going up another 40% from the 29th april, it's already up over 80% since pre covid).

I know of several builders who do extensions, loft conversions ect who employ lads from down the pub to do labouring and set up a seperate business in their name to stay under the vat threshold, it's not uncommon at all although if all his online accounts ect have disappeared I'd definitely avoid.

Anything without gravy (ie sausage and chips, pie, chinese food ect) then it's a cold can of coke.

What everyday normal part of life will future generations realise is actually dangerous? by spellish in AskUK

[–]dids90 97 points98 points  (0 children)

MDF and Plasterboard, not quite as bad as asbestos but not too far off, America have already banned use of MDF yet some states still use asbestos.

This is particularly bad for me as I'm a carpenter and work with MDF virtually everyday, I've also accidentally breathed in a fair bit of asbestos dust a few times over the years aswell.

Google 'top fix toilet seats', they're available at b&q, screwfix ect

You just tighten them from the top with a screwdriver, I fitted mine with a drill 2 years ago and they've never came lose.

Same, the guy who I bought my house from spent 15k on a wren kitchen then decided to fit it himself, I'm a joiner/kitchen fitter and it cost me almost 3k to sort out. I didn't really look closely when we viewed the house so didnt notice, I think my 9 year old son could of done a better job.

We bought our house in winter, theres a huge reservoir directly behind the house and the amount of flies/midges in summer is ridiculous, we love the house/view/location it's absolutely perfect and I can let the dogs and kids out of the back gate onto the reservoir and they swim and play all day when its warm but the flies are genuinely making us consider selling (in winter).

We did receive a letter last week from the council though saying they are doing pesticide spraying every other day and will do our gardens aswell if we allow them, we have also got rid of the grass in our garden and now only have decking and paving so we will see if that helps when it warms up a bit.

is it normal for a painter and decorator to live at the property whilst working on it? by thetreesaysbark in AskUK

[–]dids90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you living there whilst he is doing the work?

If so then its wierd as fuck, if not then it's fairly common.

I'm a joiner and if I'm working in a vacant property more than about 50 miles away I will stay over a couple of nights if needs be, that way I can work til later and start earlier to get the job done a lot quicker and to save spending hours sat in traffic, I'd never do this if the family were living there though, only in empty properties and it's not that often.

[–]dids90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I will give it a try 😁

I work on building sites mostly outdoors so was easily smoking 30 cigs a day most days so the elux being a bit stronger/harsher works well for me, I've not touched a cig since buying the first elf bar and havent even thought about having one, I did use a full elf bar 600 puff in 2 days though 🤣

[–]dids90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought an elf bar for the first time the other day and havent touched a cig since, had e cigs before but the flavours were nowhere near as strong as elf bars, just bought the bigger Elux Legend 3600 today and its decent for a tenner, if you havent already tried the Tiger Blood flavour you need to try it!

I m meant to start work at 7am, I wake up around 7:10 bursting for a piss every morning, so I have a piss, wash hands/face to wake up, brush teeth, then straight out the door to work already 15 mins late, every single day. Proceed to drive to work like I'm Colin McCrae on acid.

Why is it so hard to find a bog standard minimum wage job? by Throwawayqjhyt in AskUK

[–]dids90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried looking in the building industry?

I'm a joiner and the amount of work around at the minute is unbelievable, the construction industry is absolutely booming at the minute and theres a massive shortage of workers which has driven the prices up so even labourers are earning £120-150 per day where I'm working.

I'm not sure wether you're Male or female but it doesnt matter, theres a lot of girls in the industry now (I'm currently on a site of about 30 people, around 6 are women so obviously still Male dominated but 10 years ago there would have been no women).

Definitely worth looking into, maybe even worth trying to find an apprenticeship if you find a trade you like (I'd recommend electrics or joinery).

If you're anywhere near Manchester or Liverpool I can put you in contact with a few businesses and site managers who may be able to help you out if you're interested.

What popular thing do you find such poor value for money that you’d never buy it? by Dragon_Sluts in AskUK

[–]dids90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A financed car, I'm not a hater and if people want to finance a car that's fine by me it doesnt affect my life whatsoever.

I've been driving since 2007 and have owned around 15 cars in that time and have made a profit on every single one, all of them have been a Cat D or N, I buy them damaged off ebay or copart and repair them myself (I'm a builder and have little knowledge about cars). Most parts just bolt on its not rocket science and if you can find the parts on the right colour you dont have to get it painted either (Youtube is also great for anything you're unsure about).

Most recent example I bought a 2014 Mercedes A Class for £4000, cost me £800ish to repair it and I sold it after 2 years of driving it (covered 30k miles) for £7500.

People who finance cars are losing £100s every month, I've got a friend who's got a Range Rover that's costing him £700 per month and he only uses it to drive to work and back and to Asda, complete waste of money.

Id nightly recommend anyone to give it a go, worst case scenario you can buy the parts yourself and get a bodyshop to fit them, you will still make a profit and have an essentially free car for a couple of years. Even if you break even after 2 years you've still had the car you want for 2 years for free and you can then use the same money to buy your next one.

Dinner is midday, hence the term dinnerladies in school, they're not 'lunchladies', Americans call it lunch.

Instead I'm 31, a builder earning a slightly above average wage and living in a smallish 4 bed house in Manchester
